STrib: Could the Gophers find a way to duplicate Indiana’s football success?

Actually, this past year we had two games that were good football watching Wisconsin and Nebraska, our first and last games against shitty opponents were OK and the rest of them sucked.
Rest of them sucked… Oregon, Iowa, Ohio St, Northwestern and California sucked!
NW State was a scheduling issue
Mich St, Purdue, Rutgers we won the games, yay, maybe not sucked but disappointing performances for sure
So, ya … agree

This is delusional. Indiana has a billionaire backing them.... that's all that needs to be said.
You're right, thats its. That's why Indiana had the number one ranked recruiting class for both freshman and transfers, and once everyone got a look at the roster they bought, the Hoosiers started last season as the heavy betting favorites to win the CFP. That's what happened, right?

Idk wtf you're talking about...but the U/board of regents isn't going to change their entire philosophy without a Cuban type backer coming in. Very. Simple. Stuff.

I think the point being made (sarcastically) is that his recruiting and transfer classes were pretty average on paper.

Guess it is a good sign of the overall state of the program when the crowd that thrives on negativity has to complain about not getting enough style points in wins. :)

Cignetti is on track to being one of the GOATs in college football coaching. PJ is in the bottom 10 percentile P4 relating to game day prep and game day coaching. We are pretty unwatchable more than half the time Indiana plays to destroy the opponent and is great fun to watch.

Apples and oranges even if the money started pouring in here. We might get into a better bowl game than the dogs we have been in 8 of PJ’s 9 years, but that would be our zenith.
Bottom 10%? Lol

I didn't realize that Mark Cuban just graduated from Indiana. I guess that's why he just decided to start supporting them.

Very. Simple. Stuff.

Idk why he upped support the last few years, but that's reality. I'm not sure what sarcastic point you're trying to make?

1) School makes commitment to athletics in a way it has not.
2) Hires an extremely competent head coach.
3) Wins in impressive style and convincingly.
4) Makes case to alumni with $$
5) Donors sign on.

This scenario is far more simple than:

1) Billionaire donates large sums to University.
2) Hopes the school will make a commitment to Football.
3) Hopes coach who believes in year zero can elevate his performance with more money.
4) 2 & 3 happen

Nothing smart ass about it.

Basics of investment strategy. Watch any episode of Shark Tank and pay attention to how Mark Cuban evaluates the opportunities.

That third point of really running up the scores with that dog crap schedule the first year was a smart move for optics.

2 main factors are Cuban was shown Proof of Concept (what you are spelling out in the first scenario) AND by then he was no longer Majority Owner of the Dallas Mavericks. Also stepping away from Shark Tank.

That has to free up a lot of time and financial resources to other endeavors, such as Hoosier football.

What was the commitment they made before hiring Cig? I agree with everything else you wrote.

Never apologize for any win.

That said. Crap schedules are gifts. Use them.

If we'd beaten all of the teams we played at home like we beat Nebraska, this offseason would feel a lot different.

Didn't say it did. The post I responded to said athletics.
I don't think that's really valid?

He created a Sports Media center for students to explore new sports broadcast technology, like virtual reality and 3D replay systems.

How does that have anything to do with recruiting or buying players to IU varsity teams?

I have also read he donated to the IU Rugby club team in the past, again though not a varsity sport.

The article I read specifically said the $5 million donation "provided advanced technology for IU athletics." What's the point you're trying to make? That MN can replicate what IU is doing if they fire PJ?

I think we both think Cuban donating money to directly support the IU football program after the 2024 season played a huge role in their 2025 season.

I disagree that the donation you're referring to in 2015 had even the slightest to do with directly helping IU varsity athletic teams succeed. Any more than some person donating money to the U library would help Gopher sports teams win.
