Gopher Hockey Recruiting

Even if there’s no one particularly shocking that we pickup and it’s all players we kind of expected, we should be a way better team next year.

Goal:
Smith (L) - Murr (R)
Whipple (L) - Henricks (R)
Rombach (L) - Huff (R)/Lofgren (L)
Huff (R)/Lofgren (L)
Scratch - McLaughlin (L)

That would be vastly improved from last season.

I am glad to see you are coming around to that bringing in a stop gap player like Murr would indeed be a move that would greatly elevate the D core. Would say the above d core is tournament caliber. Obviously nowhere near our peak groupings, but that’s a capable group.

Seeing McLaughlin supposedly not portal would make me envision Harper must be leaving towards staying pending how we do swinging for some of the other big CHLers

If some rumblings and rumors are true about what the roster will entail next year, I truly think we can roll out a contender next year.

Are you just referring to the 3 st cloud guys, Huff, Murr, and possibly a CHL defender or two? Or do you know something else that isn't already circulating?

It’s possible for a surprise pickup. We seem to be way more in the mix for good names.

We also seem to be involved in plenty of CHL kids for not just next years team but beyond.

Would be huge, but I feel like he’ll want to play consistent minutes in college next year, and we’re really jammed up currently. But who knows

is this what you're meaning? you 1000% take Laylin over him based on trajectory and production to this point. We've got a lot of big bodies who can't score.

Well I guess, jammed up assuming that we get Tarin Smith
does he? I guess he'll be 19 this winter but it's just his draft year and he's a mid-late round pick. feel like he'd come in a lot more polished next year playing top minutes and pp/pk, rather than mid pair and pp2 somewhere. would seem rather odd to decommit from UST if he was set on playing next year

That’s true, I might be sounding a bit pessimistic. I think another year of juniors before going to a top college team would do him good, but was just thinking if he was nominated for USHL defensemen of the year already he might be thinking it’s time for himself to move on.

Also, I thought he would’ve announced a commitment quicker if he was coming here but we shall see.

i took it more as the staff has said we're seeing (I mean his dad is on staff lol) and then we may have a slot for you. Would imagine they may, as a family, want to give it a little time and space away from dad just being announced to commit here. I guess he could've decommitted from UST as the staff there wanted to be petty?

either way, we shall see what they decide but it would really surprise me if he's playing somewhere else in college next year other than here

If his brother is a DSA why can't he be. Or we need to know if Begley can be a DSA. This whole roster limit thing is a mess

Team USA pre-tournament U18 line charts today with no Gophers on it (acknowledging Cullen did not dress).

Harper with no logo (confirming the decommit)
Fitzhenry and Brayden Willis (AZ kid) the only uncommitted ones (in addition to Harper)

We've had pretty good success with our AZ kids if he wants to follow in some footsteps

Feel like I’ve hardly heard anything about Willis and he’s putting up great numbers. Hopefully he looked up to Matty Knies even though they’re completely different types of players lol.

Just based off a hunch I’d guess it would be between us and North Dakota.

Final Central Scouting rankings are out

Cullen 13 among NA skaters
Casey 26 among NA goalies

No one else because Motzko took a year off from recruiting. Overall one of the weakest drafts in recent Gopher recruiting history because of skipping all the late 07/08s. Time to show us what you've got, Coach.

Mckenna #1
Chase Reid MSU #2
Carson Carels #3
Verhoef UND #4
Rudolph #5
Malhotra BU #6
Lawrence BU #7
And so on

With the CHL now available what was previously amazing recruiting to get a first rounder is now about getting top 15 picks.

Laylin 131

other takeaway, pretty ugly looking MN class (in terms of quantity of high end guys, including people Gopher fans were initially really high on like Berchild, Trottier, etc). Hopefully Larson can find his way in with some of the remaining uncommitted guys

still need some dudes to go with the other guys.

Just waiting on the Laylin flip

Very interesting analysis done here. Basically showing players who played in USHL/OHL performed much closer to their junior production in their freshmen season than the WHL and QMJHL. Curious to see what this looks like over multiple years to see if it becomes a trend. Could be a useful recruiting tool with multiple years of data.

kind of interesting. Think it speaks to the leagues a little bit with the O being lower scoring by a bit comparatively, so you're going to have a little higher intrinsic point "retention" because your number is lower. also the aspect of where you're getting your "grinders" from who in theory should retain scoring better because of that lower overall number.

will be curious to see how it goes forward with more high end talent coming down. thanks for sharing

It's early to read much into the data. The floodgates are fully open now and you saw the Frozen Four teams all with a bunch of CHL guys. The need for them is obvious.

Currently the 26-27 Gopher team really doesn't have many... Kvasnicka/Humphreys (both Americans) and maybe Smith...

This wasn’t a knock against all the CHL players, just a look into player performance between leagues. Like I said multiple years of data is still needed but it will be interesting to see. Also shows USHL was still either right on par or above the other leagues last year.

Regardless it’s all about player quality no matter where they play. CHL just happened to expand the amount of those quality players that are available. I’m not gonna lose my mind for not having CHL kids if we put together a good roster still. Wisconsin barely had any.

Interesting tidbit is he didn't separate the F and D, which I think is problematic, particularly given roles changing (top scoring F in the Dub probably keeps a PP slot, but the defenseman may not). Either way, fun to look at. Still think the 4 FF teams showed that the college game itself still is not changing too much in that come March/April, defense is what wins titles
