I finally like out chances of getting out of the 1st round this year.

The first domino falls! Good to see!

$17M is just an absolutely huge number. Wow. McDavid and Eichel are very, very happy campers today

especially given its for a winger. Both McDavid and Eichel should command more if they want it, though I don't necessarily expect either of them to sign for more than that given the circumstances they're at career wise and location wise

At the same time, the VGK locking up Mitch Marner for $12M/yr is looking like an incredible deal right now. Is KK97 really markedly better than Marner?

Edmonton is in a really rough spot with McDavid and that contract. His number HAS to be not just more but a few ticks more than KK97, right? So much for VGK getting Eichel for the sub-$13M number I was pretty sure they could get him at.

personally, yes, I think he's markedly better, but both can be true. That's a massive dollar increase and do think it's a great deal on Marner (I have no idea what his agent was doing signing him to that deal).

As far as McDavid, think its only specifically if McDavid wants to give Edmonton a "hometown discount". He should be comfortably the highest paid player in hockey, but he also has seemed the most "legacy" focused (versus Eichel who has already won). Eichel the only advantage is his injury history that maybe Vegas can talk him down on (plus the tax break comparatively). Will be interesting to see how long KKs number is a big outlier

Offensively, there's an argument to be made between Marner and Kaprizov, no doubt. 200-foot player? Not even close. Marner is consistently in the top 20 in Selke voting (3rd last season) while KK97, as far as I could dig back, has never been in the top 30; not like anyone thinks Defense when they are thinking about Kaprizov.

Still getting my head around $17M/year for KK97. The cap is going up a pretty decent amount over the next several years and that will help but damn that's a big number. These next two contracts are going to be really interesting.

Hopefully they can build around him and also hope their young guys develop into above average pros. I said anything over 15 per was too much. If this gets them one Cup it’s all worth it but being a Minnesota sports fan my entire life they probably don’t get out of the first round again in the next 8 years.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Kirill Kaprizov wants to play for the Minnesota Wild for his entire career and took a big step toward achieving that goal.

The 28-year-old forward signed an eight-year, $136 million contract with the Wild on Tuesday. It has an average annual value of $17 million and begins with the 2026-27 season.

Kaprizov could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season. He had been eligible to sign an eight-year contract with Minnesota since July 1.

"It's long, so many years, and I'm not too young and it's probably like maybe my last contract in hockey," Kaprizov said. "I don't know. We'll see, but it's great. Sometimes you watch guys, like say (Sidney) Crosby or (Alex) Ovechkin or whatever, guys stay with same team whole career and it's pretty fun, don't change so many teams and just play for one team. And especially when I came here, Minnesota has always helped me so much whenever, like outside of hockey, in life and hockey.

"I'm just happy to keep doing what we do and just winning here. I hope for sure. I believe one day (the Stanley Cup) is coming."

Righteous bucks!

Random additional thought on the dollar amount. Think the additional thing against the wild is, KK is not exactly nationally marketable. Mcdavid is mcjesus and makes crazy dollars in ads. Ditto Makar, MacKinnon, and insert basically all the other big name us and Canadian players. There’s probably more push to “get his” for a guy with more limited ad revenue

They’ll still have cash to splash next year (22 mil projected) but I’d imagine the market is going to encourage bidding wars for any big names that get there if they’re not resigned until salaries from floor to ceiling catch up and settle out (part of why this rapid a cap jump is going to get really weird on both sides contract wise)
