Media Prediction Thread: Northwestern State at Minnesota

I’ll predict 84-16 matching the score of the 1983 Nebraska vs Minnesota game, however, in our favor this time

Here's a couple graphs from College Football News on their 55-0 Gophers pick
Minnesota has to use this game to open up the scoring punch. There should be a balance, and the starters should get their work in over the first 30 minutes and then sit, but if there aren’t a bajillion points scored here, there’s a problem.

Northwestern State lost to Tulsa 62-28 last year and had an 87-10 problem against South Alabama. The Gophers will put up points early, and then the dogs will be called off.

Gophers on SI predicts a 49-0 win for Minnesota
Betting odds are typically aren't released for games between FBS and FCS opponents until the night before or morning of the game. I expect Minnesota to be favored by at least 40 points in this matchup, and probably closer to 50.

Northwestern State is among the worst Division I football teams in the country. A win over the Gophers would be the biggest in their program's history and probably the worst upset loss in Minnesota's. The Gophers have advantages all over the field, and I fully expect them to cruise to an easy win in Week 2.

The Daily Gopher (SB Nation) picks Minnesota, 44-0
This Northwestern State program is in bad shape. Their season-opening 20-10 win over Alcorn State snapped a 20-game losing streak that stretched back to 2022 and included five contests that were forfeited in 2023 due to the shooting death of a player. The Gophers should roll.

Is the 54 Fleck hung on Nebraska the most points scored during his time here? His teams always underwhelm in these games. I'd say 34-0.

It's the 62-10 win over Western Illinois. Most points scored since 2006. That year they beat Temple 62-0 and Indiana 63-26.

Normally I think he grounds and eats clock, but with the new faces on offense I think he might want to get more reps and work on the pass game. Probably still chews clock most of the 4th.

Picks and Parlays predicts a 43-3 victory for Minnesota
The Minnesota Golden Gophers won in workmanlike fashion on opening night with a 13-point victory over Buffalo. The Golden Gophers will perform better on Saturday against a less-talented opponent, using the talented passing arm of Drake Lindsey and a running game led by Darius Taylor, who had 141 yards in the win over Buffalo. Northwestern State will not be able to drive down the field against a much tougher defense than the Demons are accustomed to. Minnesota Golden Gophers win and cover

Nice to see Drake getting called talented already. The kid is exciting!

52-10 2019 vs Maryland. Not the most scored in Pjs era but my mom told father and I to leave if it was a blow out due to a family function. We didn’t and my ride share app didn’t work, we were in dog house but the best offense since 2003 (probably better). No regrets

Pioneer Press predicts a 44-3 Minnesota win.
Minnesota Offense Vs. Northwestern State Defense:
The Gophers put up 443 total yards in the opener, but had only 23 points to show for it after only one of seven drives inside the 25 ended with a touchdown. The U’s most talked-about drive was a 16-play, 58-yarder that sucked the final 9 minutes and 45 seconds off the clock and ended the game. “Can you go take somebody’s soul?” head coach P.J. Fleck said on his radio show about the impact of those types of drives. “Nothing makes me happier.” NW State’s starting safeties had sub-60 coverage grades in the season opener. EDGE: Gophers

Minnesota Defense Vs. Northwestern State Offense:
QB Abram Johnston passed for only 85 yards, but added 69 rushing yards in Week 1. The U’s ability to account for him on the ground will be a point of emphasis. His meek passing total was one of the lowest outputs in FCS last week. The Demons offensive schemes will look to spread out the U defense, with three running backs sharing the workload against Alcorn State. The Gophers had seven TFLs last week and should be able to set the Demons behind the sticks with regularity on Saturday. EDGE: Gophers

Special teams:
New kicker Brady Denaburg was a perfect 3 for 3 on field goals (long of 38) and 5 for 6 for touchbacks on kickoffs against Buffalo. New punter Tom Weston averaged 43 yards and put two of his three inside the 20-yard line. Pretty strong start for both transfers. EDGE: Gophers

Prediction:
This game didn’t have a betting line midweek, but it’s fair to say the Gophers are enormous favorites. With a road game against a Power Four opponent (Cal) up next, it’s important to build more confidence while staying mostly healthy

I’ll predict 84-16 matching the score of the 1983 Nebraska vs Minnesota game, however, in our favor this time
If the Gophers had actually scored 16 in that game, I would have considered them within striking distance.

For this game I am going to go with 70-0 and set myself for disappointment when it turns out to be 48-6 with an early dog-calling-off but not early enough with someone important with a non-contact ACL.
