Per Pat:

Then again, for an old-timer with standards, this was a lousy season:

One excellent win over Nebraska; the embarrassment of scheduling Northwestern (La.) State (W, 66-0); humiliating losses to Oregon, Ohio State and especially Iowa; wins against the dregs of the Big Ten (Rutgers, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue — combined 6-39 in conference); and piling up 252 yards to defeat New Mexico in overtime in a bowl game.

Gopher Hater? Not me.

I want better for you, Goldy-heads. I have standards.

Go Gophers!!

Awesome! Please beat somebody and be relevant 🤷🏾‍♂️

Yes Pat we’d all love to beat the best teams in the country. Your “standards” haven’t been met in 60 years, so some of us have swallowed reality and lowered them instead of being miserable every year.
Yes, you have.

If you think you can be better, or think you can't, you're often correct.

The one good thing about this era of NIL is that people like Pat, who bitch about the Gophers not meeting their standard, now can make an impact. I'm quite sure he has the means to have an impact if that truly is important to him.

He never has these same standards for the Minnesota Twins.......his favorite sport.

Get some standards with that schit outfit, Pat!

Yes, he does. Rip city. Justified.

And unlike the Gophers, the Twins DO have billionaire owners who  choose to be cheap uninspiring asshats.

If the Twins left, I seriously wouldn't care, and I used to follow them religiously.

Patrick being Patrick

Pat is behind the times. His standards don't equate to today's standards. And the Gophers are not up to today's standards in regards to NIL and lacks the commitment to being a top BIG program.. He fails to recognize that. IMO, he isn't a Gopher hater but one who fails to understand the reality of where the Gophers are in the world of CFB.

Great read!

No I hope not. I love gopher sports and the Vikes, wolves but the Twins are my number 1. I would be so upset if they left.

To be honest, I've always liked Pat. Not because os his writing, but for him being the anti-Sid back in the day.

I read the column.

Questions and comments:

— What exactly is Reusse asking for? Fire Fleck? If so, please come out with it in plain language. State your case directly. If not, what is it that you want to see happen, exactly, Patrick? What is your point? Are you telling Gopher fans how to feel about their team? Are some of us showing too much enthusiasm for your taste, Pat?

— There's more than a bit of dishonesty in this column. Reusse implies that 'the Gopher faithfull' think that Fleck's 8 win Gopher team in 2025 is equal to or better than an 8 win Gopher team that went to the Rose Bowl in the early 60s. C'mon, Pat. That's B.S. and you know it. And it's insulting, of course. Maybe that's the point. But here's the truth: defending Fleck and pointing out real accomplishments is not the same as putting our coach 'on a pedestal'.

Think about this: Pat is at the point in his life where he has an opportunity to be the one and only wise veteran sports commentator in this market; The Sports Sage. He doesn't have to stoop to being a clowning KFAN entertainer, relying on repetitive schtick to generate listeners (or clicks). Pat's a writer, and he has his own column. I hope he doesn't blow his chance to go out with some class.

Reusse claims he has old-school standards. I'm hoping he lives up to them.

What a great article if he had replaced the word lousy with average

I would also probably opt for "average" as opposed to "lousy" but given the 3 beat downs, especially to Iowa, I can not really say I have an issue with it.

Also this part for 80% of the Gophers Big 10 Wins: Rutgers, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue — combined 6-39 in conference.

Uff da.

At least the Gophers did not make the total 7-38 for those 4 teams they beat (at Home).

Ultimately sports are supposed to be fun. Do I wish for more? Absolutely. Do I wish my favorite teams did bigger and better things? Of course.

But if you can't at least enjoy some of the big moments and wins, what's the point of being a fan to begin with? It's very possible it's 2050 and this program has still never done more than it has under Fleck so far. What a waste of time that would be then if you missed out on some of the successes along the way.

There's not even a remote hint suggesting that Fleck should be fired. None. Zero. Reusse is taking issue with Gopher/Fleck acolytes calling him (Pat) a "hater". Nothing more, IMO.

There's nothing in the article that suggests otherwise with respect to class. He points out several things that Fleck and his players are rightly lauded for.

The entire column is about Reusse's feelings being hurt by mean kids on GopherHole? Uh, no. Read it again.

If a writer has to stoop to dishonesty, he's weakening his own argument.

No one has ever suggested that Fleck's 2025 team is equal to or better than a Gopher Rose Bowl team from the 60s.

Since you posed it as a question, the answer is, no. That's not what the entire column is about, nor was I suggesting that.

The first 18 paragraphs laud how the Gopher football team handles themselves and takes shots at ICE.

Isn't he kind of saying exactly that. The performance on the field matches the support of the program...I actually think the on-field performance is better than the support behind the program.

What would you say was Reusse's over-arching point in this column?

Brilliant post. Well said.
