2025 Minnesota High School Football Thread

Big game this Friday night impacting 6A rankings: EP @ Minnetonka. Minnetonka's Homecoming game. Expected huge crowd. Minnetonka's RB is impressive and showed his talent last year in the EP game as QB. EP has a trio of RB's that get playing time and use ground game to win. How do you Gopherholers feel about this game?

I watched the Minnetonka/PL game Friday. Minnetonka's QB left in the first half with an injury and didn't return. They switched to Francois at QB and ran the read option the entire second half (first half too I think). I'm pretty sure they didn't throw a pass the entire game, and Francois and the RB were the only two to touch the ball in the second half. I haven't seen them play before so not sure if they are always so extremely one dimensional (Had heavy rain in second half).

Game went to OT last year and EP is better this year. EP won. Should be a really good game.

I think right now it's
Maple Grove
Minnetonka
Eden Prairie
Forest Lake

Forest Lake is tough but competition is tough to measure.

North Section is wide open

1758549958554.png
Rogers beat Blaine
Andover beat Centennial
Centennial beat Champlin Park
Champlin Park beat Andover
Osseo beat Rogers

Going further
Centennial beat Rosemount
Rosemount beat Shakopee

This week (These are 3-1/4-0 matchups)

Maple Grove travels to Moorhead (Not sure if Moorhead QB is back)
Champlin Park at Blaine
Rosemount at Farmington
Osseo at Shakopee
Eden Prairie at Minnetonka

Undefeated Teams through 4 weeks.
6A
Maple Grove
Minnetonka
Forest Lake

5A
Chaska
St. Thomas Academy
Mahtomedi (Plays Kennedy today should move to 4-0)
Spring Lake Park

4A
Byron
Kasson-Manterville
Marshall
South St. Paul
North Branch
Hermantown
Fergus Falls

3A has 11 teams
2A has 8 teams
1A has 9 teams
9P has 10 teams

3-0 for first time since 1989 and now 4-0. Out scoring opponents 40-8 per game. Great for the program and kids.
They have played the bottom dwellers so far. The upcoming opponents have a combined record of 11-4 including undefeated Waseca and one loss St Peter. Winning three of the remaining schedule would really make me proud.

Go Tigers!

Injury to current Minnetonka QB, with last year's QB (this year's RB) taking over with read option focus is big. EP has defended reasonably well against read option. EP defense weakness this year is CB play in cover 2 and allowing the deep play when playing one safety. Should be a great game. If EP plays keep away with "Ground Grant" rushing offensive gameplan and doesn't allow Minnetonka to go on long drives it could get interesting.

I will never stop thinking that this looks stupid. 1758569595324.png

Why can't they just call it division A, B, C, D etc. Why does everything have to have an A?

Lower divisions would probably get offended by having a C or D next to their division when the big Schools get an A. :)

Current 6A Computer Ranking

Very curious to see Farmington on Friday because their ranking doesn't track with their game results.

Gave up 28 to a bad Eastview Team
Barely got by a down Lakeville North team 7-3
Beat 2-2 White Bear Lake
Lost by 29 against Lakeville South.

I must be missing something because I don't get why they would be ahead of EP for sure and I am sure there are others as well.

Is tonka QB going to play?

It’s computer ranking and margin of victory isn’t a factor

So EP beating 0-4 Anoka vs farmington beating 1-3 Eastview
Farmington beating 1-3 north vs EP beating 1-3 STMA
Farmington beating 2-2 white bear lake vs EP beating 2-2 Edina

Eden prairie lost to 4-0 maple grove
Farmington lost to 3-1 south
But it’s more a who you beat ranking than a who you lost to ranking.

Literally Eastview beating Roseville is why farmington is higher ranked than EP.

Computer rankings are pretty dumb.

I do think people are dwelling too much on the Eastview score.
They didn’t scrimmage and were missing a division 2 safety that game (UMD commit).
In the Lakeville south game they ended with the same amount of rushing yards as LS. It was special teams and turnovers that killed them. If they played again I would expect more like a 14-7 kind of score in favor of south. South had like 225 yards and 50 of it was a garbage time run near the end. (Granted a bunch of farmingtons yards was a garbage touchdown too)

Nice breakdown on the computer rankings - definitely shows the flaw in them because EP should definitely be ranked higher than Farmington right now.

