What's the appropriate time to wait before hating Indiana?

This. Money rules for the most part. How many players would we've been able to keep if we had a higher budget for NIL?

I’m all for IU. NIL Is what it is, so if it wasn’t IU it would be just the same OSUs and UGAs spending the same amount and going to the ‘chip. This is what commonly comes up in this forum, if there was a bunch more NIL that is the only way to get enough players for a playoff caliber team and no one here would be downplaying the results like so many have said about Cignetti.

Under the old way of doing things Cignetti would have almost certainly improved them but he would not have been able to make them into a contender. The fact that in 2 years he has taken Indiana from lower tier Big Ten to National Champion is 100% a function of the current college football landscape.

He clearly as a really good eye for talent and had the resources he needed to go get the players he needed to quickly compete at a really high level.

Bottom line is that everything came together nearly perfectly for them. Right coach/coaches, large financial investment into the program, great player evaluation/development, and good fortune in terms of avoiding a lot of injuries at key positions.

Will be interesting to see if they can maintain their spot among the top programs in college football, tough club to get into and remain a part of year in and year out.

Some of his best players, even this year, are the "core" guys he brought over form JMU. No prima donnas. Played with a chip on their shoulders. Cig is going to get another good (great?) transfer QB this year, but I think he is going to lose that JMU base--which I believe was a unicorn assemblage of under-rated and unrated talent. He's a great coach: team prep is incredible, no early game dithering, always agressively presses his advantage (whatever it turns out to be) in every game. But that special group of JMU guys whose shoulders he rode into town on are drifting away. He might come back down to earth a bit next season. Or maybe not. We'll find out.
 



Not for a while.

My dad is a big Indiana fan and alum. I'm a Gopher. We've been in shared football frustration for decades. His worse than mine - I saw the Gophers win 12 bowl games in the time between Indiana's 1991 Copper Bowl win (now the Rate Bowl) and when they won the Rose Bowl this year.

I admit I'm super jealous but also very happy for him. He's not a bandwagon guy at all. Been through all the bad times since he saw them go to the Rose Bowl as a college student in 1967, when they shared the title with Minnesota and Purdue. I'm glad he got to see IU win it all at age 78, even if he wasn't able to travel for the big run.

Most of the Indiana folks are still in the glow of it all and in legit shock. I'll start being a hater if and when they get obnoxious about it. We're not there yet. This is a great American sports story and hope for all of us fans of the mid-tier.
 

How long? Depends on the outcome of Indiana vs Minnesota this fall. If we win they are the defending National Champions. If we get bounced...I hate em.

The only problem with this take is I believe they now will have a very big influx of cash, not just from Mark Cuban, but from all the Indiana bandwagon fans that are coming out of the woodwork! They took over a stadium in Miami's back yard with some say 75% of the attendance. If they'll pay $5,000-$10,000 for a seat, they'll throw some major dollars at NIL. It will take a while for the fans to get spoiled with the success and start drifting away again.

Indiana is very similar to the Gophers. They have a lot of competition in their state for sports entertainment dollars - both college and pro. The challenge will be keeping the attention of their "fans" over time, but short term, I think they'll ride the wave!

Their transfer haul this year is incredible. They’ll stay as a college football elite if they can continue these kind of portal hauls in my opinion. Their high school recruiting hasn’t been great, but it will improve quickly.
