All Things 2025 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread

I didn’t think about that. You are right. The time penalty has to be able to be refused.

I guess a half can't end on an accepted penalty (untimed down). However, any team that is trailing would want the 10 seconds to remain at the end of the game, or either team at the end of the half.

Well shit. I didn't realize that both Okudah and Gink were in concussion protocol, and we figured Cashman would miss time. Hopefully none are very serious. Dallas Turner will get his snaps in place of Gink, let's hope the young man steps up. Still hard to believe Turner is only 22 years old. Lots to learn for him and plenty of time to do it.

I suspected this was part of the issue with the struggles of the offense earlier in the game. I would have bet money on it. This from Alec Lewis at The Athletic:

"Some of the trouble with the play clock was a byproduct of lengthier play calls to counteract the Bears’ third-down structures, O’Connell said. It’s not that Minnesota was drawing up pass concepts on the sideline in the dirt. It’s more that Chicago defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was introducing coverage principles he hadn’t in the past, and as a result, the Vikings needed to tweak their play-call language on the fly.

Halftime adjustments, and the rest is history. If Darrisaw is back and 100% this week, I think the offense looks a lot better than last Monday night.

Not sure when Van Ginkel got hurt but Okudah was concussed on the "pitchie pitche woo woo" last play of the game. And it was bad enough that the carted him off, so I seriously doubt he plays this week. Sucks.

The Redskins will be under .500 this year. Book it!
They were surprisingly unimpressive. Or perhaps GB is really good. 😐

There were quite a few "experts" that predicted the Packers would win the North and make the Superbowl.

From winning his first NFL game on Monday to being named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday to becoming a new Dad on Friday.

That's quite a week for JJM. Good luck with the diapers and finding enough time to sleep, young man.

The experts pick to flop this year was the Redskins.

They won a ton of games last year with luck. That Chicago bear tip game being one of them.

Kevin O’Connell Provides Several Vikings Injury Updates

Winning is always great in the NFL, but the Vikings will have some issues to fix moving forward. For much of the first three quarters, their offense was anemic, and while they did enough to win late in the game, the team is going to need to put together more complete performances in the future if they want to win.

Doing so is going to be easier said than done, especially with injury concerns beginning to mount for Minnesota. Speaking on Wednesday, O’Connell revealed that both linebacker Blake Cashman and running back Ty Chandler have picked up injuries that will force them to miss time, dealing the team an immediate blow in Week 2.

They aren’t the only guys who could miss time, though. O’Connell also shared that linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and cornerback Jeff Okudah are in the concussion protocol, meaning they will have to clear that in order to play on Sunday. Doing so on a short week is going to be tough, and they both could also end up missing the Vikings’ next game.

“Blake Cashman and Ty Chander … it looks like both of them will miss some time,” O’Connell said when speaking to reporters. “We’re still working through what that looks like roster-wise, but I do plan on both of them returning, but I don’t have a real timetable as far as what that looks like from a standpoint of the next few weeks.”

“Jeff Okudah and Andrew Van Ginkel did come out of the game and have been placed in the concussion protocol, so that will be something to monitor, clearly, on a short week. They’re both doing well, but they are indeed in the protocol.”

Kevin O’Connell, Vikings Could Be Shorthanded in Week 2

Of these four guys, losing Cashman and Van Ginkel would deal the Vikings’ linebacker corps a significant blow, as both guys started in Week 1. Van Ginkel, in particular, blossomed into a star for Minnesota last year, earning a Pro Bowl selection and a spot on the All-Pro Second Team for the first time in his career. Chandler and Okudah are depth options for Minnesota, but being without both of them will also place O’Connell in a bind.

There’s a chance that Okudah and Van Ginkel could play in Week 2, but there’s no timeline for when either of them will escape the concussion protocol. As for Cashman and Chandler, they are set to miss some time, with some more clarity on their injury statuses being expected in the near future. Minnesota will return to the field for practice on Thursday as it prepares for its upcoming matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football.

Dallas Turner is the obvious replacement for Van Ginkel and I believe I read McGlothern is expected to step in for Okudah if Okudah is out. I think Eric Wilson can fill in sufficiently for Cashman and I'm sure Kobe King may see some more snaps as well.

Darrisaw returning will be huge, Skule struggled last Monday night. I expect the Vikings to run the shit out of the ball against Atlanta, I like props for rushing for both Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason.

Lotta money on Atlanta betting this game, and I'm just not sure I see it. Atlanta is a +3.5 underdog and one of the pros I listen to, he says his model should have the Vikings favored by 6. Weird game, nothing about Atlanta impresses me

I love stats like these. I think the Vikings got a good one here, and the marriage between KOC and JJ McCarthy I really believe is going to be a great one

Per this article on Heavy, JJ is not eligible for Offensive ROY, but Comeback POY, per Florio -

It was a night of firsts for not only Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, but also the NFL.

Mounting an 11-point, fourth-quarter comeback in a 27-24 win over the Chicago Bears, in his first start on Monday night, McCarthy made history in many ways.

