Won assumes they sign. Historically, we've lost a couple of top recruits in the November, December, and January time frames under Fleck (not all of them have decommitted, but it's been more than occasional - a common occurrence for most teams). At this point, when we lose commits, we replace them, but with lower-rated players.

Well you can expect a post for everyone that commits. Doesn’t mean we all think he’s going to be amazing. I watched some of his high school film, seems intriguing enough to me. Would I prefer a former starting linebacker from another p4 school through the portal? Maybe, but not so easy to accomplish.

What does everyone dislike? Has great size and according to recruiting rankings is not worst ranked recruit. One site had him similar ranking to Lansu. Not a two star on any site…

Is it because lack of big time offers or lost some receiver from Utah?

Remember when Drake was a “3 star”? Probably better than who he is playing against Saturday night.

I’ve thought about the idea of a team going full on transfer mode, something like KSU used to do with juco kids being a big part of their program. I don’t think it would work as well, for one many of those juco schools were located near KSU. They could keep tabs on those kids and build relationships. Relying on the right type of players being attainable through the portal each year seems like a big ask.

I believe you should double-check your math.

Tossing out 2020, PJ has won 55 games in 7 years (including bowl games). That translates to 7.85 wins per year. Not bad at all, but not 8.5.

It's worth noting when comparing PJ's wins per year, to Kill, Kill to Brewster, Brewster to Mason, and so on, there are 25% more bowl games today than when Mason coached.

Some perspective that conflates what PJ has done:

Murray Warmath likely would have coached in 7 more bowl games than the two Rose Bowls he did coach in.

Call Stoll would have coached in 4 bowl games instead of the 1 he did.

Joe Salem would have coached in one bowl game

Gutey would have coached in 5 bowl games vs. the 2 he did.

Waker would not have coached in a bowl game.

Mason would not have coached in any additional bowl games, but coached in 4 more than he would have if he coached before the Bowl explosion.

Brewster would not have reached a bowl

Jerry Kill would have coached in 1 bowl.

Claeys would have coached in 1 bowl

Fleck would have coached in 1 bowl

The fact that it is far away from highly rated recruits is a big deal. Why do you think Brewster had trouble when he was regarded as one of the best recruiters in the nation?

By the end of the weekend I'll have a rundown of all 9800 of his comments on the low recruited athletes. I can absolutely 100% guarantee we'll find some of the shittiest takes this side of mplsgopher. He should go spend a few weeks with dpodoll so he can truly learn the arts of the DMV employer standards of fact telling.

Your post seemed to infer that we're not recruiting solid players. Nothing wrong with taking on some projects, especially at a key position. We're getting more production from Kingsbury than Roberson this season.

Cignetti certainly has a unique approach. Not a lot of schools taking as many transfers as he is. Would be curious to see the NIL budget comparison.

Yep...it is impressive how hard some work to find the negative angle to everything, seems like a miserable way to go through life but to each their own I guess.

Not every recruit is going to have an impressive offer list. But in general Fleck's recruits have tended to have significantly better offer lists then the coaches that preceded him.

You know what, thanks for a good reply. I maybe got a little salty in here, it happens.

I was just more frustrated because I loved seeing us offering and getting guys that had lots of P4/5 offers, etc. and it would get talked about and mentioned that we're recruiting at a noticeably higher level than Kill/Claeys. Then this just made me think we're going back down again.

Good point about Kingsbury. I suppose I probably should have said things better and maybe been accepting of the fact that we still might have to take a few projects each year and "hope".

So anywho, cheers to all who wrote decent replies. Sorry if I was too negative.

You should find the 9798 comments from folks who loved 83 level recruits who ended up not amounting to much.
 

Can we calm down. It's late in the cycle. 2026 kids sign in 9 weeks. This is the time of movement based on decommits, blossoming senior tape, and needs identified.

Flipping some Midwest kids from FCS or other P4's is not a bad thing.

Thread almost feels like a throwback to the days before the portal exploded when people had arguments about high school recruits, offer lists and recruiting rankings :)

Anymore, people still talk about high school recruits some but it is nothing like it used to be when it dominated the board.

PJ has a top 30 recruiting class currently with 5 4-stars. He's hardly settling for kids with G5 offers only.
 

Lots of hopes for schadenfreude from a few of you. Fleck has been here nine years, you should understand how the system works and how often we hit a double with guys many programs would consider a strikeout before considering an offer.

We don't cast a broad net for 4 and 5 star guys generally, we seek dudes who the staff deems fit for our system and culture. Until you understand that, you're going to be unhappy with recruiting rankings (and even then, our rankings aren't bad). There's a reason we have zero discipline issues off the field, send guys to the pros with regularity, etc. The staff knows what they're doing. And if you'd rather sell the soul of this program for a first round exit in the playoffs, you're short sighted and nihilistic.
