All Things Players Coming and Going (26-27 Off-Season)

Airey's in the portal. The one we already knew about.

yep. and I'd expect they'll sign their ELCs after because this is way more advantageous to their NHL club to not burn a year, but we've now set precedent guys can play AHL games and come back which is just going to take someone challenging it and coming back. No reason that Fink playing 10 games in the AHL on a tryout (given the salary) shouldn't be able to come back if Beck was able to do just that.

The NCAA will need to address this but it is certainly open to having this come up right now. That being said, I don’t suspect fink or cerrato are those guys as they’re both AHL ready for sure and there were prior rumblings that they’d leave

Think probably more a spot a guy like Kurth tries to press. Not good enough for ahl but got that late shot and ended up in the echl. Would assume many guys would rather come back for the money and lifestyle on college hockey now comparatively

As the rule is currently written, as soon as they play a competitive game at the Pro level after enrolling in college, they are no longer eligible to play NCAA D1 hockey. Therefore, they can join a team, practice with them, and participate in intra-squad scrimmages, but cannot play a game against another team.

Mike McMahon explains it really well here:

I know how the rules are written, I’m just saying I can see someone missing a roster coming and trying to challenge it

Seems weird you’d allow LeBron or Connor mcdavid (or Jack Beck for that matter, who played pro games and signed another deal to keep playing before picking ASU) to come play, but not Hagens or Cerrato to come back just because they suited up and tried to play 5 games to make a team and missed out or to say he can come back if he practices and scrimmages but not if he plays 1 game.

several other non-Gopher guys have been announced as going into the portal. Suprises me a little we don't see more intention to do so given there's nothing stopping them. Just couldn't be contacted

McQueen (Providence) signing with the Ducks
A good example of why to be careful spending all your money on some of the CHL guys. This guy goes into Providence, has a very underwhelming year as far as top 10 picks go, and then immediately leaves for pro before he’s probably ready. It’d be different if he tore it up this year and left. Clearly he just wanted to get to the AHL quicker.

Definitely need to be able to scoop those caliber players, but just as important is making sure that their heart is actually in it.

Or just take the guys that you know are one and done and plug them in appropriately. Everyone knew Cooley was one and done. You never turn that guy down. That hasn't changed in this new world, just that they get paid for it.

i mean i get swinging for it if you're providence who had a ton of guys coming back. but yeah 18-19 year olds some are going to hit and some will take time. He wanted to go pro post draft last year so i think they well knew what they were getting

My point is if he’s going to be a one and done it better not be someone who doesn’t really care about the program or developing. There are plenty high picks who don’t have an incredible first season and stay another year instead of leaving to chase the pro money. Don’t just throw out darts, figure out who the right ones are. Cooley was a no brainer who worked his ass off and gave everything he had to give. I’m not saying stay away from one and dones altogether.

Also I think it’s a little different with CHL because some of these Canadian kids who didn’t grow up around college sports just don’t seem to care about it as much and just want to use it to make more money and get to the next level quicker, so just need to be careful of that. Guys like that is not how you win.

I don’t know if I found out my team knew he was gone after one year no matter how he played then I’d be a little pissed they spent money on him. Thats a good indication he’s just using it to get their money and then to the pro money faster. Plenty of other transfer portal or older freshmen recruits who could’ve gave them that same impact season but then actually stayed.

OSU gets another drafted (CHL) European goalie.

Wiebusch makes it 5 out of 5 top PSU scorers leaving (by going to the portal). Gophers need centers, though, so not that interested.

the portal seems like a really bizarre move. From WI, so maybe wants to go back? Does make you wonder a bit if the culture around all the CHLers brought in was perhaps not great.

Laubach IIRC is still set to come back so would be 5/6 (provided McKenna signs as expected post draft)

I sorted by points per game to see the top 5

on this part, given he's leaving PSU either he feels he's not being developed or is looking for dollars. I'd put it as very unlikely he's coming here regardless, but still.

If its the former, I mean yes you add a player like this, particularly as we need class balance, age, and he does play with grit in addition to being a consistent scorer. Adds much more scoring punch than say Hendrickson, and is same age as Pahlsson, Clark, Pritchard, Falloon, Ludtke. Get we need centers of course, but we also only had 2 guys score over 10 goals last year and I don't think you're going to see Pritchard or Townsend jump up like that even if they caught a bigger role

Chin Degraves (PSU) also has announced he's going into the portal

Clark showed some promise early on but never really progressed. Appreciate the time he gave to the program but definitely the type of guy who needs to get processed out for this program to ascend back to the levels we want to see.
