Brosmer in Vikings Game

Patrick Mahomes played 2 full seasons in college at Texas Tech. In his last season his team's defense gave up an average of 43.5 points per game, and that included 3 cupcakes.

Josh Allen played 2 seasons at Wyoming. His last season they went 8-3 in games he played with losses to Oregon, at Iowa, and at Boise St.

All accurate, I guess my point is there are tons of borderline NFL QBs, which Brosmer is at this point, that lost plenty of games in college. It really doesn’t mean a lot.

if Brosmer is this high level of a talent -- and good on whichever of the Gopher coaching staff found him and/or green lit him coming here -- ..... then how did we lose at home to North Carolina, a team we had no business losing to, and get blown out at home in the 2nd half vs Iowa?

After that (first half of Michigan was bad too, but after that the light switch flipped) was much better.


What happened?? We had a NFL QB on our roster, but still struggled those two games? Why?

Even if we win just the UNC game, that might have been enough to have a significantly higher rated bowl last year, wouldn't it?

First game on a new team. And the team lost by two points. There were two missed field goals. And Brosmer improved as the year went on and the team meshed.

Anyways......where is this "high level" talent narrative coming from? He's an accurate quarterback that generally makes good decisions. But we're talking about a guy who went undrafted and may make the team as the third string quarterback. Nobody is seriously talking about him developing into a starting NFL quarterback at this point.....so it's weird to be poking holes due to a few tough games.

Yeah judging a QB by wins vs losses alone is like judging a pitcher by their wins vs losses alone ... not many people do that, for good reason.

Everyone has to stop buying into the media's spin that QBs are responsible for the outcome of games or the Super Bowl titles are necessary and required to be great. Ultra dumb.

Plus you could tell it was a limited playbook. Typical vanilla game plan from Fleck and Co.

Before yesterday, I would have still said it was Rypien's job to lose at QB #3, only for the fact that McCown/KOC thought enough of Rypien to not only bring him in last season, but keep him into this season. That would have been tough to overcome.

Now? Seems pretty clear it's Brosmer's job to lose (the #3 gig).

That said, how should we define 'high end talent'?

There are very few human beings who are currently listed as quarterbacks on NFL rosters. Even if Brosmer fails to make the 53 man squad, he's already accomplished something that's relatively rare, and can't be taken away from him. Compare him to hundreds of college quarterbacks who were or are eligible to move up to the NFL in 2025 and he is, in fact, 'high end', simply because he's still on the Vikings and is still hoping to make the final 53. The Vikings seem to believe that his talent is of a high enough level to offer him a pretty nice UDFA deal, and the team is investing a considerable amount of time and resources in him.

My point: what kind of curve are we using for evaluating what is or is not 'high end'?

Some of the comments by KOC were pretty telling of Brosmer's understanding and command of the offense. Like, he's waaaaay ahead of where they would expect someone at his level to be. I'm glad to see him taking full advantage of it!

Because in wet conditions in the first game at the power 5 level the gophers lost by missing a field goal

Because the defense couldn’t get off the field and the team only had a few possessions in the second half. On those possessions the OL got worked in an 11 on 11 game

The gophers turned the ball over in their own territory and essentially gave Michigan a free touchdown. That Michigan team beat bama in a bowl game and beat the national champ in the last regular season game. The gophers made mistakes that cost the game

Because those were games against top 30 teams in the country and in an 11 on 11 game the 5 OL matters sometimes too

Max looked pretty good again. Little harder to tell because a lot of blitzing and worse OL play but I think he still looked pretty good given the situation.

I think I would be more comfortable with him as the QB2 than Howell at this point. Not saying either is the best situation though.

I don't think anyone is going to seriously claim Max is a starting NFL QB or some sort of wunderkind, but I've been saying since around the Michigan game last year once they let him have more reign of the offense that he could absolutely have a Chase Daniels type of career at the next level. He clearly puts in the non-gameday work prep, has an eye for what the defense gives him, and does a good job adjusting. Those traits along with the ability to come off the bench and stay calm, lead the offense, and have the anticipation to make the necessary throws is what you need in a backup who is effectively a second set of eyes from the sideline, especially if you've got your franchise guy locked down or think you do.

I don't if I would go that far yet but I think I have seen enough that I think it's a possibility now. I could see him being one of those backups that gets hyped a lot and he's sitting behind JJ. Somebody really hard up for a QB a couple years from now might toss some picks at the Vikes for him and that's how he gets his shot.

He has a lot of things you like in a starter:
#1- Good enough arm
#2- throws with anticipation, not when WR become open.
#3- Accuracy is good
#4- He seems to have picked up the offense very well
#5- We know from his time with the Gophers he is a good leader
#6- He seems to read the field well
#7- Not a complete statute in the pocket

I think his ceiling is probably middle of the league starter if he hits his top end potential. But then it's the NFL, nobody is really looking for that guy that might be middle of the pack. So for a guy like that you need the right circumstances to happen so they get a shot and then they have to look good when they get that shot. So, while I like what I see he's still got a long road to see actual playing time.

I don't think the comparison is very good. Brosmer seems to have a little better arm, throws with anticipation better (at least so far), and make the smart play a more than YOLOing. Keenum got away with a lot of bad decisions that season for the Vikings and was more of a risk taker than Max seems to be. I would say Max is probably more on the Brock Purdy mold of QB. He's going to go out there and be accurate, make the right reads, and throw with good timing, but not going to be throwing a lot of flashy balls and wow you that way. Interestingly, JJ McCarthy is a lot that way too but is more physically gifted than Brosmer. JJ has a bigger arm, slightly bigger and more athletic..ect.

But if I'm KoC I like the idea of having a guy like Brosmer on the roster that can probably step in and play QB with the same mentality as JJ. Both are really sharp minded for football, good leaders, the kind of QBs people will follow. I don't think you would have to change the offense much for Brosmer other than JJ has more experience with it.

I think overall it's a decent comparison. Keenum has made $55M in the NFL. I think Max would take that comparison.
