***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA VS BAYLOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL CROWN ELITE 8 IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

not with a bang but a whimper.......at least I put CSE in my will for $500K.....probably be watching the next season from that skybox on high......this is Washgopher checking OUT

People who don't realize how important Reynolds is to this team is beyond me. Yes he forces things and sometimes looks bad. But next year if we don't replace him, good luck having someone late in games able to drive it for a decent shot or to get to the free throw line. Many games he was the only gopher as athletic as the top 5 of the opposing team! Willis is 6-2 and also cannot shoot outside. He isnt a replacement for a 6-4 powerful guard.
I don't disagree, Reynolds was extremely valuable to this team, but I do think Asuma has a chance to be that kind of guy.

He improved a lot from last year to this year and should continue to improve over the off season heading into his 3rd year. He has a chance to be really good and could develop into a key leader on this squad next year.

If there's a silver lining to playing this game (and getting smacked), it's a final reminder to the staff what elite athleticism looks like.

I love the nucleus we have coming back, and I look forward to seeing what gets added once the portal opens up.
Niko knows what he had with this squad and what he needs. My take is he will add more size and guys good off the dribble. Next year’s squad will look different

I'm still dumbfounded about how we were left out of the tourney. It didn't help that Wisconsin-Green Bay lost in their conference tournament but still got an at-large invite, thereby stealing a bid.

I vividly remember the overreaction to that NIT loss. My favorites were people saying the Gophs weren't athletic enough to match up with teams like Tulane. Even though they lost Mark Jones to transfer in the off season, they still did plenty decently the following year.
Losing in the opening round to St. Louis is the ‘95 tourney didn’t help. Season is significantly different if Bobby Jackson is healthy from the start. He didn’t debut until the Cal game and he struggled some until the second half of the Big Ten schedule. ( It’s a fair statement to say with Bobby playing to capacity for 1.5 Big Ten seasons Minnesota was 23-4.) Back to the Cal game: Although it drew 25,000 (IIRC) moving the game to the Metrodome deprived us of the Williams Arena home court advantage. Also—if memory serves—Clem weirdly gave true freshman Miles Tarver many ineffectual minutes in the game. Cal wins and makes the field. We’re bubbled away. I believe we were the first Big Ten team with a winning conference record not to make the 64 team field. The ‘96 team had a shot at reaching the second weekend—quite “dumbfounding”.

Yep....what this year showed is Niko has a good eye for guys that fit his system and he was also able to navigate a really tough roster situation and still field a very competitive team.

At a bare minimum we should have better luck on the injury front next year and it also seems very likely that Niko will be able to add some pieces that fit his system to replace the guys who won't be back next year.

Agreed. The team was able to compensate, at least partially, for athletic disadvantages in multiple games this season but they need to go a little bigger on talent with at least two portal transfers.

In reality a team that wants to finish in the top 6-7 teams most years and be in the tournament, needs to have at least 2 or more guys who can do this? So, yes I agree Asuma can do some of this. But he is smaller and less athletic than Reynolds. Niko didn't have more than one of these types of players at CSU. But the mtn west is less athletic than the big ten (exception San D. st.). I hope we get guys with Reynolds athleticism to add to what Asuma may bring in the coming years.

Of the big ten's top 9 finishers, all but Nebraska and Iowa had multiple guys that fit that mold. And these two teams had to operate on such a high IQ and skill level to make up for it. I'd rather just recruit athletes and mix them with more skilled but unathletic types.

Niko is going to bring in a few impact players from the portal. He's not standing pat with this roster and the freshman recruits.
Hello,Captain Obvious. The point is those few guys can't miss being healthy and really good just for us to tread water. AND then stats say we won way above our talent level this past year.

It's important to not overreact to one game. The 1995-96 season ended with a thumping at home at the hands of Tulane in the NIT. I remember a lot of overreaction to that game, like yours here.

I'll repeat it again: the Gophers will be allowed by the NCAA to replace Tyson and Reynolds with new additions to the roster. Once that process plays out, we will see what things look like.
We finished 11th...the idea is to get better. My point is...it is going to be difficult to do. We had an exceptional season with underdogs in most every game...always struggling uphill is hard and this years results with even similar talent likely won't result in a finish as high as 11 next year.
Tyson and Reynolds...our two best players were available for the majority of the games as well.
Getting better won't be easy.
The coaches are good in the Big Ten...Niko won't sneak up on anybody next year. Then again, maybe we become the next Wisconsin and finish top 4 every year with how in the hell do they do that?

Players who were supposed to be in the 8 man rotation at the beginning of the season missed a combined 87 regular season games. That is an absurd #. With any injury luck at all that # should go down by 50%-75%.

Also, Reynolds is NOT our 2nd best player. There's a reason he wasn't a starter at the beginning of the season. Good defender but on offense, can't make 3's, can't make FT's and commits a lot of turnovers. And if he was our 2nd best player for stretches, it's only because so many others were out.

You were the one acting like it won't happen. No one predicted Tyson would have the year he had this year. Niko now has a long track record of bringing in under the radar guys and making them stars. I will bet that happens again with someone that's not even on the roster yet.

Injuries are injuries. Every team has them, no one can predict them. The odds are really good the Gophers don't have anywhere near the injury problems they did this year. This was an extreme anomaly.

Ran out of gas. Still managed 4-5 without Crocker-Johnson.