As for the Farmington/Eastview result.....I don't know man....my son goes to Eastview (not a football player) and I was really hoping after their game with Farmington there were going to be signs that the team was on the right track.

But then Rosemount just routed them from the beginning, it felt like our game against Northwestern State at times.

Guess we will see what happens on Friday.

EP is a top 5 team IMO this year. But 3-12 is probably pretty wide open. We will know a lot about EP after Friday.

Still some out of balance records due to scheduling balance and there being about 16 good teams and 16 bad teams.

Blaine is 3-1 and their opponents are a combined 2-14. There remaining opponents are 12-4.
Forest Lake is 4-0 and their opponents are 3-13. Their remaining schedule is 8-8.
Centennial is 3-1 and opponents are 12-4. Remaining schedule is 4-12

Same reason we have district names like:
Mid Northwest Central
Mid Northwest Gold
Mid Northwest North Central
Mid Northwest North
Mid Northwest Red
Mid Northwest Valley Plains West
Mid West Central Black
Mid West Central Blue
Mid West Central Copper
Mid West Central White

There is no way anyone actually knows what district they are in... I would love to quiz the head coaches of every team in these districts and see how many know what district they are in.

Those are the district and conference names, I'm convinced a t-shirt maker came up with these names that charges per word. Nobody knows or cares what conference they are in anymore nor do they have any rivals because of the re-districting all the time

Does anyone know Who’s in the Tri Metro? Used to be Centennial, Farmington, Mahtomedi, Cannon Falls, St Anthony, Blake and Minnehaha.

1987😎

Brooklyn Center was also in there. Only two left, St. Anthony and Brooklyn Center. Brooklyn Center was dang good at most sports then.

Centennial went to the North Suburban in 1990 I I believe.
I remember playing against Centennial in the north suburban. Back when it was mostly people from Lexington and Circle Pines.

Well if you watch the Eastview farmington game it’s all long runs from number 11. Pursuit angles off on the back end.
UMD recruit comes back and they hold north to 3. Hold white bear to 6. Hold Lakeville south under 200 rushing.

Hard for me to say a team playing backups week 1 after no scrimmage giving up 28 means they suck for all time.
Like if that game wasn’t a fluke how do you explain Eastview Eagan being 28-14 but Lakeville north beating Eagan 17-0. Through the transitive property Eagan should’ve destroyed north. North only score 3 on crappy farmington!

As for the computer rankings, QRF was kind of developed to rank teams that didn’t play each other or common opponents.
In a closed loop it’s kind of pointless.

Clearly you are really close to the Farmington program so please don't take my comments as a shot at Farmington. Not saying they suck just pointing out that their resume didn't really seem to match up with their ranking is all.

Not close at farmington but I do have access and watch all the south metro games in 6a.

Their resume is exactly why their computer rank was high.
They’re 3-1. They’ve beaten teams that are a combined 4-8. They lost to a team that’s 3-1.

Whereas Eden prairie is 3-1. They’ve beaten teams that are a combined 3-9

As for the non computer rankings..
Farmington was rated the lowest of all the unbeatens and was the only unbeaten rated behind teams with losses. Seems pretty reasonable. New ones haven’t come out. I’m guessing they won’t be ranked.

There are 15 teams with 3 wins in 6a.
There are 4 2-2 teams.
So anyone with 3 wins is going to be 19th at worst right now.
People bashing north in this thread. North is probably a top 20 team
I’d pick them over Woodbury, white bear lake, Osseo, Moorhead with Moorhead’s backup QB (I also watched Moorhead wayzata game)

Eden prairie is one of a handful that I would say could beat those top 2 on a given night
Should be a close one like last year. Both teams are capable of running the ball for long sustained drives, they pass when they have to, but only to keep the defense honest. Last year I recall lots of 3 yard runs and 4th down conversions. Just smash mouth ball.

Especially if Tonka RB is playing QB with the other QB out

The running back is Caleb Francois (Iowa State Commit) and was the QB for last year’s state runner up team. He’s definitely not a stranger to the position, but it makes the team a little more 1-dimensional as Francois was also the leading receiver coming into this week.

Yeah he’s really good.
