Max is the best of the back-ups. They may trade for a QB with some experience and competence. I think he makes the team as the #3. They won’t go into the season with two rookies 1 & 2.

I agree. Would selfishly love to see him as qb2 esp with the decent chance McCarthy is either injury prone or a dud, but from a strictly business standpoint you need to bring in a qb2 with experience if they aren't keeping Howell. I think it would be really irresponsible to not hold onto Brosmer as your qb3 with what he's shown, however. I'd figure he'll get a couple years out of the league if he remains healthy based on his smarts and decision making alone.

The announcers were very complimentary to Brosmer
 



It's my belief they didn't have Howell play a snap because he's already been established as the #2 QB. I also don't think the Vikings will keep three (3) QBs on the 53-man roster. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens if they try to stash Brosmer on the PS.

Yeah, the doofus talking over the nice TD throw was annoying.
 

i don't think he works his way back to the practice squad if he doesn't make the roster. Some team that carries 3 qb's will pick him up. He looked good even vs. the Titan's first team D. He's got more than enough arm strength. HIs stats tonight would have been insane if Fleming hadn't dropped that perfect drop in the bucket pass in the 4th quarter.

Disagree. If KOC was going to try and sneak him onto the practice squad, he wouldn't have played him so much. Other teams now have plenty to see and evaluate and, I think, would snap him up in a second. I think KOC keeps him on 53 and the question becomes if they go for another qb for #2 or if Howell has won that job.

Every college team tried to intercept and determine the other teams plays. Michigan was just better at it than others. What I see is a bunch of whiners who tried to cry because they lost the game. Connor Stallion is a genius at intercepting and deciphering code. The US Military did a great job.

I'll bet you were a big fan of the Astros World Series team.

Either way, if you know what the defense is doing it makes it a lot easier to "read" it. Just like hitting a pitch if you know it's going to be a curveball.

It's not even against the rules to steal signs, during the game.

It's only against the rules for staff to attend games in person of future opponents and try to steal/learn the signs then.
 



This should be a moot point, now that they're allowing college teams to have a player on the field that can hear the playcalls directly like in the NFL?

No need for signs

This team could be a contender, if the defense is as good as we hope.

If McCarthy goes out 1-3 games with some tweaks, we need someone who we can trust to come in and win those games. This Year.

Our window with this defense and Flores is probably this year and maybe next.

Every MLB, NFL, and likely most BCS size schools have done similar things. Houston, NE, and Michigan got caught. Sign stealing is the oldest dodge in sports. It goes all the way back to pre-history battleground signals.

The “guilty” just freshened it up a little. To think that anyone else is 100% innocent is laughable. Winners sometimes “cheat” the best. At least these sports are not rigged like the NBA does it. ;)

Just because he’s number 3 doesn’t mean they wouldn’t go to him if JJ is a dud…once the season is lost, they’ve gotta kick the tires on him.

To a point above that you have done a good job disputing. Is advance scounting now against the rules? I'm an old man and back in the day, our basketball coach would send another teacher to our next opponent to scout them. We knew what was going to happen when the opposing point guard shouted "One!" or "Two!" It didn't make much difference because we were pretty bad on defense, but we would managed a steal or could mess things up occasionally.

As you say, sign stealing and advance scouting have been around forever. I find it hard to believe that advance scouts aren't trying to decode sideline signals as well as monitoring the plays.

As for Brosner, as someone said above, the Vikings have a window and if McCarthy underpeforms or gets injured, they will need an experience guy to get in the driver's seat. Brosner has played well this pre-season and I've seen some things in his game that we didn't really see last season with the Gophers. He has an NFL future, but he may bounce around a bit. If the Vikings keep 3 QBs, he will be one of them. If they keep two, Brosner will probably end up on the practice squad and from there, who knows what happens. He could easily be snatched up by a team that is keeping 3 QBs or find himself on someone else's practice squad.

The thing I consider, though, is that Jefferson and Addison are huge difference makers regardless of who's tossing the ball. I would bet, again from a business perspective, the shrewder choice would be going with the guy who's played real games, not just preseason ones, because you have a defense that can get you into the playoffs on their own if you keep them fresh.

I would 100% prefer Brosmer taking qb2 snaps in the regular season, but if JJ is a dud and Brosmer gets put in and we still have a chance to get a playoff berth and he struggles and we get bounced, there will be a lot of questions as to why we didn't run with Howell instead.

This is all assuming that Howell is the presumptive #2. If it ends up being Max, the argument is moot.

I wish there was a Randall Cunningham floating around available right now but there isn't. Other career backups that might be available are career backups for a reason and can't be trusted to win games.
 

I don't think there's much chance Brosmer starts the season as the backup. Because they'll probably want to go with the veteran to finish a game if JJ get hurt or is very ineffective. If the situation is JJ is going to miss a lot of games, then I think there's a chance Brosmer gets a shot.
 

Watched the pre-season for the first time and saw most of Brosmer's snaps. Concur with all that has been written. Asbsent the Vikes having a massive brain-fart Brosmer should be on the 53-man roster.

The thing I noted was every...and I mean every...shot to the sidelines of KOC had him relaxed and smiling...sometimes ever so slight...while Max was on the field.

Methinks the HC is very pleased with his young padawan...

I’d agree he definitely has played well enough to earn a roster spot. Going to come down to roster construction I would guess. In his favor might be the risk of losing him if they try to put him on the practice squad…
 

I will say this: if the Vikes choose to only keep two qbs, it's worth keeping Brosmer over Howell. Then they can stash him, and if JJ gets hurt they can sign one of a handful of journeyman qbs who will be free agents come the regular season who have the same experience and capability level of Howell. I'm certain there will be one or two FAs available mid-season who have had some good run in the league.
