Minnesota Golden Gophers freshmen participation tracker after week one versus Buffalo

Fascinating karmo the only one and yes he’ll play all year. If martino gets healthy I guess he plays

Might as well just burn Karmos RS now. I think Parrish plays this weekend as they try and spool up some other CB options.

It’s nice to be in a spot that we don’t have to play other t-FR. I don’t think Martino plays this year but I’d like to be wrong. I’d take fliers on the specialists and Stubbs getting snaps though.

Usually I'm in favor of red-shirting the freshmen, but the additional athleticism/depth of Karmo at Linebacker is nice.

Redshirts aren't "burned" until a player graduates or leaves school. They can be used any year.

This should be an excellent week to play the freshmen extensively, and any 2nd or 3rd string.

I think we're deep enough at WR. Aside from Karmo, I can maybe see us using the DL if our depth becomes an issue due to the injuries

True, but it used to be rare to use a red shirt after the freshman year. I don’t know if it’s changed much, but a player transferring with a red shirt in their pocket may open up more opportunities.

Honestly, in the transfer portal era, the concept of redshirtming means very little. You can't project your roster more than a year or two out so a guy having 4 or 5 years of eligibility isn't really important to the team they sign with out of high school.

Redshirting used to be something important when there was more year to year roster stability. As it is now, if a kid is ready to play out of high school you play him. No reason to try and save him for a mythical 5th year you probably won't see anyway.

To your point though I am guessing it is still pretty rare for a guy to take a non-medical redshirt year anytime other than their first year out of high school. You certainly can but I don't think it happens all that often.

Just spitballing here…Karmo just looked super explosive, you think the staff would consider standing him up to rush the passer? I can see that athleticism like a Micah Parsons or Abdul Carter. Not saying he’s anything like them because he’s much smaller still yet but speed wise I wonder if they would consider that. I could see him easily blowing by tackles.

Karmo is listed at 225....he runs and looks about 195....when he puts on 15 good pounds he's gonna be a beast!!!

I’m not sure what his future is position wise, but I’m pleased the staff see’s his talent and puts him on the field. Sometimes colleges will ruin a talented player trying to make him gain size fast to fit in a positional “box”. In my opinion that’s what happened with the Rosemount Ratzlaff kid at Wisconsin. They were dead set on putting weight on him to play linebacker and his body didn’t agree with it. I’m really excited for Karmo’s future, like you said he’s explosive, and plays much bigger than his size.

Not at all trying to derail the thread, but just FYI there is an either active or upcoming lawsuit against the NCAA by a couple players ... to essentially force the rules to be updated to just give everyone all five years to fully compete. You still have the same five year clock, but it gets rid of redshirts. You can play all five years, if you want.

I can't see how it doesn't pass.

Sure, you maybe don't want to risk it ..... but I really think Karmo has to play all year. Doesn't he?

Go Gophers!!
Like the fact that we only played one true freshman in Week One. Karmo deserved to play and would likely not be here for Year Five so I'm glad he got his chance. Generally would love to see the vast majority of these guys not play more than 4 games this year to preserve eligibility...BUT times have changed and the chances of any/many of these guys staying at The U for five years is really low. If any/some/all of them can help us this year I hope they play, even if it means one less year of eligibility

Times have changed, high school athletes are better developed, and the redshirt rule seems outdated.
