Koi Perich Transfer Portal

Lots of truth in this. What hurts the most is that he is the face of our program. We will be fine on the field simply because there isn’t one player on any team that is bigger than the program.

Assuming Koi leaves for the NFL after next year. Who would you rather have for one more season: Anthony Smith or Koi Perich
Smith. Although I’d rather lose a good player to the NFL than the portal.

$$$ and the chance to play in the "Big Time". Unfortunately he sees the ceiling here.
This is correct in my opinion.

He stayed in-state and gave Fleck two years. Fleck in return showed him a likely 8-5 ceiling going forward for how he (Fleck) runs this program.

Wild guess is Koi only intends to play one more year of college, and he wants to give it a shot at a helmet school that will be contending for a natty next year. Not necessarily just for the money, but that will also be a side bonus.

I wish Koi well wherever he goes next year, and in the NFL after that!

Didn't live up to the preseason hype this year (who could of) but is a very talented player. Agree we probably can't justify the price tag based on performance this year, but we'll probably be hearing his name and thinking about what could of been next year.

With how many players go in portal you are going to always find a replacement option. Might not be as good but there will be options.
Like Marcellus Marshall?

Hate calling dude out, but he just stunk

The fact that these things are widely known before the portal even opens is part of the problem. It’s the Wild West out there.
100% tampering

Also, in Premiere League soccer (possibly all major leagues as well), at least when a star player on a lower team gets purchased by an upper team, the upper team has to financially compensate the lower team for that plucking.

No such thing in college football. Makes it a shitty product

Didn't Koi tell us this was a possibility last year? Dude wants to win more than the Quick Lane and Rate Bowls. As much as you'd like to see a guy stay and help elevate a program, the reality is he's only one of 105 and as much as some on here wear maroon and gold glasses, this roster is a very long way from the CFP.

Twitter says he has multiple big time suitors and it will be hard to keep him.
I doubt he'll come back if he goes on any official visits to any of the premier teams. Plus his agency is chopping at the bits to get a larger payday.

I get the posts saying college sports is a business and he's going in search of more money. But honestly, to me it's another sign that if this is going to be treated like a professional business with players getting paid, then contracts need to start getting introduced for a certain number of years.
Once my magical collective bargaining agreement goes in place, I'd like to see the new players association/union agree to the following when a high school recruit signs with a college:

Years 1-2 = if you transfer, you have to sit out the next season
Year 3 = something like Restricted Free Agent
Year 4 = Unrestricted Free Agent

Perich vs other Gopher safeties...
---------------------------------------------------------
Perich (2024): 28 solo / assist, 3 PD, 5 INT, 2.5 TFL
Perich (2025): 39 solo / 43 assist, 2 PD, 1 INT, 1 SACK, 1 FF, 3 TFL, 1 TD, 26.3 av kick return

VS

Brown (2025): 40 solo / 16 assist, 4 PD, 2 INT, 4 TFL
Brown (2024): 34 solo / 29 assist, 4 PD, 2 INT, 3 TFL
Nubin (2023): 34 solo / 34 assist, 4 PD, 5 INT, 1 SACK, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 TFL
Nubin (2022): 37 solo / 18 assist, 3 PD, 4 INT, 1 FF, 2 TFL
Howden (2022): 40 solo / 18 assist, 5 PD, 2 INT, 3.5 TFL
Nubin (2021): 35 solo / 14 assist, 2 PD, 3 INT, 1 TFL
Howden (2021): 34 solo / 9 assist, 5 PD, 1.5 TFL
Winfield Jr (2019): 62 solo / 26 assist, 1 PD, 7 INT, 3 SACK, 2 FF, 3.5 TFL, 1 TD
---------------------------------------------------------
Thoughts:

In 2024, I would start him over Brown. But not in 2025. If Perich didn't play in 2025 I'm not sure the Gophers lose any more games due to defense. A young guy would step up and solidify the role, just like every year. In fact, we probably win the Cal game. Not saying Perich isn't athletically gifted. I am saying that his play in 2025 was about the minimum from what I expect from a safety playing for the Gophers.
According to GGR (Gopher Gridiron Radio podcast), the scheme we tended to play on defense and the fact that opposing teams knew who he was, limited his opportunity for picks far more this year.

Obviously that's just one stat, but tends to be a "end all, be all" kind of stat for a lot of people when they think of DB's.

Lot of things that a player contributes on the field that don't necessarily get captured by a stat line.

Additionally, the Gophers can’t win if Koi is one of the highest paid players on the team. PJ’s teams need to be built around the trenches first. That’s where the majority of investment needs to go.

And this right here is why I will never give one dime to NIL.
Agreed.

Unlimited free agency makes CFB a shitty product for all but the elite programs. But then, it's kinda always been that way anyway .... and us poor saps keep coming back to the trough

I tend to agree, I don't think he goes in the portal if there's a real chance at him coming back. I suppose it could be a last ditch effort to get the money he wants, but considering how popular he was in his time here, face of the program and all of that, even if he comes back that's going to take a hit as well. Koi going to get a lot on the open market, it is what it is. I could see Miami with Heatherman, I could see Ohio State taking another crack at him, he will have his pick of suitors

There was a guy on men's basketball as well, not that long ago? Announced transferring to Cal but then something happened and he came back instead
Matz Stockmon, initially transferred from papa Pitino Louisville program. He was going to get pushed out when it look like Geno Crandell was going to transfer here. Then Geno went elsewhere and Matz had his spot back. There may have been an issue with transferring all of his credits too back when that mattered seven whole years ago

A little late to the party on this one but has been interesting to see the range of emotions on the posts in this thread.

I totally get the anger/frustration/sadness towards the player and the current college football landscape.

Less clear on how exactly this is Fleck's fault but assume the ones using this as a reason to take a shot at Fleck are the same handful that hate everything he does. And this is not about protecting Fleck at all costs I just legit don't understand what a coaching staff is supposed to do when a starter elects to transfer.

In the end we have done a good job over the years retaining our key players but there are going to be losses. Bucky Irving, Phillip Daniels and now probably Koi Perich are guys I am sure the coaching staff made every effort to retain but for one reason or another couldn't make it happen.

Would have loved to see Koi play his entire college career here (still might but seems unlikely). But in the end it is the unfortunate reality of this backwards college landscape right now. Every player is an unrestricted free agent and sometimes they are going to go chasing after something else.

I got the same sense watching his body language. It was off all year, and he had a B- season at best.
Totally agree. I just don't see him playing for someone like Ohio State after his season this year. I'm sure someone will take a chance on him but his play this season didn't do him any favors. He may be a starter level for most B1G teams but I think he's 3rd/4th round NFL talent at best.

this is being put into contracts and i'd guess will be more and more going forward. if you can put buyouts on coaches, no reason they won't on players.

Once again, faster we get to a CBA, the better

AD needs to step it up. I’m pretty sure Coyle won’t even start a GoFundMe, let alone land a whale.
A GoFundMe for a college football player?? Your joking right. And what Gopher Alumi are considered a "whale?. Nobody, becide Denny Sandford, and that bridge is burned.
