Gopher-centric Portal Short List

Do not contact but a list of schools he has met with/will meet with.

This transfer portal stuff is wierd
Someone on the WBB board pointed out that it may be an indication to send inquiries through their agent and not to the athlete directly. So things may be changing from "I know where I want to go" to "talk to my representation."

With a "do not contact tag" - we made the list- which is interesting....
Do not contact is used far more for guys who know they're valued and want to select their school, not vice versa, so their agents are reaching out. Not saying it doesn't happen where guys know beforehand and thats why they do the do not contact, but this is more common.

To me, what is interesting about it is that it is a sign that players are identifying our coach as someone who can help their career along. I like it!

Really need a wing who’s 6’5” or taller for certain matchups. Even if it’s a serviceable player off the bench.

Also it's so they can reach out to the schools they are considering and not have anyone contact them. Many players have been contacted by back door contacts, like friends, players and others that are not coaches. Many have a short list of teams they know are interested or have mutual interest.

Gotta think for any desirable player that goes in the portal the amount of contact they get is ridiculous. You have tons of teams all competing for the same handful of impact guys and everything in portal recruiting is shrunk down to a really tight window. The whole process has to be nuts for everyone involved.

Broke into the starting lineup in late December. 24 points on 9/14 (5-7 3PT) in their NCAA matchup against Akron. 77% FT shooter. He made 69 threes on the year at a 37.5% clip so the dude is a gunner (for reference Tyson made 71 and Durkin made 80).

Christian Anderson for them averaged 7.4 assists per game, while Petty averaged 2.2 (they had another two guys average 2.1 and 2.4) so looks like he was used as more of a combo guard?

This guy would be a big get IMO but it looks like stiff competition.
I'd be ok with taking TT's guys that make some $$ there and want to just come play basketball without the school trying to find the next guy they can pay millions to.

And many of these players are know through previous recruitment and the AAU circuits. Coaches know what they are looking for and who will fit their systems.

I’d take Heide in a heartbeat. Athleticism (jumps out of the gym), experience on really good teams, has never been a selfish player, good 3-point shooter. … a lot to like.
I haven't followed him at all, I'm kinda wondering why he hasn't been able to garner more minutes and scoring opportunities in his career? He has shot 45%, 39%, then 45% from 3PT. Career 77% FT shooter. Decent size at 6'7" 205. Yet he has only played more than 30 minutes 10 times in his career (110 games total), and only taken 10 or more shots twice. Maybe he has just had too many other talented players on those Purdue/Texas teams? Does he have difficulty creating his own shot, I see that 2/3 of his attempts are 3's.

Heide lacks grit… he can shoot the three and has some hops.. athletic.. he likes to float I think that’s why he left Purdue.. I could see Painter getting frustrated with him..

Shooting and athleticism he is Power 4… the rest of his game mid major…2/3 of his shots are from three

yeah i think it was simply because he has been on some loaded teams. Started 29 games for Texas this past year. Played the 5th most minutes. Texas' other 4 starters took a ton of shots as well.

and saying all that......he would still be a homerun get for the gophers

Agree

Played 110 games and started 29 for Texas this year. Career 51% and 43% from 3. Also agree that none of his stats outside of shooting still out. I'd take his experience if he wants a hometown discount to wrap his career.

The contact lists are nothing to pay attention to. Most are agent driven to show their client their is interest, and are schools they have reached out to, not the other way around.

Need a center...

This is a real bummer, an older front court with JCJ returning and Durkin as a lights out shooter on the wing would have set us up nicely to prioritize a guard (not convinced it will be a traditional point) and solid depth.

This is a lesson moving forward not to fall in love with any center prospects that come through the program. The setup as it stands is perfect for big guys that won't make it to the league to make crazy money. Have had an underlying thought about this with Mpoyi long term, if things go as planned, he should be our highest paid player as an upperclassman. Incredibly valuable player profile in potential.

Give me Petty, Heide, & Kapke this weekend to get this transfer class going

There's a bit of a "Moneyball" aspect to it too. Michigan and Arizona (and Illinois) won with size, so now everyone wants it and guys like Vioholla become more valuable.

It may be best for Niko to stick to his system which doesn't seem to value big men that much and not overpay for size.

good point.....as while i view this as a loss.....will be very interesting where he ends up....lateral move or a move down

Isn't he undersized, though? I can't imagine a 6'8" center coming off a serious knee injury will be a hot commodity for P5.

Hes 6'8, has no shooting or creating skills and can't hit a FT. This is the C Michigan would love for their opponents to run out against them.

The loss of Vaihola may make it easier to attract a 5 who can shoot it to go with Mpoyi and Grove.
With the group of Vaihola, Grove and Mpoyi, none would be an outside threat- which might be a big deal in Niko's offense. As Mpoyi progresses we will have a chance to offer different looks depending upon who we are playing and game situation- if we can get a 5 that can shoot it.

Hahaha.
So...it was a recruiting failure for Niko last year? I mean he's undersized and can't shoot.
