Winning the bye week

Fleck has a goal of being 1-0 during every week of the season, which is his way of trying to keep the focus on the task at hand. He even assigns a win or a loss to bye weeks based on how the team practiced.

“We were 1-0 in the bye week,” Fleck said. “We used it perfectly. Whether that’s fundamentals, details, techniques, reflection, self-scouting and working Minnesota on Minnesota.”

Those of the cynical nature might argue that since Cal lost 34-0 at San Diego State last weekend, the Gophers took another L of sorts. Fleck’s point, though, was about response, and he believes he has received it.

“You have to handle that defeat, and you have to respond the right way,” he said. “In three games, they’ve handled a lot of things that came their way. You’ve got to put all that together, you apply it in the bye week, and you get better in the bye week.”

Go Gophers!!

I love PJ and I am glad he's our coach, but damn stuff like this makes me cringe.
I'm not really sure it is "for you" or me .. or such. He's selling it to the team.

He can get down on the team publicly I suppose .... but I don't think that helps and would undermine any positive comments he makes to the team.

I remember when Horton took over after Brewster, he decided practices should just be fun. Horton brought home the pig too.

I'm 1-0 in Pledge Week.

Thank you, sir! May I have another?

We won! I know the grumps out there are going to nitpick this victory, but a win is a win.

I like how some of y'all still get upset when he's been saying this forever. Do and say whatever the fuck you need to to get the fellas ready to rock. The real push starts now

Cal 0
San Diego State 34

Doesn't look like a bye week victory to me. Looks like Cal beat us on the field in week 3 and went out of their way to make sure we know we had no business losing to them in the first place in week 4.

The win was so difficult for them, they couldn’t recover…maybe.

I think it will be a LOT more important for Wisconsin to win their bye weeks because, well, you know, that might be the only ones left on their schedule.

As for this Fleck comment, it is the kind of stuff that makes me roll my eyes as it relates to the much of the worthless stuff that he says.

Guys with seemingly minor injuries end up out for multiple games while he declares they are in great shape.

He'll tell the Big Ten Network that he has the most connected team he has ever been around and the Gophers will have a 5 win regular season.

It is the sugary non substance comments that get to me.

Not so much that I don't like Fleck. I do. I'm glad he is the Gopher coach. I just grow weary of the sugary meaningless stuff that pours out of his mouth.

No one is upset, I said it made me cringe. Others are mocking the absurdity of the statement. If you want to believe that telling a group of adults that they were 1-0 in the bye week is going to inspire the team, that's fine. I don't believe it for a second, and I think it makes him look silly, but I don't care if you think it's inspiring.

I have a feeling this is a sentiment shared by many here, myself included.