He became the first player to score three fourth-quarter touchdowns in their NFL debut. He became the first quarterback since Steve Young in 1985 to lead a comeback of 10 or more points in their first game, and the only quarterback since 1950 to do so on the road. He also joins Fran Tarkenton as the only Vikings rookie to throw two touchdowns and rush for a touchdown in their NFL debut. The last quarterback do that across the league was Cam Newton in 2011.

All are stellar feats that have thrust McCarthy into the center of the daily sports show circuit. How far he can go in his first year will be one of the biggest storylines of the season, which makes him subject to many awards.

On Monday night, McCarthy wore a special patch that read “NFL Premiere 2025” on his jersey, suggesting that he may be eligible for the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award with many other first-time starters donning the same patch in Week 1.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio was the bearer of bad news to McCarthy loyalists, clearing the air of confusion that the patch created.

“Based on his performance, some have asked whether McCarthy is eligible for the offensive rookie of the year award,” Florio wrote. “He is not. We’ve previously confirmed that McCarthy is not eligible for the prize. The ‘premiere’ patch, however, creates confusion.”

The NBA’s rules regarding rookie of the year run counterintuitively to the NFL, which also left some fans considering whether McCarthy would be eligible.

Vikings QB JJ McCarthy Primed to Win NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award

While McCarthy’s chances of winning Offensive Rookie of the Year were squashed by his missing his entire first season with a meniscus injury, it does open the door for another award — Comeback Player of the Year.

Following McCarthy’s fourth-quarter heroics that won him NFC Offensive Player of the Week, ESPN polled NFL executives for end-of-season award predictions — and McCarthy was the consensus Comeback Player of the Year by those polled.

“The Vikings are a playoff contender and believe they can build a Super Bowl-caliber roster with a starting quarterback under the low-cost rookie wage scale. McCarthy also benefits from sitting and watching behind the scenes for a year because of his season-ending knee injury suffered in the 2024 preseason,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote. “McCarthy already was the pick before Monday night’s win over Chicago, but his three-touchdown second half (two passing, one rushing) to erase an 11-point deficit punctuated his case.”

Comeback Player of the Year Odds Take Strange Turn After McCarthy’s Performance

Throughout the offseason, McCarthy was hovering around the fifth-best odds to win the Comeback Player of the Year award.

That remains unchanged after Week 1, but his odds took a surprising turn despite his performance on Monday Night Football.

In August, McCarthy had +775 odds to win the award, fifth behind Aidan Hutchinson(+285), Dak Prescott (+288) Christian McCaffrey (+300) and Trevor Lawrence (+500), according to BetMGM.

On Tuesday, BetMGM updated its odds, and McCarthy is even more of a long shot at +1200. No player saw a significant change to their odds besides McCaffrey, who emerged as a favorite with +185 odds this week.

McCarthy’s performance for the first three quarters may have scared off some betters. There is also a hedge toward McCaffrey, considering the San Francisco 49ers will be leaning on him immensely with Brock Purdy and George Kittle expected to miss the next several games.

I saw that in early August, and I took JJ McCarthy for Comeback POY at 9-to-1 (+900) odds on August 8th. I also took Trevor Lawrence at +500. What the heck, I thought it was worth a shot

this is slightly the part that i'm still in wait and see mode. JJM was clear deer in headlights almost throughout the game (he's still slow delivering the ball, but he got to the right read eventually), but the biggest difference was their offense kept getting bounced off the field and our OL figured it out and protected JJM vastly better in the 4th while opening up some gaping running lanes.

We were definitely aided by the bears for some idiotic reason trying to just run the ball continually (20 carries for 61 yards by not Caleb Williams), them taking 127 yards in penalties and Williams getting real erratic as we dialed up pressure.

Again always better to be learning after a win, especially one you throw a brutal pick 6 in (and LOVED how KOC coached him after that with the no nonsense of "you have to know that" but didn't rag on it for an extended period). JJM is getting all the headlines, which you love for his confidence, but my additional "gameballs" would go to the interior DL, Eric Wilson, and Jordan Mason (dayum he provided a spark that got them going hammering through defenders). JJMs QBR despite the 4th Qtr was still only 52.6, but lots of reasons to be the most optimistic we've been about a QB we've drafted since... Daunte or Fran?

I'm not as down on Johnson as a play caller as you after week 1. Williams missed a bunch of freebies. The OL part will be the biggest thing though. They're not built to be able to road grade you like the lions could, which built all of their hard PA game that killed you. Think they will have to be throw to set up the run like they did on drive 1. Still pretty clear the Bears should be the worst team in the NFC North again.
Bold: agreed!

Was incredible to see how well he played to then go to how poorly he played.

That one play where Van Gink would've walked in with a pick six .... only reason it wasn't was because it was such a S throw

Caleb will be the gift that keeps on giving for NFC North teams. He'll never be an elite QB but just good enough to keep the Bears from moving on.

I get a chuckle knowing CHI passed on Jayden Daniels partially based on the media hype around Williams. I'm not even sure if CHI brought Daniels in for a pre draft interview and workout.
They moved on from Fields. But we still have a year or two after this of CW
