Jerry Kill wasn't contacted until Sat after Edsall changed his mind and decided not to take MN job...still don't know if it was before or after the game...but Edsall was the guy that was offered and expected to accept job last week and then changed his mind on Sat. Edsall didn't inform team but did inform UConn AD...guess they changed his mind or the win did...

Damn kicker! Source?

I think we may have ended up on the better end of that deal.

I think Coach Kill is going to do great things here.

Does anyone really believe Edsall took the UConn program from FCS status to a BCS game in the course of a decade then decided he was going to leave a month before enjoying the fruits of his labor?

That's hard to believe.

If this is true, Maturi must have felt like a guy who waited until the night before his wedding anniversary to buy his wife a gift. Then running to Sears and getting his wife a toaster.

Edsall must have realized that an 8-4 record in the Big Ten won't get you to a BCS bowl and had a change of heart.

Kill said he didn't hear from Minnesota, "until Saturday night" so I'd guess Edsall changed his mind after winning the game.

Edsall got throttled by Temple. Temple got throttled by Northern Ill. We win.:cool02:

Baloney.

I strongly had this sense as well. I sent Doogie a tweet after the UConn game asking him that very question. It wouldn't be the first time. We'll probably never get 100% confirmation on this, but I believe it.

I don't think it is baloney. Kill himself said this was a very fast moving process, and that "I didn't know any of this was going to happen until I visited with Minnesota on Saturday night".

Probably not. Maybe I should be FireKillGuy? Or KillKillGuy? Or maybe Cosgrove will be retained. Yeah, that would be great.

I agree with the above poster in that there would be no better name than FireMaturiGuy

That would be awesome!

How do you know this for sure?

Mike Max made a comment on the sports show that Edsall was the guy if he lost on Saturday. That was his sources. Sid disagreed with him.

So lemme get this straight. Edsall wins the game against USF at just before 11:30 PM local time down in Tampa, sprints into the tunnel, takes a couple minutes by himself to think over his decision deep within a Raymond James Stadium corridor, calls Maturi to say "no thanks, Joel," and only THEN does JM make the call to Kill at the earliest about 11:00PM local time in DeKalb to have a serious discussion for the first time about a multi-million dollar life-changing decision of being the next Gopher head coach? He must have just been praying Jerry and Rebecca hadn't gone to bed yet!

This makes about as much sense as Chris Petersen wanting to coach here next year.

Only if he lost? Was that his condition to Maturi, or did the win simply make him change his mind?

He made it sound like Edsall decided conditions before game. Edsall knew a payday was coming either way. South Florida saved us a lot of money in my opinion.

I had Edsall saying yes on Thursday and basically a deal was done...he was coming in on Sunday...my understanding was he informed the AD but not the team...something happened as it got wishy washy on friday and obviously fell apart on Saturday...not sure why...maybe UConn offered more or an extension or something or guilt, we built this together, lets finish it...or whatever.

Kill is Better than Edsall

I , too am a bit skeptical about the change of mind after the game on Saturday night. Maybe he had a change of heart during the day.

I am glad we have Kill and not Edsall. Kill has been recruiting the Chicago area and Illinois, Missouri,Wisconsin, and even Minnesota. He talked about a 5 hour recruiting territory that is important. He will keep most of his staff and bring them here. Maybe Edsall will get a different job in the next year or two. Maybe Conn will give him a new extension. Kill wants to be here.

Maybe Edsall is just the kind of guy who didn't want to ditch a program who is BCS bound like RichRod or Brian Kelly

I really don't think that's the first time he had ever spoken to him about the job, but it's not inconceivable that through all this time, they kept Kill kinda as a standby, where if things broke down, they'd go to him and offer it to him. I'm thinking Edsall had backed out prior to the game, if any of this is true whatsoever.
