Is Our D Coaching Brutally Bad At Times?

I really think it's a combo of talent at the LB spot and coaching. Sans Karmo and Williams, the majority of the starting reps given to the LB spot (Baranowski, King, Gerlach) would not be starting for 90% of P4 defenses. I'm not a star chasers but between the three, there isn't a single P4 offer on paper besides the gophers. You can have a high football IQ, but if you don't have the lateral quickness and athletic ability to stop a team like Rutgers and Purdue, there is no way in hell that you're going to compete with the upper echelon of teams. I'm a firm believer that defense wins championships and that requires recruiting at a much higher level and actually paying for a credible coordinator. I think we're fooling ourselves if any other P4 team would have had Collins as their DC this year. Until PJ finally starts advocating for higher salaries for his coordinators and recruiting at a higher level, we'll continue to see this type of turn over. I'll be the first to eat crow, if we see a totally different defense displayed tomorrow night, but I won't be holding my breathe.
Baranowski is actually the Gophers best linebacker at reading plays, being in the right gap, and tackler. He is not the quickest guy, of the lb's, but he has best instincts. The defensive tackle play isn't as good this year. They may have to rep 89, 99 and 94 more in the middle just to give adequate rest to, 16, 91 and 97. Gophers are not deep at DT. Not ideal to have to give reps to younger guys this time of year, but they may have to.

If you can't stop the run, and you can't run the ball, you have major problems.
Football, in a nutshell. These 2 things are the reasons i'm pretty low on this year's time thus far. We're 6 games in. I feel like if they could have turned it around in these areas, they would have.

I think Baranowski is the team's best LB & I don't think it's even close. The key to good LB play is good DL play and with such a weak group up front it's impossible for the LBs to look good. Other than Smith we have 0 pass rushing talent. Howard does nothing. We're not getting anything from the DT spot. We need to get creative with the rush and mix in some zone blitz....anything but sitting back and playing coverage (which always leads to a slow death).

Only WR is near as good or better this year.
We don't have any WR that is close to as good as 2024's Daniel Jackson. We do have more depth; a good group of decent WRs. No big dog, though--although LeMeke has had some pretty good games. Keep feeding him.

This didn't age well.

The defensive schemes Danny called against the huskers were awesome. So many stunts and hidden linebacker blitz's. The coaching to keep their quarterback from getting outside was unreal. Outside of the first drive he was contained all night. Really well coached by the defensive coordinator.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread it was always about the scheme. A lot of people kept harping on talent and criticizing certain positions. I’m not saying we can’t improve talent wise, but great schemes like we saw last night can mask some of those flaws. We dominated that game with players out of position and others who barely had any snaps this season. Hats off to the DC & GH heck of a job!

They did a great job of mixing things at the right times.
The biggest difference between last night and previous weeks is when we played man we didn’t give up big plays.
