Arizona Cardinals set to release QB Kyler Murray after 7 seasons

The former No. 1 overall pick will now get a chance at a fresh start elsewhere for the first time in his career
And more fun 🥳

From staff writer at the Athletic. Zach Rosenblatt on his prediction of the Vikes QB room for 2026.

Vikings: JJ McCarthy, Joe Flacco and Anthony Richardson

This looks like an underwhelming outcome on paper considering all the buzz coming out of Indy regarding the Vikings' interest in options such as Murray, Smith and Cousins, among others. But the reality is: Minnesota is invested in at least trying to make it work with McCarthy, and the idea is that the Vikings are bringing in legitimate competition for him this offseason, not that they are finding his replacement.

Murray is possible here, especially since he becomes a free agent next week, but that would be a clear sign that they've given up on McCarthy. There was a sense from people I talked to at the combine that Cousins and the Vikings are unlikely to reunite, though it can’t be ruled out entirely. As mentioned above, I’m not sure Smith breaks free either — though if he does, he’d be my pick. I see the Vikings throwing a couple things at the wall to see what sticks. Derek Carr would be an interesting option, too, but it would be hard to believe he’d want to join the Vikings if it meant “competing” for a starting job.

Flacco makes some sense as a fallback option. He showed last season in Cincinnati that he’s still capable of leading an offense: He threw for 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in nine games. He’s a good veteran presence to have in any quarterback room, especially one with two young quarterbacks, and he’s looking for an opportunity to at least compete to start — which he’d get in Minnesota. Also, according to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, Flacco was “very much in play” for Minnesota last season before it settled on Carson Wentz — who shouldn’t be ruled out entirely as an option either, by the way.

As for Richardson: His physical and athletic talents are tantalizing even if there’s plenty to be concerned about, particularly his struggles to complete passes at a consistent rate in the NFL, and that time he took himself out of a game because he was tired. Still, there’s not really any downside to adding him to the room considering a trade shouldn’t cost much, and it gives O’Connell a quarterback with tools to develop. There was also, of course, that viral moment O’Connell and Richardson shared in 2024 where O’Connell told him: “You’re a bad dude. And you’re gonna play a long time in this league. Go to work every day. Good things will happen for you. I still believe in you.”

(As an aside: I have gotten the Vikings correct in back-to-back seasons. I predicted Sam Darnold in 2024 and Wentz last year so… [shrug emoji])

KOC offense is about getting the ball out, rhythm and timing that's not Kyler, factor his off the field work habits, it's a problem if there are incentives in his contract to watch film, he is just simply too dumb and lazy to thrive in Minnesota. He's also injury prone like JJ McCarthy is. If I were a betting man I think it's Mac Jones, did the Kyle Shannahan, Brock Purdy backup thing like Sam Darnold, similar offense, makes the most sense, but also being a vikings it's probably going to be someone nobody sees coming and will probably all hate it lol
I appreciate your detailed reply.

You do realize that the system can be adjusted to the personnel on the roster, don’t you?

There are many reasons why Belichick was such a great NFL HC, including how the Offense was adapted to the roster -

Had two elite two TEs, which he drafted in 2010, and runs two TE sets which baffled teams.

When he had Cori Dillion and LaGarrette Blount featured a lot of power running.

When he had Moss, 💣 away; saw in an interview with Randy where he explained to Bill how he could run down the field and open it up the deep third, which Bill had never had before.

As noted by Slim Shady, I think Murray is the best of realistic potential candidates, whereas when I posted the poll I included “fun”unrealistic choices: Jones. Burrow and Brosmer.

Jones will command a premium deal in 2027, so that may not make him as attractive as he seems. Willis is estimated to get $25-30M. If Jones has a big year, are you ready to shell out the kind of bread then?

I get how one could draw this conclusion but I don't agree with it, at all. The notion that the Vikings/KOC are out on JJM at this point is really kinda laughable. The only way that is close to reality is if they truly think he just can't stay healthy.

JJM is not some player who played games and looked over his head and completely lost, throwing balls in the dirt and in the second row of the stands. He made big time throws, had command of the offense, and moved the ball. His ability to stay on the field is a big deal, no doubt about it. But I would bet just about anything that the Vikings are not "OUT" on JJ McCarthy

Here’s additional thoughts on Murray from a column in The Athletic regarding potential landing spots for him -

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings are expected to have serious discussions this week about Murray. But he has already been on their radar. They’re in the market for an experienced, productive and reliable starter who isn’t going to break the bank. Murray addresses a lot of those issues.

In Minnesota’s eyes, Murray’s raw talent is undeniable. He throws accurately. He is a playmaker. It’s easy to envision Murray operating many of the Vikings’ boot concepts, allowing him to get out on the run and focus on one area of the field. Murray’s interest in Minnesota makes sense, too. Coach Kevin O’Connell has worked well with veteran quarterbacks, and superstar receiver Justin Jefferson offers an outlet that Murray hasn’t had.

