Gopher Women's Basketball Recruiting Updates

What is her game like? Sounds like a good early offer.
I watched Hamiel play live this weekend in the third place game at state. I was wondering if she was going to get any big offers soon.
She looks like she will be a quality P4 player. I don't have her stats but she has good height (at least 5'10") and she has good strength. She has the look of a forward while being able to handle the ball well and she is good at driving. Her shot was good looking, but she didn't attempt many 3s.
She was easily the best athlete on the floor. It was obvious while rebounding. A vertical not many females have.
She'd be a great get for the Gophers.

Personally I think Walker is going to be a very good mid major player. I feel like for P4 though she is a little undersized for her skill set. I think she just overwhelms HS players with her strength and I can’t see her doing that at the P4 level. She has developed a solid mid range jumper though. But overall she will be a darn good mid major Player

I just think Diggs is too small for P4. She reminds me so much of Anisha Scott from Delasalle these last few years who now plays at Richmond. Competitor, gets to get spots, elite mid range but her 3 pointer and size holds her back as a P4 player in my opinion.

I think Bell the 8th grader will be heard from by the gophers, a fluid athlete for her age.

Watching State and watching a good amount of basketball this year. I expect the other Ramb
Iowa’s best guard is 5-4 Chit Chat Wright. Gophers need a true pg who can create off the dribble. They also need more lengthy and athletic post players.

Chit Chit is also one of the best shooters in the nation and has elite speed. Diggs just doesn’t have that in my opinion. I feel like I’m ripping her but me comparing her to Scott is not a diss, she is going to have a good college career, I would just be shocked if it was at the power 4 level.

With your second part of your comment, sure do we need better players to win a national title? Probably. With that said the gophers are a damn good team that probably can beat any team in the nation outside the top 4.

I think of this year sort of like the Megan Gustafson years with Iowa. They were damn good, a hard ass out but they just didn’t have enough top end talent to get over the hump. But they built a foundation of 4 star recruits and good analysis of borderline top 100 players. They built a culture and then they got the one player that said that said I’m going to put that team over the hump in Clark. The state of Minnesota has those players in Johnson and in my opinion the younger Wilson sister. We just need to continue to build a consistent winner, and it seems like Dawn is doing that with Grace, Tori, Christian, Kussow, Tori O, Ramlall and doing great with recruiting Wisconsin.

Just need that tier 1 player to stay home because you can build a national title caliber team with in state recruits of the current gophers and Olson, McGill, Johnson, Kinnepkes to name a few.

But until that happens I’m going to enjoy weekends like this because we are taking the next step as a program what is super exciting to see

Gopher women are having a great season. My wife is a Hawkeye, so I have watched a top tier program quite often. While I hope the gopher women could beat any team outside the top 4, nobody outside Minnesota would say that. They won't be playing at home. The team is missing some quickness and athleticism at the pg spot and a long lengthy 4 needed to be a top 10 type team.
Diggs has elite quickness and Walker is 6-1 already, and both are just sophmores. Walker could easily be a 6-2 PF at the high major level, and Diggs at minimum, could be a spark of the bench, she is twice as quick as anyone on the gophers roster. Watching the quickness of Ohio States guards, we need more quickness, all the top 10 teams have that.

The state of Minnesota has those players in Johnson and in my opinion the younger Wilson sister. I definitely agree here.

I don’t believe the Wilson’s were there. It looks like AIA was practicing.

We played UCLA to one of their tougher games without our most athletic player in Tori. Not saying we will win, but there is a chip, a chair and chance with her on the court to make it interesting.

I agree that we need to get more athletic in replacing Hart and Battle. I think Klick and Woodson do some of that. They will need a couple good portal players unless Dawn believes in any of the freshmen.

GG is a smart player, but I feel she is hindered by lack of athleticism at times on both ends of the floor.

For where this team lacks in athleticism, they play their rearends off on the defensive end and you don't want to lose that culture.

Excellent points.

Grace is who she is and is a great basketball player but not a great athlete. Rarely forces anything. Always a place for shooters and high IQs but the team as whole needs more quickness to ascend to the next level. But maintaining culture has to be a priority.

