Just don't bring up the 1960 National Championship till after the game. Won the National Title that year, but lost to them in the Rosebowl after the National Title was awarded.Yes please!!!
Of all the west coast teams now in the Big Ten, Wasington is the one I’d like to see become a rival.
No hate, just honest competition with another team and fan base much like our own.
Was a really important game in college football historyJust don't bring up the 1960 National Championship till after the game. Won the National Title that year, but lost to them in the Rosebowl after the National Title was awarded.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Especially since all of this occurred before I was born.
Still happened a couple times after as well. Alabama was named national champions in 1964 and 1973, but lost their bowl games (Orange and Sugar respectively). Happened a decade prior, too, Oklahoma won in 1950 but lost the Sugar Bowl. Was a really important game in college football history
Before that, the national title was awarded at end of regular season and bowl games were exhibitions. After the game what the post season in college football was really changed.
Washington is Minnesota’s 14th most played opponent.Minnesota is Washington’s 12th most played opponent of all time.
1) Oregon 105
6) USC 87
7) UCLA 77
12) Minnesota 17
14) Michigan 15
16) Ohio state 12
18) Illinois 11
19) Purdue and Nebraska tie 10
Wild that the new big ten actually contains 9 of their top 20 played opponents.
Oh I thought it had changed by the mid 60sStill happened a couple times after as well. Alabama was named national champions in 1964 and 1973, but lost their bowl games (Orange and Sugar respectively). Happened a decade prior, too, Oklahoma won in 1950 but lost the Sugar Bowl.
Although we don't play the Huskies again until next year and again in 2027. It'll be the first game against Washington since 1977. Minnesota leads the series 10-7.
If history proves anything the Oregon game may be a barn-burner. All four games with the Ducks have been decided by 7 points or less, with three decided by 4 points or less.
Have enough rivals and an extra trophy game that is not needed.Yes please!!!

I agree, but not all rivalries involve trophies. Some are because of what once was or now is at stake. IIRC Michigan and Ohio State just play for bragging rights and at one time it was pretty much whoever won that game was champions and the participant in the Rosebowl.Have enough rivals and an extra trophy game that is not needed.
Love the post.Yes please!!!

I really do think if Kalen DeBoer stayed at Washington there would've been a budding rivarly building with him recruiting Minnesota heavily (and still is with Rudy Voss) due to his ties to the area.Yes please!!!

That is the story and since they already won the national championship the Gopher coaches and players vacationed more than they practiced, which was the accepted way for a Rose Bowl exhibition game.Just don't bring up the 1960 National Championship till after the game. They have to beat us for it to be a rivalry.I'd rather it be USC. Same colors. Storied historical programs with multiple Natties.
Way more fun to beat them vs the other Pac squads
If you are Goldy and a Faux opposing coach you can...You can’t just make a rivalry, something has to make it happen organically.
Chicago could qualify as Big 10 as they were a founding member of the the conference and remained in the Big 10 for 44 years.Washington is Minnesota’s 14th most played opponent.
The only non big ten opponents they’ve played more than Washington are:
11) Iowa state 23
12) Chicago 18
15) Pittsburg 12 (the next one after Washington is why I included them)
18) USC 9
19) Maryland 8
34) Oregon UCLA and Rutgers tie 4
Yes. But are not currently.Chicago could qualify as Big 10 as they were a founding member of the the conference and remained in the Big 10 for 44 years.
Well, they are red.Sure. When their fans come to town, we can throw those stupid Washington Red Delicious apples at them and mock them, as those apples are neither red, nor delicious.
Correct I was referring to that pointless Governors Bell. Had some classic games against Penn St over the years buts it’s not a rivalry just put the trophy on college football hall of fame.I agree, but not all rivalries involve trophies. Or in the woodworking shop. IIRC It's needed repairs.Correct I was referring to that pointless Governors Bell. Had some classic games against Penn St over the years buts it’s not a rivalry just put the trophy on college football hall of fame.
I definitely think the Bell could be retired and put in the CFB Hall of Fame, and I think it would be great if Wisconsin did the same with the Slab of Bacon.Correct I was referring to that pointless Governors Bell. Maryland is ACCChicago is Big Ten.
Wikipedia recognizes it, that's good enough for me.I definitely think the Bell could be retired and put in the CFB Hall of Fame, and I think it would be great if Wisconsin did the same with the Slab of Bacon.
I'd much rather have the Bits of Broken Chair trophy recognized as official over the Bell, considering we have 64 total meetings with Nebraska compared to 17 with Penn State, which ironically is the same amount as the aforementioned Huskies of Washington.
