I understand about the 1-8 section rankings, but how are brackets determined?
The MSHSL has 6 different brackets that contain the different combinations for the 32 team playoff. The last 2 previously used ones are supposed to be ineligible for use, so there are basically 4 in play for each given year and 1 is randomly drawn. Connected people have all 6 templates and know which 2 are thrown out, so they can often make educated guesses about which ones might be used. There are of course conspiracy theories about the league “picking” the one they want to get the most desirable matchup, use your own judgment on that topic I guess.

This is a good question and I honestly don’t know the exact bracket.

There are like 5 brackets. You can’t use a bracket that’s been used the last two years.
So there are 3 options for brackets.

Each bracket has one from each section.
No team can play a team from their own section in round 1 or 2.
1 and 2 from each section can’t play each other until at least final 4.

But I don’t know which are the 3 brackets that are available this year.

Sounds complicated but sure they have a program that spits out the bracket meeting those criteria once they get the seeding done.

This year it is probably all about avoiding Maple Grove and Minnetonka as long as possible, feels very wide open after those 2.

Thou shall not question the MSHSL. Don't even get me started! lol

I didn't. It's Basically a group of media that ranks them for the Strib. It's dumb to have anything HS behind paywall. Especially a poll that you and I could probably do just as good at.

There are 5 or 6 prefabricated brackets

2 can’t be used because they were used the last two.
They random draw from the 3-4 left.

I don’t really think there are back room deals.
Pretty much draw 1, 3, or 5 if 2 and 4 aren’t available

Some smaller town papers print this same poll but all the ones i went to last year are pay walled this year

Anoka has had a crazy 0-5 start.
Lost 49-21 to #11 EP
Lost 31-20 to #7 Forest Lake
Lost 41-30 to #18 Blaine
Lost 29-25 to #18 Osseo
Lost 62-61 to # 9 Andover

Combined record or 19-6.

Thanks for doing these power rankings
That Andover game was insane; clearly they’ve given up a lot of points, week after week. Didn’t really realize it until it’s listed like this…

Week 6? Crazy 90 degrees out.

Pivotal games this week

6A
Blaine at Osseo both 3-2 with seeding on the line.
Lakeville South at Edina in a quality cross over game
Mounds View at Woodbury for seeding
East Ridge at Forest Lake

5A
Chanhassen at Chaska both 4-1
Bemidji at Alexandria for Section lead

4A
Kasson-Mantorville at Byron for top in state and #1 seed in Section 1. Both 5-0
Orono at Marshall Both #1 in their sections
5-0 Fergus Falls at 4-1 Rocori

4A/3A
4-1 St. Peter (4A) at 5-0 Albert Lea (3A)

1A
Breckenridge (5-0) at Lake Park-Audubon (4-1)

Mabel-Canton (5-0) at Spring Grove (4-1)
Hills-Beaver Creek at Edgerton both (5-0)
Cromwell-Wright Area (4-1) at Betha-Hewitt (5-0)

It sure seems like it's Maple Grove's State title to lose. They are dominant.

Byron and Kasson are 6 miles apart down there in southeast Minnesota and are absolutely killing it. How fun — 10-0 combined.

They are both picking up some talent from Rochester.

Section 6 in class A is pretty good this year. But #1Breckenridge will win this game by 3 scores minimum. Have watched both play, Breckenridge is legit with quality wins. #19LPA however had beaten some bad teams and lost to the one quality team they played in OTC.

A better game in section 6 looks like #10Parkers Prairie @ #8OTC both 4-1 And only losses came to Breckenridge, OTC already beat LPA, Parkers Prairie has a win over #11USA

To me section 6 is a 3 team race with a clear cut favorite in Breckenridge

Other Class A matchups

#7 MIB 5-0 @ #11 Barnum 4-1
#5 Cleveland 5-0 @ #21 Mayer luthren 4-1

#s are qrf rank

I’m biased toward them, but I think it’s a total coin flip with MG and Tonka. The next 3-4 teams in the hunt are also very capable.
Will be really interesting to see what happens with Maple Grove and Minnetonka play on the 15th. Those two definitely feel like they are a cut above everyone else.

But anything can happen once you get to playoffs...

The Byron team is a beast (and no I'm not from there). Hat's off to them on scheduling also. They certainly didn't take the easy path with non section games. Love to see that. They've beaten the 1st place teams in sections 3,5, and 6. Finish their regular season with current 1st place in section 4 Totino Grace. I'd say they're a significant favorite over KM tonight but in a rivalry game sometimes you never know.

Unfortunately Tonka lost their quarterback for the season. They have looked a little more one-dimensional on offense since losing him.

I’m not sure they can put up the points to keep up with MG. It will definitely be a fun one to watch though.

Would love to see an Albert Lea win tonight to set up an undefeated battle with Waseca next week in Albert Lea. That would probably be the biggest football game in Albert Lea in over 30 years. Great to see.

St. Peter lost to Waseca in week 1 by getting stopped on a 2pt. conversion late. 7-6. This will be their toughest test since that game. They haven't given up more than 7 in a game and have 2 shut outs. Albert lea also has two shut outs.

Albert Lea scores 38 a game and gives up 11
St. Peter scores 28 and gives up 4

Their expecting a big crowd for the Homecoming game tonight

The Byron team is a beast (and no I'm not from there). Hat's off to them on scheduling also. They certainly didn't take the easy path with non section games. Love to see that. They've beaten the 1st place teams in sections 3,5, and 6. Finish their regular season with current 1st place in section 4 Totino Grace. I'd say they're a significant favorite over KM tonight but in a rivalry game sometimes you never know.
They really don't have a ton of say in their schedule. They are put in a district with four area teams and then 4A and 5A schedule more competitively for cross over games.

They don’t schedule themselves but I agree it’s fun to see them play the best from around the metro

Would love to see an Albert Lea win tonight to set up an undefeated battle with Waseca next week in Albert Lea. That would probably be the biggest football game in Albert Lea in over 30 years. Great to see.
Being from down in that area, albeit it going back 35-40 years, the concept of the above might make my head explode it’s so different from what we were used to back in the day.

Great for Albert Lea. Been a few years since I've been involved with youth football in SE MN but I know they had some good guys putting some good effort into the youth program. Good to see some payoff for them.

Unfortunately Tonka lost their quarterback for the season. They have looked a little more one-dimensional on offense since losing him.

I’m not sure they can put up the points to keep up with MG. It will definitely be a fun one to watch though.
After watching Tonka last week, the one thing I will say about the one-dimensional attack is the QB is a beast & seems to almost get 4 yards just by falling forward automatically.

Add to that a pretty massive o-line & they can easily possess the ball for a long time. I think the 2nd half last week, there were only 3 EP & 2 Tonka possessions respectively....

Having seen all 3, I think Maple Grove definitely has more offensive balance & think they have the best D of the 3.
