Per Shama:

Niko Medved is now the fifth head men’s basketball coach at the University of Minnesota in the last 25 years. There’s reason to believe he’s the best since the Clem Haskins era of 1986-1999.

Haskins ran afoul of the NCAA, but the man could coach. He was outstanding at developing players and superb at motivating them. Popular with the fans and community, Haskins had winning teams who frequently packed Williams Arena because of their sustained success.

The NCAA investigation that later found the Gophers guilty of violations led to the Haskins firing after the 1999 season. His successor, Dan Monson, was a wunderkind after two seasons as head coach at Gonzaga where the Bulldogs made the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight in year two.

But Monson, 37 when he was hired, had the worst situation of any Gopher coach this millennium—having to operate under the dark cloud of the Haskins demise and the limitations applied on his program because of NCAA sanctions. After seven seasons he was fired with a 36-60 Big Ten record.

Tubby Smith rode the prior success of Rick Pitino to a national championship as head coach at Kentucky in 1998. Smith had been a Pitino assistant but was sliding in on-court success and popularity in Lexington when he left the Wildcats to succeed Monson.

At Minnesota, despite often flirting with an above .500 Big Ten record, Smith couldn’t break through with a winner on the national scene. He had just two NCAA Tournament teams in six seasons, although his overall record of 124-81 and winning percentage of .605 is the best among Gophers coaches this millennium.

The last two coaches prior to the Medved hire this week could be referred to as trainees. Pitino’s son, Richard, was hired at 30 years old in 2013 with one prior season of head coaching experience (at small school Florida International). His successor in 2021, Ben Johnson, had never been a head coach.

On-the-job training didn’t work out well for either. Pitino won .365 percent of his Big Ten games. Johnson, whose teams twice finished last in the Big Ten, was fired this month with a 22-57 league record in four seasons (.278 winning percentage).

Smith had the best resume of the U hires through Johnson. He had won at Kentucky and other stops before Lexington. At the U he came close to having the right core of players for a breakthrough season.

Now here comes Medved with a resume and experience that is distinctly better than Monson, Pitino and Johnson. The 51-year-old Minneapolis born Medved has earned sustained success since beginning his head coaching career at Furman in 2013. Unlike Tubby, he never had the privilege of landing at a blue-blood program, instead having to make the most out of limited resources and legacies.

At Colorado State, his most recent stop, Medved had the Rams in the NCAA Tournament three of the last four years. He owns an overall career record of 222-172 and was 143-85 at Colorado State where he was the only coach ever to win 20 games or more five times.

Go Gophers!!

If Niko has anywhere close to the success he had at CSU, this town would blow up for Gopher hoops.

I highly doubt that. Pitino had at least 2 seasons with similar success as Medved and was axed a couple of years later. There was no "town blowing up for the Gophers". Coming off his 1 NCAA win, there was hardly any heat for Gopher hoops the following fall.

Barn is a few years older, Big 10 is 4 teams bigger, T-Wolves have a pulse.

Medved is going to have to surpass the success he had as CSU for the Twin Cities to even remotely blow up for Gopher hoops.

I disagree. When the Gophers were winning under Pitino interest was definitely high. The issue was he couldn't sustain and there was always an injury or scandal that killed momentum. Way more casuals and lapsed fans talked hoops than they had before. If Pitino could have kept it going it would have popped off.

I wouldn't say interest was "high" under Pitino. So we already disagree.

The average attendance at the Barn under Pitino was NEVER higher than it was during Smith's final season (12,580).

The 2 seasons Pitino got the Gophers to the NCAA Tournament, avg attendance was well under 11,000.

Even more casual fans have dropped out because of the general state of NCAA athletics, which is another major hurdle Medved will have to navigate.

Medved is going to have to win at a clip much greater than he has previously to get this city to "blow up" for Gopher hoops. That seems rather obvious.

You sat in the front row in the desk closest to the teacher.

I think you need a wedgie, Mr. Fun Guy!!

Other factors play into attendance including what you said in the second part. And attendance is hardly the only way to measure fan interest.

We will just have to agree to disagree like we do about splitting a stadium with the Wolves.

No disagreement on that part, but it's probably the most tangible.

For Medved to get the current Barn to 85% capacity (which would be higher than Pitino) he's going to have to win at a higher rate and quicker than he did at Colorado St. It took him to Year 4 to get the Rams to the NCAA Tournament. Same with Pitino with the Gophers.

I'm rooting for him to do just that. It's a different ball game now. For better and worse.

Couple things:
I think with NIL/revenue sharing Medved is maybe setup with the best chance for success in the last 25 years for somebody to win at Minnesota.
If we win attendance will increase but that is tougher challenge. NCAA changing landscape has created fan apathy around the country. Professional sports in the Twin Cities have never been more high profile competing for attention and dollars. A 65 inch television is $300 something dollars...it's much easier to stay home and watch. Williams Arena is getting older and older and the lack of amenities is becoming more and more noticeable as ticket prices go higher and higher.
So, getting fans in the building I think might be tougher than winning....on the other hand...we are starved for a winner!! Love to see the Barn packed!

