It's still much more likely McCollum is gone from Iowa pretty quickly compared to Medved.

McCollum will turn 44 on April 12th. Still plenty young and plenty of time to build a hall-of-fame resume. I might be getting way ahead of ourselves saying that, but he's the real deal.

Niko is the real deal, too, but he's a bit older (52). That said, Bo Ryan was 53 when he took the UW job.

He was at NW Missouri State for 15 years and had 5 30+ win seasons and an 81.3% winning percentage during that time. I think he could have gotten a D1 job earlier if he had really wanted one. I know he left Drake after one year but going to Iowa had to be a very large boost in salary.

McCollum is a Cignetti, pick any level and he's bringing his team to the high water mark. Niko is going to be very very good for us though.
Seems pretty aggressive; they’re in the elite 8

But fran was over .500 in the big ten 47% of seasons

Currently Medved and McCollum are both over .500 on the big ten 0% of the time

Cignetti didn’t win 3 playoff games after a .500 big ten season. He won a 16-0 national title

There are certain jobs nearly impossible to say no to.
He is good enough to get offered by them.
But the world is different and it’s easier to say no than it used to be so maybe he will stay

Which is wild haha.

Niko is 52 and looks 40.

McCollum is 44 and looks 61.

I'd say Niko is 52 and looks 30.
Ben is 44 and looks 44...if he had hair he'd look younger. He certainly doesn't lack energy.

Niko is better H2H.

All I know is it’s going to be easy to hate Iowa for years to come.

Iowa struck gold as a 9 seed.

They finished 10 - 10 in the big 10.

Let's see them again next year. They could go either way.

You don't to think Iowa will pay to keep him if he continues to have this level of success?

It’s more that he doesn’t have the connection to Iowa like Medved does to MN. He’s from Iowa but was never associated with U of Iowa until now.

Not every coach chases the big money. But just think of the two, he is more likely than Medved.

He's already a God in Iowa.........why leave?

Money would have to be huge.

Sports just keep getting worse. We badly needed the type of season Iowa had and instead they did. They weren't even suffering. Fran was over .500 in conference frequently and had two Big Ten tournament titles.

For them to make the tournament this year, they needed perfect health. Stirtz played literally every minute for them and somehow never missed a game and had to deal with foul trouble like once all season. If Stirtz turns an ankle they don't make the tournament.

In the tournament they got an amazing first round draw in Clemson who was without their leading rebounder/2nd leading scorer. They lose to a lot of teams in round 1. I worry about everything and I didn't even consider the possibility that Iowa would beat Florida. Seeing Florida choke that away and send Iowa to the Sweet 16 was the worst sports moment of the year for me. Nebraska lead for something like 80% of the game and they too found a way to choke it away.

McCollum was awesome in this tournament. He slows the game to a crawl to limit possessions and give his team a chance. He then made better decisions than tight players and coaches on the other side.

My hope before the Florida game was this was a 1 year/everything went right scenario for McCollum at Iowa. Stirtz was so instrumental to the success they had and he would be out of eligibility. The overall style of play (few possessions, only one player with any offensive freedom) would be unappealing to recruits in the future.

Now that they have a fucking Elite Eight, my fear is that this is another TJ at Iowa State situation. TJ snuck in to the NCAA's his first year, got a favorable draw, and made a run to the Sweet 16. He's parlayed that in to 5 straight NCAA's and 3 Sweet 16's while frequently being ranked not just in the top 25, but in the top 10. McCollum will certainly have more NIL next year (and we beat them out for Cade Tyson last offseason) and he's got all the momentum in the world.

At some point, in football or basketball, we have to do the hard thing and win against teams with way more talent/$ in games that actually matter. Obviously we've had horrible luck with injuries and shooting variance late in games while Iowa has had impeccable luck...but the results are the results and it's really tiring.

You can stress all you want about Iowa's success these last 2 weekends, but even with all the Gopher injuries they were only 2 games back in the Conference standings. They were also only 2 spots below for seeding in the Big 10 Tournament (9 > 11).

Plus the Gophers beat them head-to-head.

In the future if Iowa gets an At Large NCAA berth, that still leaves 36 other spots that Minnesota is can aspire to achieve. Likey will be 44 or more such bids in the near future.

I hope McCollum sticks around...and I think he will. That said, they did lose their top-shelf coach (Lute Olson) many years ago to a sexy warm-weather program. Lute was also a midwesterner (North Dakota), but McCollum is actually from Iowa and grew up a big Hawkeye fan, so there's that. I'd bet money he's there the rest of his career.

I think he’s just frustrated that everything seemed to go their direction and not ours. Sometimes that’s all you need to change the course of a program. Still high hopes for us, but man we could use a year where everything works out for us too.

Has anyone mentioned that Iowa provided more support which always equals more success?

We knew McCollum would have a good go of it, especially once he recruited Stirtz to follow him. Fran left the program in good shape and, although it was a remade roster, there wasn't a Kyan Evans refusing to follow their old coach to a dumpster fire. The Minnesota situation was a different ball of wax from that. It's easy to forget how hopeless and bombed to smithereens this thing was. Niko recruited a decent roster and did an almost miraculous job guiding them through adversity. If you asked me who did the more amazing job this year between the two of them, I'd have a hard time picking one over the other.

The Big Ten has, top to bottom, the best coaches in the country, and both these guys have immediately shown they belong in that fraternity.
Come on man, one guy took a team to the Elite Eight, including beating a #1 seed and defending national champ.

I want Niko to be a better human being than Izzy has been over the last five years. He’s turned into an angry old man.
Izzo was always angry and now he's old.

I've posted his name in the same breath with the basketball hall of fame and you're hurt because you think I'm undervaluing him. Really??
