2025 Transfer Portal Watch

Supportive bunch, they are! 😉
Haha. Some people also saying they wished him well and it wasn’t a good fit. Also some concern they couldn’t develop him/figure out how to use him.

His only good game last year (5/10 3PT, 23 points) was against La Salle so the narrative was he could only succeed against slower defenders. Probably doesn’t help that his worst game of the previous season (1/7, 3 points total) was Belmont’s only high major opponent.

Good late addition for the Blue Jays

I couldn't play for Underwood. Coleman Hawkins said in interview why he transferred from Illinois to Kansas St., "..I couldn't see myself going another year through those practices (w/Underwood)". Jakucionis had enough after one year, as did Ivisic X2, Tre White, Morez Johnson, Carey Booth.

Any idea if it was difficulty? Stylisitic? Or are perhaps they don’t like being called out?

I recall Bobby Jackson saying some things about Clem’s practices. Absolutely hating them at the time, and revering then later on. Said they really taight he about himself.

Gone are the days players have to stick around and listen to a disciplinarian coach. Off to the next pay day.

If that's true- and it might well be, he won't last long without a big wallet.

Luckily for him, Illinois has one of the deepest basketball NIL warchests in the Big Ten.

Not as lucky for him, with the monetary resources they have, the pressure will grow and the seat will get hotter with a few more 7th-place finishes in the Big Ten and a few more 1st and 2nd round exits in the NCAA.

You are pretty far off base.

Hawkins loves Underwood. He spent four years here and graduated, then went for a bag. He constantly talked about winning at Illinois while KState struggled. He still follows Illinois and still talks to Underwood weekly. He jokes a lot, too, like about the practices. He is a lifelong Illini, just ask him.

Jakucionis is a freaking lottery pick. He credits Underwood for his development as a one and done. Why would you expect him back? Same with Will Riley. Illinois’ first two one and dones.

Ivisic is back and talked his brother into joining him. The offense runs through Tomi.

Tre White will go to his fourth school in four years. He had his best year at Illinois. He wanted to play more with the ball in his hands and Illinois couldn’t give him that. He is best at the corner dunker spot. He had Ty Rodgers returning at his spot plus some talented Euros. Rodgers started for an Elite 8 team and is back.

Carey Booth was a bust. He couldn’t get off the bench so he transferred down a level to play.

Morez had a nice freshman year. Really good rebounder. His dad said that he didn’t want Morez to end up like Kofi. Kofi was an All American but scored mostly around the hoop. Morez wants to extend his shooting out to three for NBA hopes and Michigan offered him twice what Illinois offered. Good luck to him. It will be interesting to see if he’s shooting threes for Michigan.

Underwood gets talent. Players love him. He’s always got their backs. Tied for most wins in the Big Ten over the last 6 years with Purdue.

Underwood is a jerk.
He’s really not. He’s an extremely kind man. You just see from the outside. Do a little more research about his relationships with players, his close friends among the Big Ten coaches and his many charitable activities. He just had a huge Coaches against Cancer fundraiser. In the last few years, he’s had Izzo, Painter, McCaffery, Chris Collins, Dana Altman and others speak at the event which has raised millions.

I know him personally through our shared lodge membership and you really have him all wrong.

Thanks for the rebuke. I don't know him. I just see the scowl and the "Bobby Knight" anger issues on TV. He may have a generous heart that I am not able to see.

Good to hear. Thank you. I heard the interview with Hawkins and I just sat up and went, "Whoa!". That plus his public demeanor biased me, much like my visceral reaction to Cronin.

They're already dominating the number of consonants on the roster.
