Future Gopher Coach Discussion

This is a disaster. Raboin turns the job down and Coyle is going to hire fuckin Brett Larson.

4-5 more years until we’re back to square one. We don’t hate Coyle enough.
Well Coyle did a great job getting rid of Motzko. Next year would have been just like this year. No need to extend the pain.
Fact is, he hasn’t hired anyone. So we will have to wait to see who it is. Then actually give the guy a couple years to prove his worth.
Keep in mind. Much easier to recruit players to play at Minnesota versus SCSU.

Hopefully the two mentioned are just the first interviews and there are other candidates that might not want to identified due to current job situation. The two listed satisfy the local candidate (Larson) and the direct tie to the Gophers criteria (Potulny) that many seem to like or demand. With that criteria satisfied and being able to say we interviewed a local and directly tied candidate Coyle should be able to go nationwide and find the best candidate. My preference is to expand nationwide or even Canadian in the search and not be limited locally. In the working world it is common to interview candidates just to see if they might be a fit.

Yes, he fired Motzko with little to no plan to replace him. I’ll wait until he actually hires someone, but the list of people that he reached out to so far was the laziest thing he possibly could’ve done and unacceptable.

Larson took a program that was set up perfect after Motzko left and tanked it. Why would you want a coach who made their program worse coaching here? At SCSU they have been more than capable of being competitive so no excuse for missing 3 tourneys in a row.

Maybe this is true, it’s just concerning that those 2 coaches are already reported as “finalists.” Hopefully it’s a smokescreen

I’m right there with you but I also knew coyle was
Our ad and the 2 choices would come down to rabs vs potulny. Now adding Larson with literally zero mention of anyone else shows that people were pretty spot on he doesn’t really know how to find a hockey coach unless it’s dumped in his lap
Hey UNK, I love your posts but do you really think that Coyle would advertise that he is talking to anyone at WMU or Denver? I just cannot believe he is that inept. I swear it sounds like half this board thinks it has played out like this...

1) Coyle takes a break from golfing, watching basketball, and hanging out at PJs house just long enough to fire his two hockey coaches. He mumbles something about a national search.
2) The following day, he has his executive assistant do a google search on D1 men's hockey coaches with Minnesota ties. This person sends them an email to gauge interest. The message probably went to spam folder but this does not worry Coyle too much.
3) Executive assistant tells Coyle the next day that there has been no response and that the Mariucci area crowd is getting restless.
4) Coyle asks where Mariucci arena is and he requests a tour. He is sort of impressed and he thinks all the mural pictures of former players are pretty cool. He also asks if the banner from 2003 was the last time we really won a national title. He is perplexed.
5) He has a golf lesson later that day, so he quickly places a call to Brett Larson at Saint Cloud. I mean what the hell... he figures he could offer it to to this guy, save a few bucks and it could be done quickly. The Executive assistant also tells him that Grant Potulny found the email in his spam folder and wants to talk. Coyle says "who is Grant Potulny again?"
6) Coyle hops on a Zoom call (the free version of zoom so it's limited to 45 minutes) with Potulny. Coyle figures this is enough to make the fan base happy and enough to keep up appearances. He starts the interview by asking Potulny his preferred pronouns and acknowledges that his office is on stolen land. Potulny says WTF are you talking about and ends the call.
7) Coyle creates his final plan based on all of that. He can't recall the Augustana coach's name, but if that guy doesn't contact him within two days, then he'll offer it to the St. Cloud guy. If St Cloud guy won't do it for a salary of $50K per year, then he'll go back to beg Potulny. If he says no, we'll just shut down the hockey program.
8) Coyle goes back to analyzing his brackets for NCAA basketball.

This was funny. And possibly closer to the truth than you want to believe lol. I guess we will see if he hires Potulny/Larson. I want to believe he isn’t an idiot and this is a smokescreen, but most of his searches have been pretty public.

