“He did an unbelievable job,” Dutcher said of Medved. “To go into a team (place) like Michigan and take them right down to the final wire. And see some of the other games, they were just unbelievable and had some great upsets.

“But then they lost to some teams like a Rutgers (and) that isn’t that good. So, they just don’t have the depth. But he did an outstanding job. It was good to see upwards of 8,000 people at Williams Arena again.”

What about Minnesota’s fate in the upcoming tournament?

“You can’t win a tournament with a six-player roster,” Dutcher said. “Sometimes five player roster. They just don’t have the depth. They’re capable, as we saw, of beating some really good teams, but you’ve gotta have more depth than they have to make a tournament run.”

I’m hopeful Niko’s teams will shoot the ball well like Dutcher’s teams from 1975-1982. (Of course having Thompson; McHale; Breuer; Tucker; Lockhart and Mitchell helped.). The ‘76 home game with Indiana with both teams shooting over 60% was one of the great offensive performances in Williams Arena history. I would love to see a film/video of the game.

Says the coach that typically only played 7. Maybe 8 if there was foul trouble, but he usually played a matchup zone to limit fouls, too.

I was there...definitely memorable. The things that stood out to me the most was the intensity of the game. The atmosphere. The tension. The crowd noise. Could the Gophers beat the undefeated Hoosiers?

Quinn Bucker was so muscular, quick, relentless on defense and Ray Williams played unaffected by his opponent on offense. Quinn provided elite pressure on defense, but Ray was amazing on offense. Very fun!

The years of Musselman from 1971 through Dutcher in the mid '80's were just great basketball. The atmosphere was electric every night. The rouser had full throated participation every home game! Don't think I missed a game in that time period.
