Who else would you want? You take this job you get fired. No big names would risk leaving their current job security to take such a big risk for this job.

Exactly. This is a coaching killing job. Lou Holtz was the last guy to leave the job on his own terms. Based on the current state of this program, the next coach will likely be fired as well. What big name coach wants to stake his reputation on this program? No one!!!

Fulmer or Shannon would have taken the job. I'd much rather have either.

If it's true that every name we went after turned us down, you go to the one name that we know didn't:

Mike Leach

Baggage or not, this hire needed to make a big splash and although Kill is a solid coach, a lot of Gopher fans are very underwhelmed.

Ummmm, it was only a few short years ago that Charlie Strong, Bo Pelini, Lane Kiffen, and Leslie Frazier wanted this job.

Exactly monsonville. Anyone who thought a biggie would actually come to Minnesota and turn around a program that has floundered for 40-50 years is out in left field, or not even in the ball park. Programs such as Alabama, Texas, USC, etc are reserved for them.

Those of you who took Maturi seriously over his babble about a Tubby Smith hire have not been paying attention. Maturi talks too much and says too little. But he is the AD and the hire is in his job description.

I welcome Coach Kill and I hope he can duplicate his success here at the UM.

Believe me, I wanted Leach; that was my no. 1 guy, but it just was not going to happen. Do you really think an admin. wants to hire a coach that is in the midst of suing his former employer and a another company. NO WAY!! Talk about distractions, taking depositions, settlement discussions, meetings about the case, etc. Leach has brought some high profiled lawsuits and there is a price to be paid for these lawsuits. No school wants to carry that baggage. Plus, it could certainly affect Leach's coaching with all these distractions because if he goes down in flames, I can guarantee you that he will be sued for malicious prosecution and other causes of action.

This is the only level-headed, worthwhile post I've read in here this evening.

I detest Leach but this is 100% correct. If it gets down to someone like Kill you have to roll the dice on Leach.

Leach, who inherited a program from Spike Dykes, just wanted to use us for his lawsuit.

Leach would be exciting, no doubt. But if you were the AD or pres, I doubt very much if you would want any part of that either. I wouldn't have hired him.

Leach, or a high end OC or DC. $$ talks and offering a guy 1.2 million for 5 years will open eyes.

Kill has won everywhere he's been. I'm happy to have him.

Thats why I posted the what would happen if Leach wasn't hired last weekend, because I could see all these people pining for the impossible....yet they still seem not to have gotten it. These are the same fans that will rip Kill mercilessly after the gophers go 3 and out on their first possession of the Spring game, because they just didn't get theri delusional way....

Oh idk how bout the guy who came out in the papers saying he'd take the job and is 10x the coach jerry kill will ever be!!!

It's a coach killing job because they keep hiring bad coaches.

I love Leach, but his life is a train wreck right now. Do we really need/want a coach whose life is a train wreck trying to fix a fb program that is a train wreck? Not really. Accept the fact that Leach was not hired and embrace Kill. I think you might be pleasantly surprised how he does. Plus, accepting that Leach was not hired will bring some peace and happiness to your life.

This has nothing to do about kill (I hope he succeeds) but everything to do with continually horrible leadership at the administrative level. The reason the U keeps failing at football is because they continually make bad hires. Though for once there are less excuses for bad decisions. Now the gophers have a great stadium, competitive facilities, money from the big ten network, an on and on. If he U had just a half way decent athletic director to sell this opportunity we wouldn't be 5 years away from right back where we started from. That my friends is most likely where we will be. I'm not being a Debbie downer, just expressing reality.
