Shooter: Medved called University of St. Thomas officials, offering to play the Tommies in the first game of their new arena this fall.

The anger here about even mentioning St. Thomas is quite frankly embarrassing. Just exemplifies how far this program and its fanbase has fallen.

They play in the Summit League for cripes sake. Can’t believe how terrified some are on GH to talk about them.

Is anyone here "angry"? Mildly annoyed. But they have their own board now.

I do wish the Gophers would play them so the local media would shut up about it.

I don’t know. Some of the posts seem pretty upset they get brought up.

I think there is room for those who can be fans of two D1 teams in the cities. But when you got folks lined up around the block to squeeze into the Barn every night, maybe I’m wrong…..

This hardly even registers on the "news" scale.....since UST is so far from mattering. And this is coming from a Gophers bball fan. lol.

The opposite of love is indifference.

Unfortunately for some Gopher fans, that board was not able to save them from the 4-5 threads per year about UST basketball because someone posted this thread here. It's clogging up all the traffic and making it harder for me to find the Dame Lillard/Webber State thread - you know the stuff about Gopher basketball.

If they wanted to play the U so bad, they would have made it happen.
They weren’t offered a game by the U, they were offered an exhibition game

Would’ve been a better story if they turned down a real game

Instead what we have going on is a bunch of UST haters bumping a UST thread on the main hoops page

you all are missing the point. this was a veiled attempt to see and kick the tires on a new BB arena, an see up close how to replace the Barn

For years University of Kentucky refused to play Louisville. Of course, initially the unstated reason was Kentucky only recruited white players and Louisville was integrated. But then, Kentucky felt playing the Cardinals was a lose lose proposition. Maybe Minny feels the same about the game being a lose lose situation. Furthermore, most of the Squads on the Gopher schedule may be cupcakes, but, they are nationally recognized as educational and athletic institutions of varying degrees. Unfortunately, most people outside of Minnesota, have never heard of St Thomas and think it's an island.

People in Minnesota (ie Gopher fans) are much more familiar with St. Thomas than Gardner-Webb.

But yeah, there have been programs that took awful stances before. I don't know if it really helps our decision for not playing St. Thomas by saying other programs have done it too, "Kentucky didn't play Louisville because they didn't want to play against black people".

Speaking of Louisville, they have played Bellarmine, located in Louisville, I believe 3 times in the Knights 5 years in Division 1

Reusse says he had breakfast with Niko and "hears" they will play next year.

This is the perfect analogous situation. Bellarmine is in the Atlantic Sun conference (pretty much the same level as the Summit), and has been reasonably competitive against some big dogs over the years. If Louisville loses a game to them one year, what exactly is the consequence? Good for David who gets to beat Goliath in a single battle, but Goliath will be fine.
