Alot of gopher fans think Wisconsins season is over im not sure we are in any better shape we got beat by a cal team that hasn't put a single point on the board in the first half against san diego state 😬 and they put a lid on cals QB that we couldn't

Gophers lost that game much more than Cal won it. We have a bye week to reflect on what went wrong and grow, just as we did last year after the UNC+Iowa losses in 2024 or the Bowling Green loss in 2021. The alarm bells sound in here after loss #1 of every season, we will be okay.

San Diego State had 4 sacks and a fumble recovery.
Cal rushed 31 times for 65 yards....2.1 avg

San Diego State lost to Washington St 36 to 13 in their previous game.
In a home game Washington St lost to Washington 59 to 24 this week They lost to North Texas 59 to 10 the previous week. My point: by scores San Diego St is not a football juggernaut losing big to Washington St..

Cal punted 6 times and missed a field goal.
I didn't see the game...my guess is San Diego St put more pressure on the quarterback than we did.
Game was away at San Diego St. Cal's 2nd road game of the season. Opened the season with a convincing road win at Oregon St 34 to 15.

If the gophers make big time mistakes like they did the cal game they’ll struggle to win the games not called northwestern and Wisconsin

Gophers will have a better record.

Wisconsin might lose out. Gophers will be several games.

Is it possible SDSU learned a lot from our film and focused on doing things that worked for us, but we (inexcusably) decided not to do a lot?

Like rushing the QB?

Is it possible Cal was dealing with injuries?

Week to week can have very little correlation

I agree that we beat ourselves, but thats not comforting to me.
Once is an anomaly
I am not worried about the problems of Cal until they repeat themselves

But beating yourself can become your identity if you do it a couple of times early in the season

Above someone said SDSU had 4 sacks. Hmmm ... wonder if they, you know, rushed the QB and put a lot of pressure on him??

What a concept!
And if you aren’t going to pressure not sure why you’re running so much man to man

The Gophers had 3 sacks against Cal
A big problem was they were getting the ball out fast. Hard to pressure regardless of how many you rush when the ball comes out that fast.
My bigger issue was how much man we played considering we were not playing it that well.

We scored 14 points, the fact that we didn’t pressure the qb the entire game is down the list for why we lost.

Match ups. Comparing scores is something I love to do but it really comes down to match ups.

Cal won 34-15 at Oregon State.
Oregon at home, beat Oregon State 41-6.

That just says both are better than Oregon Stste.

Sure I don’t feel great about our squad when comping scores, but do people think we would lose 34-0 to San Diego State?

Our season is going to be a roller coaster of 1-0 or 0-1 seasons based on match-ups and how well we play.

At one during the broadcast they put up Cal's QB numbers for plays he wasn't pressured and the few times we blitzed/pressured him. The number of pressures was low. But so was his completion percentage and yardage. We could have blitzed more, but we also could have protected Drake better and not shit the bed on special teams, just not as easily as making a true freshman QB uncomfortable.

Cal averaged 1.5 yardspc rushing in first half. Then the QB threw two pics in the second half.
