I was listening to a podcast recently and they mentioned how impressed they were by this statement by Dan Lanning. I am not posting this to get a political discussion started and I hope I don't regret posting this at all. There are other threads for political discussion so please take your politics there. I'm just impressed by Dan Lanning here. PJ was equally impressive when he spoke about the recent tragedy here in MN.

The best part is at ~3:00 mark about respecting each others differences of opinion. I will say that I've been pleasantly surprised lately that the discussion on Gopherhole seems to be more respectful lately. I'm not sure what has changed, but I like it.

I'll pass. The first time I ever listened to Dan Lanning was also my last.

The way this has been forced into the sports world has been really weird. Can’t say I care about what a football coach thinks of the current state of the country.
I only care when they say something positive and it gives me the impression they are setting a good example for impressionable young men. The more reminders we can have to be nice to each other, including on this message board, the better. How you spend your time is totally up to you. ;)

As a forum policy I'm fine with it.

However, I find the general concept of "no politics" to be used by folks who want to declare things they don't want to hear "that's politics" and their opinion magically is exempt.

That's a cynical take. I don't think what Dan Lanning said was political. He was just being kind. Both sides can do that. And in my case, I was just trying to keep things friendly. So far it seems to have worked.

80% of people don't care about celebrities political opinions.

The other 20% only care if the celebrities opinions is the same as theirs.

I didn't say anything about what Dan said.

This is the only quote I could quickly find that said what I wanted to say. Unfortunately, it turns out Neera Tanden is a political consultant. Hahahaha!
That kinda hits what I was talking about.

The idea of what is "politics" very much depends on what you say and how you say it... and not everyone will agree.

Best example was that I was once a member of a small online community, basically a group of personal blogs posting about daily life, sometimes serious, sometimes fun. All good fun.

Eventually the "no politics" rule came down, everyone was cool with it, nobody wanted straight up political rambling anyway.

A little while later one user bemoaned the fact that the state they lived in voted to ban gay marriage, something that impacted them very personally. But when they talked about it some other users decided "that's politics" and should not be posted at all. But to that user it made no sense, to them their legal rights are very relevant to posts about their life. It's not some artificial thing they brought into the conversation, it's relevant to blog posts that are personal.

Just depends on your point of reference.

Vantage Point in real-life?

Well, you sucked me in. I wanted to just let this post die. Ha! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I get where you're coming from. It can be hard to differentiate for sure. Even Google's AI had difficulty, but it made a distinction (see below). Of course, some people would just say that's the AI's opinion which is funny to think about in itself. I like to differentiate morals from politics. I like to say my morals are Christian and Jesus didn't have a party. He was talking to everyone. To some, that is a very political and divisive statement including some Christians! I'd say to them just as Dan Lanning said to people he disagreed with, "I love you anyway". I think that's a very good moral thing to say regardless of your politics or religion and that was my point. Obviously, some people disagree. That's cool. I do NOT have all the answers, just a bunch of opinions some better than others.

And let me apologize to posters in advance that I now brought up religion, another no-no on sites like this which I agree with. Now, hopefully, this post doesn't devolve into some insulting melee and just dies off so we can talk GOPHER FOOTBALL!

Thanks for the interesting, respectful, back and forth. I did learn something from your thoughts. I'm going to stop now or someone is going to tell us to get a room!

FWIW I see posts all the time on here that veer into politics, it's just whether or not folks read through the lines or not. Rarely does anyone outright reference a political party or leader, rather they will make comments that are clearly adjacent to certain ideologies. 8/10 it seems to lean a very specific way on here, but maybe Ground News would tell me I have a blind spot, lol.

Yeah it is weird how they come up.

Dude A: "Man that was a great pass...."

Dude B: -out of nowhere tossing out talking points riffing off the word "pass"-

I worry about those folks ...

I’m all about civility. But let me just say that I am right, and anyone who disagrees with me is an idiot, or evil. And, if you don’t agree that they are idiotic or evil, then you are too!
