Very unusual post game press conference.....especially for Fleck. If you didn't know how the game went you would have thought we lost.

One of the first times I have really seen outside noise affecting him. Does @BleedGopher or anyone know who referred to Row the Boat as corny because that definitely struck a nerve with him in this post game.

Bye week is definitely coming at a good time.

No attribution to anyone in particular out on the interweb but the statement did strike a nerve in the online sports media.

If this is a PR move someone should get a bonus as it steps back a bit from this particular game and even this season to take a full lake-side view of what the program is trying to accomplish.

Most of us think the direction we're rowing is a good thing. Defend Your Oars!

The old injury bug has bit us again for the ninth year in a row.

Just spitballing here, but is it possible there would be a reduction in injuries if guys actually wore football pants again? I mean ones with full thigh, knee, hip/tailbone pads?

Players are wearing basically bike shorts with minimal padding now. Sure, you feel faster and they look cool(?), but I'd be curious if they are adding to injury frequency.

I know below the waist hits are discouraged by rule now, but they still happen all the time in the game.

Yep. He also mentioned all the negativity for a 6-3 team, 4-2 in the BT. He alluded to something like that’s what happens when you have success. He was salty for the rare occurrence. It was a good presser to watch. I watch them all.

Reusse just had an article ripping on PJ so maybe that was it?

I wouldn't think it would be Reusse that would get under his skin considering the number of times Reusse has ripped him and the program over the years.

Something was definitely bothering him......for Fleck....especially after a win it was one of the strangest press conferences I have seen.

He mentioned that the Row The Boat may be corny to some on the TV interview right after the game ended as well. Someone irritated him.

I think the biggest clue is the start with the family/friends of the slain young man. He was clearly touched.

Which leads to the observation that PJ somewhat uniquely engages at a very personal level in public. I'm sure most HCs do the same behind the scenes but just not as publicly. Football is the vehicle for achieving much bigger goals with him. Winning certainly counts and keeps you in the job there is no doubt. But he uses his own personal tragedy as the bridge to engage others with theirs with a D1 Football Program as the means to create positive memories through some fun.

It's either somehow this week there was a specific criticism of RTB or it just came to a head after the 11 years its been with him. Regardless, it is a workable metaphor for one way to live life and yes run a football program. And yes for example, better than planting a piece of Rose Bowl turf in the Coach's office. Ski U Mah.

As he says repeatedly, RTB is not for everyone. Personally, I would rather not have one part football coach one part Tony Robbins and I was a fan for 50 years before he showed up so I think I’m OK having that opinion. I’d rather have him get upset about somebody criticizing his game plan than his slogans.

Could it have been Rossi? I have no reason to think this other than I thought the pointing after DL's touchdown was more directed to the MSU sideline than where the Gopher players were celebrating. I would need another camera angle to see the exact direction of the finger point but I wonder if it was towards Rossi who would have been inched towards the endzone calling his defense.

I don’t know if that’s it but I hope to god that’s it. Would be elite

Lots of noise with the 41-3 loss last week by those that revert back to the same after a loss.

This one is probably more worth the watch than others...

Gopher fans should probably count our blessings because we do have some...
Agreed he is taken for granted some PJ, but we have a quality head coach, who is a man of substance. It's not for show, this coach lives his "row the boat" values and culture in the community. There are some high character dudes in the program like Anthony Smith #0. That guy is going to be a great teacher, coach when his playing career is over.

Great post - thanks.

I still remember it clearly, going out to Oregon for the maiden OSU game and while I was in Portland before disembarking for the dump known as Corvallis, I met a Wolverine at a brewery and we started chatting about the upcoming season, and he said RTB, what's this garbage?

I explained the genesis of it and how Fleck uses it as a positive message for himself/the program, etc.... and the guy was moved by that and said, as long as you aren't playing Michigan, I'm a Fleck and Gopher fan.

In my experience, having been both, it's much easier to be a negative person, than to be a positive one. It's not easy to be the butt of the joke or to be mocked for what's in your heart.

Personally, I love that he is the coach and puts himself out there for more than W or Ls. Great ambassador for the program and the state.

The trick is to be extremely negative in private and publicly toxically positive

Clearly an observer or casual fan has know idea what Row The Boat means. I have no time for those people.