Seven game losing streak in the middle of the season was the difference in gaining some major momentum

Seven game stretch with losses to

USC by 1 in OT
Wisconsin by 3 at the buzzer
Illinois by 10 to final 4 team on road
tOSU by 8 in OT on the road
Nebraska by 19 to Sweet 16 team.
Wisconsin by 4 late
Penn State by 2.

8-10 in conference and 10-10 Iowa was the cut off for tournament.

Big portal season needed to fill hole left by Tyson
All this is amazing! Amazing! I just don't think it is duplicatable with just replacing Tyson and Reynolds ... who were excellent. I know we are adding three freshmen...I know we expect everybody to return and to be better than they were but the stats scream our competitive results are not sustainable without dramatically better players than we had...not just replacing what we had.
We need a Stirtz, a Wagler, Braden Smith, Donovan Dent, Blackwell, or even Fears kind of guy to get higher. Then those teams have another guy or a big like Lindeborg.
Year two needs more than mirrors to finish above 11th.
Niko will be competitive...not disputing that...but higher than 11th is gonna be hard!

We just disagree on the value of Reynolds...did he turn the ball over more than you'd like? Yes, but he always had the ball in his hands by design and was the only guy capable of running the show. He can't shoot but he shot 14 percentage points higher than Asuma from the field. He drew a lot of fouls on the opposing team which puts front line guys on the bench allowing other teammates to benefit.
Statistically, JCJ is our 2nd best player but we still competed without him. We ain't beating anybody without Reynolds running the show. You think Reynolds turned it over too much? ...the guy behind him would make you wish for Reynolds back.

11th in the best league in the land translates to one of the top 75 teams in the country. That equals Johnson's best season, meaning as good as the Gophers have been in five years. I'm extremely pleased with this foothold on the way back up the mountain. Focusing on the losses of Reynolds and Tyson sounds a lot like, "Niko will never recover from David Roddy's graduation," which people did say at the time and, of course, turned out to be nonsense.

You usually have to walk before you can run. This has reminded me a little of Dick Bennett's first year in Madison, when they finished 8th in an 11-team league but often impressed playing as underdogs in most games. No guarantees that Niko will be able to elevate this team next year, but there are never any guarantees in sports. Whatever happens, I'm here for it.

Bullshit. You'll be complaining like the rest of us for another season. Need your heart. You're not leaving us that easy.

I agree with you. Ay minimum we need another Cade Tyson in whatever we get.

This loss brought our Kenpom from 76 to 81, now behind USC.

Also Baylor went from 51 to 49

Stanford/West Virginia going to OT after Stanford player fouls a three point shooter with three seconds remaining and down three. All three free throws made. Must be nice.

Rutgers fans looking at close to an 11PM local start for their game.

I thought Stanford players were supposed to be smart?

It was obvious early on that Baylor is much more athletic than the Gophs. Some of their passes were like bullets, and they could shake and bake better than Betty Crocker.

We played both Michigan and Illinois this year—two Final Four teams with elite athleticism. Niko and players didn’t need to play a team in the Crown to have gotten their first experience of what elite athleticism looks like. There are plenty of examples in our own conference.

You are looking at 11th and saying it will be tough to get better. I look at 11th and say we finished way higher than we had any right to considering the way the roster was decimated by injuries so that actually gives me hope for better results in the future.

Obviously they are going to have to bring in guys from the portal to replace what we are losing in Tyson/Reynolds. But it isn't like that is some impossible task. Niko has a system to sell, one that took Tyson coming off a terrible year at UNC and turned him into a top player in the Big Ten.

There is a solid core that has already announced they are returning (with the potential for more) so there is something to build around.

I feel like there is a very good chance that Niko is able to land some quality portal additions and by adding them to what is already in place this team has a great chance to be in the NCAA tournament next year. Beyond that it is tough to say until we actually see what all the rosters in the conference are going to look like.

Thank you. Not only is this not an impossible task, it's the very nature and reality of college sports.

I remember back in the 90s foolishly thinking that, as soon as Kiwane Garris and Richard Keene graduate, Illinois will never be good again and the Gophers will dominate them forever, bwahahaha. And, of course, that didn't happen.

Yeah, used to be you could look at your squad and fairly accurately project out the next few years but those days are long gone (especially in basketball).

I get that some people are just wired to see the glass half empty but there are legit reasons to be excited about the future of the program based on how the team played in spite of being ridiculously short handed and undersized.

Certainly we'd have been in trouble without him. But that's mainly because Willis got hurt. For next year I'd rather have a healthy Willis and Evans (if we indeed land him) than Reynolds.

Okay, I can pretty much agree with that. Hopefully, both join the roster and stay healthy and perform well.
I'll say this....if we got IJA from St Thomas or similar, Evans and two guys better than Tyson then I'm excited. Tyson was the 7th leading scorer in the Big Ten and Reynolds was 50th out of 90 possible starters...I'm sure some bench guys make up the lower part of the list but you get the idea.
But again, with the above in place we still gotta find one Top 10 scorer in the league just to kinda tread water...two, say Top 25 to feel confident and say hey...we should win 10 games. The league overall never seems to get worse.
Yes, healthy and older and better developed returning guys will help but we need a dramatic infusion of talent to get better.
Totally possible...just not guaranteed but I see your logic.
I should add...we were dead last in scoring per game in the Big Ten...yet we finished 11th. Can we do that again?
