Did you know this board has a St Thomas basketball forum, but no Tommies football forum?

After starting the 2025 season a disappointing 2-3 (0-2), the Tommies are on a 5-0 run, outscoring their opponents 229-53 in that stretch. Today they snapped league-leader Drake's five game winning streak, putting themselves in sole possession of second place in the FCS Pioneer Football League. Drake is now 5-1 in conference, while St Thomas is 5-2. Here's where things get interesting. The Tommies play 8-2 (4-2) Presbyterian at home next weekend, while Drake plays 6-3 (4-2) Dayton. Should the Tommies win and Drake lose to Dayton, the Tommies will be in position to receive the PFL's automatic FCS playoff berth in their first year of eligibility. Not only that, but St T has outscored their opponents 355-161 overall and 270-104 in league play.

Post Script: the Tommies are scheduled to end their regular season with a non-con game Nov 22nd against FCS #1 NDSU, currently 10-0 (7-0). Whatever else happens, NDSU is gonna flatten them. Just the same, this is all pretty good for a school that was DIII in 2020.

The tommies pounded future gophers opponent lindenwood this year

I don’t think pioneer teams or ivy teams typically play any FBS opponents

Tommies vs gophers would be fun and no risk for the gophers.
Probably would be about 35 or 42 to 3 or 7 in a game that takes about 2.5 hours.

St Thomas also lost to Lindenwood 64-0 in ‘24.

Hard to get excited about the Pioneer League.
They'll be asked to leave the Pioneer League soon enough... I just hope the school admin. has the intestinal fortitude to make their way in the MVC... every year 20-30+ Minnesota kids go west to Fargo to play D1 football. A viable 2nd D1 football school in Minnesota might be able to keep players home.

St. Thomas might concentrate on basketball and hockey, though. That shiny-new arena and all...

I wouldn’t be surprised if a Pioneer league team has never won a playoff game.

I think San Diego has won one. I might be mistaken

But that’s like saying I’d be surprised if the SOCON has ever made the sweet 16 in hoops

Why are they being asked to leave?
I have not heard that.

I wouldn't want to pay them for the game.

I wouldn't want to pay them for the game.
They probably command less than northwestern state did.

The bussing cost would be like 350 dollars

I’m not sure there is a rule but I can’t remember I pioneer team playing an FBS team so it’s probably not an option

because they were expelled from the DIII Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference...

It's kind of tongue-in-cheek. They haven't been asked to leave the Pioneer League, but if they take football seriously, St. Thomas will quickly outgrow that league. I just don't know if they have the desire to do so.

I’m not sure the expulsion was 100% due to athletics, St. Thomas seemed pretty prepared to make the jump.

Everything I’ve heard from “insiders” at st Thomas

Is that there is a plan to go scholarship football. But they have all donors on the same page that they won’t do it until basketball and hockey are where they want them

I know no insiders. But I know a couple of people who do know insiders.
Only one of these people have told me what I just posted

I think they'll have to do something facilities-wise if they want to upgrade the football program.

Yes. Which is why they’re waiting to finish all hoops and hockey they want to do. Is what I’ve heard

I'm not sure where they could build a stadium if that's something they want to do.

Shades of Bowling Green come to mind.
