I 100% get why conferences would not want to do this, why would you eliminate 1 of your 2 best shots at the playoffs outright?

tOSU's AD just proposed just that, make the conference championship games a playoff game.

I actually kinda like this as it's one of the few suggestions that does NOT dilute the conference championship games ... it actually makes conference championship games even more meaningful.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t get this plan. Why would a conference put their top teams against each other in the first round of the playoffs when the loser goes home?

It’s better to have both teams in a regular playoff where they’ll most likely be placed against teams from other conferences, and not against each other.

Ohio should know best how badly that would have played out for them last year. They would have never won the naty.

This has been widely floated in the expanded playoff model.
So if it is a 24 team playoff:
Big ten 7
Sec 7
Big 12 4
ACC 4
Group of 5 2

Conference title weekend becomes play in weekend:
Big 10 7 vs 8
SEC 7 vs 8
Big 12 4 vs 5
ACC 4 vs 5
Group of 5 1 vs group of 5 4
Group of 5 2 vs group of 5 3

I know group of 5 is out dated

Some people keep trying to have byes for the top teams, which I dislike. In the 24 team playoff, 8 teams will have a first round bye, which just makes it harder on the teams that play in round one, and gives the bye teams an extra week to heal and prepare.

Just go with 8, 16 or 32 teams. 16 is the sweet spot and will take the same number of weeks as last year’s 12 team playoff.

I actually like the 24 team format and more importantly I like making the conference championship game meaningful. Having Big Ten #7 play Big Ten #8 would be locally exciting as it would give us a shot to be in the playoffs. Having a first round bye and seedings would keep the regular season very competitive.

I love anything that give teams that are not helmet schools a better chance to show that they are for real. Remember our 2019 team - the fact is in a 16 team playoff we probably don't get in. Not because we weren't one of the better teams, but because our only top 25 win was against Penn State. If the SEC truly believed that there "middle schools were great." they would be all over this type of system. The reality is the Illinois, MN, and Iowa's are just as good as most SEC schools and they don't want a system that shows this. B1G is only conference that wants a championship won on the field.

I wasn’t suggesting anything
I am saying what others suggested

If there aren’t going to be auto bids, they should contract to 8
The thing that devalues the regular season isn’t an expanded playoff…it’s subjective criteria to get in.

I liked 12 if there were going to be 7 conference champ auto bids.
I liked 16 if there are going to be 9 conference champ auto bids.

I'd be down if they removed conf championship week entirely and made it round one, with higher seeds hosting and then going to neutral sites in round two onward. Particularly if they do this gigantic expansion that some have been pushing. But yeah, don't make a title game a playoff game, that would be silly

Yeah I addressed that they would not want to.

But then every other plans diminishes the game… this one is interesting as it makes it meaningful.

That’s why I said some people instead of you.

I agree with conference champs getting auto bids.