There are at least two major questions, though: Would the Vikings prefer more of a system fitwith a player like Geno Smith, if he’s released by the Raiders? And what would Murray’s presence mean for 23-year-old quarterback J.J. McCarthy? The Vikings love to throw the football over the middle. That’s not Murray’s biggest strength. The Vikings have also wanted to thread the needle of finding a quarterback who keeps McCarthy’s development door open, but Murray would almost certainly receive the starting job upon arrival.

The Vikings brass will be talking through these dynamics this week. Murray, though, is a viable option. — Alec Lewis, Vikings reporter

I posted bits from Lewis article the other day where they said, he wasn’t the leader they had envisioned and had much work to do in the growing up department (see below the dotted line)

There might be multiple reasons, if they decide to move on from him.

——————————

Simply put, the team knows McCarthy must make a major leap forward on and off the field.

The Vikings also knew they were drafting a young player. What they did not envision, especially following an encouraging first training camp that preceded his torn meniscus, was the challenge posed by some of the more elemental aspects of being the face of a franchise. These growth hurdles have become widely known among NFL executives and coaches, and they were frequent topics in Indianapolis.

Please, dear Lord, don't let the Vikings go after Geno...

I haven't heard anyone mention this nationally, like anywhere, but part of me thinks Flacco would really be the best option for the Vikings. He checks a lot of boxes, and it probably fits for HIM as well; a team that can compete, but no pressure to carry the load, and probably not a high number

Glad to see all the “experts” are finally catching up with me 😎

The best advice I could offer to anyone is to NOT listen to "Danny O". Good Lord, that guy is a clueless clown. But it sure sounds like there's a lot of steam behind it.

There are a lot of good arguments FOR and AGAINST the Vikings bringing in Murray. I trust they've done their homework. They need to think about the locker room dynamics when bringing in Murray.

Per Lewis, they considered him last year before settling on Wenz, so who knows🤷‍♂️

Can only vote for one and you can’t change it.
Who yah got?

I’m going with Murray.
Yahtzee my Guru😃, Geno’s off the table!

Let’s wait till Wednesday to announce, so it’s Vikings talk all day long for everyone on the known planet😃

I only listen to hair; which is righteous.

Gotta agree with former WR Steven Smith on this one. He just gave a brutally honest take on NFL Network on whether or not J Jettas would want a QB like Kyler Murray. Said no WR wants a QB that is "ripping and running" (like Murray), you want a guy that is going to be in the pocket, going through his progressions. No good WR that wants a QB like that.

For the most part, good/great NFL QBs can stand and deliver the ball from the pocket.

Does he know that they started following each other on Instagram after the Cards announced their plans to release him🤷‍♂️

The counter to that argument is that Murray has never had a premium receiver like JJ in his prime that can create that kind of separation and dominate.

Dominque Foxworthy who I do like/respect says we’re a SB Contender Baby with Murray at the helm,

Sux it @Spaulding!No!

He’s officially Free

Slim Tubee @Slim Tubby

Outside of making a massive offer for Burrow, Murray has been my preferred target for QB in 2026. That doesn't mean he'll be very good, though. I've watched enough of him to know that he can flat out suck balls at times, has a ton of passes in battlted down at the LOS and is quick to tuck and run before reading all of his routes.

It sure seems like we're about to find out for ourselves. I sure hope we get better play from our OL this year or it won't really matter who is taking the snaps for us.

That may well be true my friend, but join me and spend a summer basking in irrational optimism - it’s a helluva drug😎.

All aboard -

He had DeAndre Hopkins when he was still good, and had a good year throwing him the ball, including the "Hail Murray" pass against the Bills. I was at that game during Covid, what a ridiculous way to watch a football game, even at the time, forget about what we NOW know)

Murray can flat out play, better than the average non-Cardinals fan realizes. I've never had an issue with that part of the package. It's just what Murray are you getting mentally. Just way, way, way too many instances and stories of interactions in the locker room and with teammates, even on the field.

If it happens, nobody will be cheering louder than me; I'm just saying be careful what you wish for.

Thus article addresses the attitude issues you mentioned; the Cards embarrassed him with the study clause so he responded as ‘many young 20 year olds would.

Take it for what it's worth but Luke Braun, the Locked on Vikings pod guy, said this morning that from what he has gathered right now:

Kyler Murray is down to the Vikings and the Steelers
The Vikings are down to Murray and Cousins

Certainly sounds like Murray is doing his due diligence, giving teams the chance to court him, etc

Cousins would be deeply disappointing at this juncture

What happens to Rodgers if Murray signs with the Steelers and the Vikings sign Cousins?
