Fleck: “We were 1-0 in the bye week. We used it perfectly. Whether that’s fundamentals, details, techniques, reflection, self-scouting..."

I think it will be a LOT more important for Wisconsin to win their bye weeks because, well, you know, that might be the only ones left on their schedule.

As for this Fleck comment, it is the kind of stuff that makes me roll my eyes as it relates to the much of the worthless stuff that he says.

Guys with seemingly minor injuries end up out for multiple games while he declares they are in great shape.

He'll tell the Big Ten Network that he has the most connected team he has ever been around and the Gophers will have a 5 win regular season.

It is the sugary non substance comments that get to me.

Not so much that I don't like Fleck. I do. I'm glad he is the Gopher coach. I just grow weary of the sugary meaningless stuff that pours out of his mouth.
Fleck seems to enjoy talking to the media more then a lot of coaches and he is definitely higher on the slogans/cliche list then a lot of guys......but in the end every coach is basically giving the same speeches to the media on a weekly basis and most are just filler where there might be a nugget or 2 for the writers to latch onto.

I don't mind Fleck's style but I know it rubs some people the wrong way. The reverse was true when Kill was here, some people loved his down home country boy schtick, I found it hollow and fake.

Perhaps it's more succinct than "We had a very focused bye week. We watched film, we practiced fundamentals we..."

Exactly. And if Fleck had stated it in that way, they'd be complaining about him speaking in cliches.
PJ is rarely succinct when it comes to praising the program, so I don't think that's it. In this case he followed up the 1-0 comment with “We used it perfectly. Whether that’s fundamentals, details, techniques, reflection, self-scouting and working Minnesota on Minnesota.” If he was trying to be brief or avoiding coach-speak, he wouldn't have needed to add that.

Fair. If not anything else, he is consistent. Whether we like it or not. Most all he says has a targeted audience. Although we fans received the message, it may not have been for us. Again, just my humble opinion. The 1-0 thing is more geared toward the programs culture. Perhaps another way of putting it is focus on this game and this game only. Do that every week and the rest will take care of itself.

Just uninformed speculation.

Could you imagine if he said we were 0-1 in the bye week? Mix it up. Throw the media a curve ball. They would never see it coming.

That makes me think back to ESPN when they were good and "the Rick" commercials. He said he likes to bunt during a home run derby just to mix it up a bit.

That would really tank our FPI on ESPN

Could be worse, a lot of Wisconsin Badger fans are saying with Luke Fickel still coaching, the Badgers are likely to go 0-1 in the bye week.

You can't say this after a loss.

Positivity is great, and I am a fleck guy, but this is certified 🌽

Sweet. 3-1 now. 1-0 in the B1G. That's right, this was a conference bye week.

Not so fast! Fleck said it was Minnesota against Minnesota. So really they went 1-1 during bye week.

I wonder I which Minnesota squad won!

Can’t believe I’m posting this nonsense but just joining in…….
So... Are you putting on a Goldy's head or a knight this Saturday? ;)

You can't? Sure you can.

He's pleased with how the team responded to a disappointing loss, and he's happy with the way in which they are preparing for the upcoming game.

This really isn't all that controversial, is it?

It shouldn't be but some fans find ways to get bent out of shape over press conference comments....I have never really understood it but it happens all the time.

Same people who would only be satisfied if Bud Grant was summoned from beyond to lead the team

I wish I had the confidence for a Gopher W like the media have. I feel this game is 100% a tossup

Ask me after the game!
I'm not 100% sure what to think. I think we'll win, but it feels like a 1 possession game. Seeing we are at home, that is basically a tossup.

I don't know if this counts as the "oily sloganeering" that PJ has been accused of but it is the type of corporate motivational speaker type speak that really does him no favors, especially if the team falls on its face against New Jersey this week.

More then anything, it's a product of the non-stop, around the clock media appetite. Maybe there should be Monday or Tuesday JV games to fill the vaccum.

100% – – but I think it’s also OK if folks get a little tired of his schtick from time to time it is a bit much.
He is who he is and isn't going to change. I just think if people are tired of it, then just don't listen to him.

I don't think anyone did. They read the quote on here and shared their opinion of it.

However you choose to consume the coach's quotes — whether it's by reading, listening or watching — I think it's worth considering the possibility of ignoring it if it's going to tire or annoy or trigger you.

To me, all coaches sound remarkably similar. They all have slogans, they all use coach speak.
