Per CBS:

College basketball's regular season is expanding. The NCAA Division I Council approved on Wednesday an increase from 31 to 32 games, beginning with the 2026-27 season, sources told CBS Sports. The vote was a rubber-stamp move after the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Oversight Committees voted in favor of the change back in late March.

The update comes after a 19-year run of a 31-game maximum for the regular season. Since 2006-07, the format was 28 or 29 predetermined games, plus allowance for three-game or two-game multi-team events added in (making it a 31-game cap). Starting in 2026, teams won't be required to play 32 games, they'll merely have the option to do so — with most expected to up their quota by one under the new rule.

The increase will also push teams that make the NCAA championship game to play in as many as 41 games.

The primary issue driving the decision to go to 32 is tied to multi-team events (MTEs), which had become more restrictive with some of their NCAA guidelines due to conference expansion leading to schools from the same leagues playing in the same events. That was previously not allowed (but now is via a waiver). Additionally, sometimes three-game MTEs were roadblocks for a variety of schools trying to work through the logistics of nonconference scheduling.

Go Gophers!!

Somehow, I see a boost in season ticket prices following this, whether we get another home game or not.

Go Gophers!!

I think the maximum that CBS listed is incorrect.

32 Regular Season Game is max out with CTE.
5 Conference Tournament Games in supersized Conferences such as the the Big 10 who Qualify for (Not So Much) Weakling Wednseday.
7 NCAA Tournament Games for those that are in the First 4 (in the Current Format).

That would total 44.

That seems rather unlikely, but 42 certainly does not for a team that only get's a 1st Round Bye in their Conference Tournament and would then play 4 if they make the Championship.

Dang I got a bad attitude...why do I see the Gophers justifying a MIAC game with the extra game? Or, best case just another team ranked between 250 and 350?

I wish out of conference scheduling would be taken out of the hands of individual schools. It already seems weird in a sports leagues that teams get to pick their regular season opponents to fit their objectives for the season, and too many schools, especially colleges in Minneapolis, have abused the privilege by scheduling awful out of conference slates.

Point taken, but I would not limit the strategy to simply Minneapolis based teams. It’s a common strategy for P5 that aren’t functionally slated for the tournament at the beginning of the season.

We’ve had terrible non conference schedules for years, but so have a bundle of other fan bases.

Under Big John Thompson, I always enjoyed the annual St Leo vs Georgetown showdowns.

High entertainment value. One of my former students went to St. Leo's and didn't know they had a basketball team.
