It's funny that immediately after the Heisman presentation, ESPN airs the documentary on how SMU got in trouble for paying its players back in the 80's. I'm sure the timing of that wasn't an accident.
 


Definitely wrong choice of words there...great player to watch, who knows what really happened but the whole situation is a shame as tonight's 30 for 30 is reiterating.
 

What a crock. It's now open season on paying players as long as "it's only Dad" asking for the money. He is the best player of the year but he should be ineligible. I don't think it is over yet. MSU didn't pay the money but that doesn't mean Auburn didn't. My guess is this will be another vacated Heisman within the next five years.

Right before this story broke there was an article profiling Newton in SI/Sporting News (get both, don't remember which) in which Cam Newton is quoted as saying that after junior college "I wanted to go to Mississippi State but my Dad wanted me to go to Auburn". Author of article then stated something to the effect of '...and Dad won out'.
 


From all the stuff that's out there, Auburn might get as close to the death penalty as you can get.
 

As I have said, I grew up loving Auburn. Bo Jackson and Charles Barkley defined college sports for me when I was a pup. I can't get behind Auburn now. It feels so dirty. Enjoy the Heisman now, Cam. You will be giving it back.

I can see that happening all the time. Chances are Cam Newton knew all about this. Doesn't matter though. As long as there is no proof, then he doesn't get in trouble. That's ridiculous. This will open it up and will happen all the time. I can see it now: "Daddy did it, not me. I just want to play football."

I feel the NCAA is waiting for the BCS title game until they clear up the mess surrounding this particular situation and the issue at large. With their ruling, they were basically saying, "We're not going to punish you now, but we will later and take away all of your accomplishments so enjoy them while you can." It was a ridiculous decision to make by them. Considering how the NCAA has been trying to lay down the law this year, it was mind-boggling. But now that he's played the whole year, I think it would be a shame if he didn't play in the final game after they've qualified for it.
 



To continue on. He should've been bounced when we found out his dad was soliciting money for his commitment. Pretty sure you can't do that.

Agree. I think that if Auburn was 8-4 right now, he would have been suspended. It could end up being a situation where only the innocent get in trouble for it, similar to what happened at USC. Carroll got out just in time. Bush had to give up his Heisman, but that's about it.
 

NCAA is in bed with SEC. I think the NCAA is scared that the SEC could unravel the whole corporate football system, err BCS system, if they wanted to. I'd be surprised if anything happens to Auburn any time soon. This process is a joke.

Cam Newton was the best player this year, but this ridiculous "integrity-based" system of post-season accolades has fueled every "father" thinking about doing some dirty sh*t.
