Week One: Offensive Line

OL did a good job in pass pro-run blocking was okay at best. Had a hard time sealing off the interior and don’t think they always had great body position. Not much push at all.

Really excited for Roy at LT-going to be a good one. Still have 4 weeks to get it right before B1G play so we are fine.
They were selling out to stop the run, and make our (redshirt) freshman QB, first start, beat them. And he did!

Until the last drive when they were gassed and couldn't stop us.

This is exactly what I saw. Buffalo regularly had 8 in the box on any down that might be a run down. They ran a number of run blitzes and stunts to confuse an O-line that is still coming together. They were determined to stop the run and force the inexperienced QB to beat them. It is very hard to run successfully into loaded boxes. Also, I think some people may be underestimating the quality of Buffalo’s defense. So, the lack of productivity early on is not unexpected. The Gophers did make adjustments and had some success as the game went on.

Excellent analysis, great post.

The OL did a great job picking up the blitz on the 60 yard TD and Drake did an elite job of moving around to buy time.

Lindsey stepping forward and right to avoid the 6 man rush on that play was great. It was made possible by great blocking, especially the right guard moving two defenders to the left, and DT blocking the blitzing linebacker.

That was good.

Also felt like Lindsey ... knew there would be space where his man was going. That was very nice to see, I think we saw something like that a few times. Very impressive if that is what it was.

Ryan Burns thought that Greg Johnson was elite at Guard (but I believe touchdownvikings that he goofed on that stunt).
It would be nice to still have Daniels for what 3 years? He started and looked good for OSU.

Daniels was a loss for us, but I’m glad he got the start at OSU. Hate to see a kid transfer home and then ride the bench. I am concerned he got a low PFF grade, but hopefully he picks it up the next game.

The interception off the TE's foot was bad luck. It was a play with a lotta questions...starting with how can that defensive hit be ignored?
But the TE sneak had to be the worst play call of the night! They must of practiced it but no lineman got any push at all...they all got stood up with really tight spacing....nothing to do, no where to go for the ball carrier.
Was still a bad pass but I agree bad luck. He was on the ground before Drake let it go.

Great field awareness by Lindsey to find time by moving up in the pocket to let Smith get open.

Anyone care to share the PFF scores for Oline (and other Gophers)?

Like I said, a lot of questions...he had started the process of throwing when he was on the ground...
was he unable to pull it back? or did he throw it because he was looking for the the flag? was his intention to throw it in the dirt and move on to the next play but the TE rolled in the way? did he misfire and intended to throw it farther? shorter? what was he thinking? what happened in his mind? And how was it not a penalty?
After the TE got blasted was the best play to go elsewhere with a throw or run? Were there other looks within the play call? What's he coached to do?

Second half was much better for OL and they will improve as the season goes. Two transfers and a RS Freshmen starting.

Overall I thought they played fine. My biggest gripe is not being able to get a push on that 4th and 1 attempt.
It was just not a good play call - tush push should be for very short yardage ideally (like inches, not feet). But I totally understand being frustrated by not getting a yard.
