Why would anyone expect a coach to be announced by now?

The regular season isn't even over yet.

Also, Dungy notwithstanding, what (good) evidence does anyone have that someone has legitimately turned down the job? I see absolutely none at this point. And don't tell me about tea-leaves.

Because Colorado and Indiana both fired later and appear to have their search done? Because 70% of the teams are done playing, so it's it's not 'likely' that the guy we want is still coaching? Basically if the guy we want isn't coaching this week-end, there's zero reason for it not to be done by now.

The assumption was that they would have made a hire of someone whose season is already over. If they announce early this week that is was a coach from this weekend's games great. If they hire someone that has been done for a week or two, questions will arise about it being their first choice or fall back plan.

Most of these coaches and agents most likely say that if you want us, hire us now or you will pay more later. We'll see if this is true or not. Sumlin is a case of this from what I've read.

There is no evidence, and the Minnesota fan base has been conditioned to assume that no news is bad news. The interpretation is that having no coach right now is all the evidence we need that everyone has turned down the job.

Maturi sucks + We have no coach + Lots of rumors from the equally clueless media = Everyone has turned us down

Rationality and patience have no place here.

Because they are, quite literally, handing the keys to their castle to relative unknowns. And I know there was some discussion about this, but all things considered, neither of those programs are in the same college coaching search universe as Minnesota right now.

If you're going after a sitting head coach (and they said they were), the odds are better than 1/3 he is coaching this weekend. Add Niumatalolo (who the U would be insane not to seriously consider) and that moves to next weekend.

Unless the next coach wants to turn things over to the Interim HC after the bowl-selections are done. Rich Rod was announced on 12/16/2007. That's 2-weeks from now.

Every comment and Thread about the Coach's search is "Idiot Wind" (Bob Dylan)

The right hire will squash any recruiting issues. Signing isn't until February.

The right hire might be able to keep the commited recruits, if you don't hire pretty soon, he won't be able to add much to the current class.

Colorado hired Mike Shanahan's tight ends coach. I don't think we should be following their lead. We've already made that mistake.

To anyone thinking that the sky is falling:

Everyone needs to relax. Everyone is throwing out rumors because no one knows anything definite. Over the past week, we've heard that Gruden was "for sure" locking up the Miami job and that about 20 people were interested, then not interested, then could be interested in the Minnesota job.

Just because Joe Sixpack in Coon Rapids doesn't know who the Gophers are going to hire doesn't mean Maturi doesn't know what he is doing. Let the decision be made or some credible information emerge before you start tearing the University administration apart.