I mean I am not just pulling the gophers can beat any team outside of the top 4 out of nowhere. The 2 seeds in the tournament are Iowa who they beat at Iowa, Michigan who the gophers have had 2 great games with the last 2 years, Vandy who got crushed by Ole Miss the team we just beat and then LSU. I don't think it is just some huge hypothetical that the gophers can beat any team in the country outside of the top 4. Now can they do it consistently probably not but that is the next step in the process.

For the recruits you mentioned again. Diggs and Walker are both Juniors not Sophomores. Both are also not the level of recruit Cambridge or Chit Chit are, Walker and Diggs combined have one high major offer and that is Marquette for Walker that she got a week ago. I also feel bad for my comments because I think both players once again are going to have good college careers. But these power 4 conference are also not see what I am seeing. Does not mean they and I am right it just means that we have similar evaluations at the moment.

Also I agree the team probably needs to get more athletic but athleticism does not equal success. Holloway is probably our most athletic player on the team and she does not see the floor besides super specialized situations (Her role is super important to the team as a teammate however) and Klick also a very good athlete struggles to see the floor so far. I think we are underestimating what having a player of what Sophie has become does, it wears down and gets opposing bigs in foul trouble and it also is like running the ball in football it is a nice safety blanket to have. And based on Dawn bringing in Tonga and offering Logan Miller out of Andover I think Dawn values a player like that a ton and it is not going away.

We need to continue to add talented athletic players that fit the culture. Now the skilled athletic players we will also be competing again the best of the best in college basketball but weekends like this last one are a good start to have us compete in those battles.

Yes, the 5 spot may not be the most talented, but she has to be strong and a battler. Quite a few times this year, our 5s wore down the other team's paint player.

Well said. I'm also thinking that with Dawn's emphasis on defense, she's going to prefer taller guards, ideally taller than ChitChat or Addie Mack. Tori is tall and athletic and Amaya isn't that far behind (and is a great rebounder with a nice mid-range jumper). As for forwards, I want players who are athletic enough to get to the hoop and/or drive the baseline. And able to hit threes. Someone like Olivia Olson, who is probably a guard/forward mix, someone whose strength allows her to get to the hoop and do damage inside.

Such a great weekend! The time is now and this program should expect to compete for hosting, sweet 16 and beyond. Need to continue to recruit at a high level. Such an exciting time! Go Gophs!
I agree.
Going forward a top six conference finish most years if not every year... this would yield reasonable seeding (4-6) every year.
Another point would be to grow attendance to 7000 to 8000 for most conference games... and 9000 for certain games. I must be patient, while happy with the weekend attendance, I was hoping for 12000-13000... at least on Sunday.
Exhibiting conference, BTT, and NCAA success along with growing attendance, recruiting and portal grabs will fall into place.

Beat UCLA!!
Go Gophers!!!

It seems like most top 10 teams, have a 6-4/6-5 center. They have a long 6-3/6-4 PF type. They then have a quick pg of varying heights, and a couple of wings in the 6-6'1" range. They also have a bench.

Ohio st. has 3 super athlete's 5-7 to 5-9 at the guards, a 6-6 Post, and a 6-4 pf, who calls herself a guard. Those super athlete's are difference makers in the tournament, they can get their own shot, or beat the defender and get easy buckets for the team. I am not sure how many players like that Mn high school produces, but the next one up should be a must get.

Diggs probably outweighs Chit chat by 20 lbs as a JR. Chit chat isn't near as strong and can't finish, but she can shoot. Diggs can get after it on defense. If she works on her shooting I could see some schools giving her a chance. She probably has a 25 inch vertical.

Per Skim Milkey Virginia is going after Kenny Brooks (Kentucky HC) hard.

Who knows that could effect Greenway (just don’t want her in the B10)

Different time/era
Agree about different time/era. What I could track about Grace with AI:
1. Oral commitment to Arizona St. Withdrew the commitment when coach retired. Never enrolled.
2. Coach O had briefly recruited her while at South Dakota.
3. Signed NLI at West Virginia when Coach P was there, but never actually enrolled in classes or practiced.
4. Was released from her NLI when Coach P made her move... Grace followed... citing Coach P's system and the trust established during brief recruitment. She never received $$ until she was a Gopher.

Different time/era... certainly, but she has elected to stay... was or is there more money elsewhere? Perhaps, but she remains here.

Honestly it probably just boils down to her really liking Coach P and Coach P thinking the world of her when she was grossly underrecruited given her talent level. Plus Coach P is from Wisconsin.