I think that’s fair. Maybe Coyle figures it out that the remaining two candidates are not qualified enough and that he needs to pivot and actually try to do this “nationwide” search thing he claimed. But if it’s Larson or Potulny, it’ll be a blood bath in these threads lol
  • Official Confirmation: Augustana's athletic director indicated on social media that Raboin would remain with the team "now and for years to come".
  • Significance: It was considered a surprise that he would pass up one of the most prestigious jobs in college hockey to stay at a smaller, newer Division I program.

If anyone thinks coyle has any fucking usefulness if the end result is Brett Larson, i have no idea what to tell you
A big no to Darby Hendrickson too. Ick!

AI does amazing things...

This.
Which is why you need an ad who can listen and sell the vision of your top candidate on how you will support them with better resources to achieve their goals

Literally zero faith in Coyle to do that (and even more embarrassing if he’s trying to do this remotely because again this is a sport where the respect aspect still matters a hell of a lot)
You and I both know that even if Coyle can, talk the talk, he ain’t out actually supporting his hires.

A tangent, but writing the post actually conjured up the last time the U called me to donate to athletic department was 2018.

It used to be an annual ritual. I told them don’t call me until Coyle is fired. I did say it very respectfully, but the lady was clearly offended.

My God, they actually listened (or just don’t try).

Based on how hockey almost always goes, that we have listed these 3 (and then 2) 2 days after firing Bob and with a bunch of teams still playing out hoping to keep playing, then yes I’d be 0% surprised to see Rabs say I am committed to finishing this out at Augie and basically any team who’s still alive to tell you to F off.

The short part of “advertising “ it is, why are you advertising anything while teams are playing or could be playing? And if you’re deciding between these 2 2 days into your national search, your did something quite wrong

Pure satire, yet you convinced yourself there are kernels of truth in it. 🙃

You aren't in the know. You'll never be in the know. You will definitely be one of the last to know.

The LARPing is entertaining at least. High stakes. Low information. A Dopamine pot that is boiling over with anonymous posters claiming they know the outcome. Exciting times!

In fairness, if that is how Coyle is operating, he's become more savvy since he announced the Whalen firing. He's improving!

Does anyone know if Raboin has children? If so, maybe the misses put her foot down and said no to the suburban schools.

Ano

I was told they've just been practicing a lot.

Wait a minute, since when in your world do women have that kind of clout? They are to obey the man. Or are you.......transitioning?

Lol yeah, the overall premise of Coyle being lazy and not caring enough right now I do believe, as well as many others. I’m not making anything up myself, it’s being reported by people a lot more connected than you would ever be.

But clearly you’re a weirdo, so I probably shouldn’t be giving this the time of day.

Anyone have anything from a reputable source?
There’s stuff from Vegoe regarding Rabs and that it’s been heard from several people, though to be fair no one likely knows for certain and is silly of coyle to even be putting pressure on Rabs while their season is still alive

Or tonka, wayzata, edina or any of another number of fine public schools depending on where you want to live
They will all be going downhill very quickly with the demographics of the kids under 18 in Minnesota. Private will be the way.

If people don't think enough reliable sources have said Raboin is out, wake up

It’s just silly how fast everything is reportedly moving. I get we want to get this done quickly but the transfer portal doesn’t open until after the Frozen Four. This is a job that should be casting a wide net of good coaches. Instead we had 3 finalists right away that were just the easiest to contact. I hope they realize to step back and actually think.

Russo, Vegoe, and Jup are all you need. Plus the tweet from Augustana.

Do you expect a public statement on it from the U or something?

seriously, people on here saying that none of us know anything. Well yeah, but it takes 2 minutes to look up reporters that are well connected and see what they’re saying, not just making shit up here.

Yeah, I saw the Tweet. The rest all definitively stated that Raboin rejected it and is out? Lots of people jumping off emotional cliffs here. Not sure I’m ready to join you.

Are you really going to make us post the tweets for you or something? Go check, they all say he's out.

Hearing a lot of Potulny steam. He’s way down my list but who knows maybe he’d thrive here. Can’t deny his passion for Gopher hockey.