There are things the U needs to do as well. Make the student tickets free or super cheap. Give away tickets to local high schools for some of the lesser B1G games and non-conference games. Just get butts in seats and don't worry about squeezing every $$. It will pay off down the line.

He had 3, Dave.

Pitino's "2 Seasons"
Year 3: 8-23 // 2-16
Year 4: 24-10 // 11-7 // NCAA 1st Round
Year 5: 15-17 // 4-14
Year 6: 22-14 // 9-11 // NCAA 2nd Round
Year 7: 15-16 // 8-12
Year 8: 14-15 // 6-14

Not exactly a blueprint for 'blowing a town up'.

3 NCAA Tournaments in 4 years including CSU's first trip in nine years and first tournament win in 12 years is a blueprint for 'blowing a town up'. Throw in a conference tournament title for good measure..

They both got equally as far in the NCAA Tournament. 2nd Round.

You didn't include Pitino''s first 2 seasons at Minnesota for whatever reason. If you go with Pitino''s full 8 seasons it's much more comparable to Medved's 7 in Ft Collins. Medved had 1 more NCAA bid. Pitino won an NIT.

It's pretty comparable, IMO.

If Medved didn't win the Mtn West this year it would have been dead even for NCAAs appearances. Plus he wouldn't have had any beyond the Round of 64. But he did, so all credit for a great streak.

Pitino''s Year 7 there wasn't even an NCAA Tournament to miss anyway. Same goes Medved's 2nd in which they finished 5th in the Mtn West. No idea what the Rams At Large prospects were or if they needed to win the Conf Tournament before the world shut down.

Year 8 for Pitino, mostly played without any spectators. Medved won't even have a chance to regress as Pitino did after 2019 got to the Round of 32, because he's already at another gig.

None of the mn aau club players wanted to play for Pitino. Some how the well got poisoned and Coyle really had no choice to fire Richard.

Actually, I completely disagree with your take. If Medved comes to MN and duplicates the same level of success that he had at CSU, then his success will have far exceeded what Pitino did in his 8 yrs at MN. Looking at these numbers I think bares that out:

1743040841948.png

In his time at MN, Pitino had more than 20 wins in 3 out of 8 seasons and never back to back. On top of that in those 8 seasons he had a winning conf record just once in those 8 yrs. as a result of those poor conf marks, he only finished in the top 5 in the conf ONCE in those 8 yrs.

While when you look at Niko's record at CSU, he had five 20 wins seasons out of his 7 yrs there, while putting three of those 20 win seasons back to back. Then looking at the conference record that's even more of a separator, where he had a winning record in 5 of those 7 seasons. As a result, he finished top 5 in the final conf standing 4 of his 7 yrs with 3 of those years being in the top three.

I know you like to look at the NCAA apperances, but that's not a fair assessment either, as the Mtn West always receives a much tougher draw when they are seeded and usually draw one of the top teams in the country in the first 2 rounds. Whereas, middle of the pack B1G teams usually have much more reasonable seeds in the 7, 8, ot 9 range. If MN would have drawn the same opponents I don't they'd do any better.

So, if you looking at Niko's record at CSU and say if he can duplicate that same level of success at MN will he be highly successful then the answer has to be without a doubt, YES. If he has those types of Conf records in the B1G then you are talking there would be seasons where we are talking 3, 4, or 5 seeds in the tournament. If that happens, interest in Gopher basketball blows up.

Pitino inherited some good players and did recruit some impressive players himself. After 8 years Coyle decided to pull the plug. Why he did it after 8 years with Pitino having gained a plethora of experience and turned around and basically started over made no sense. On top of that, if Pitino was so horrible why go to Pitino's coaching tree and hire CBJ, again with no head coaching experience at any level. In 2020 Coyle had a chance to hire Medved or Smith and many other coaches that had experience were available too, e.g Dutcher and Musselman. Before anointing Medved to the gopher coaching hall of fame let's see the gophers beat WI. Gophers' losing streak with the Badger is up to 9.

I'm hoping that Medved has enough success so that the entire discussion does not become a moot point.

It is head scratching. I recently learned Norwood told Musselman and Flip Saunders no before hiring Pitino. If true, the Johnson hire is roughly equivalent.

Can't believe the athletic department hired 2 guys with no experience with 2 different athletic directors. It would be similar to hiring a salesperson with no experience in sales or the product and wonder why they weren't successful, then fire him and hire another guy with no experience in sales. Then hire a 3rd person that was available when you fired the first guy and getting patted on the back for a great hire. All the while your company's failing due to poor sales.

Throw in TE coach Brewster in 2007 and it was 3 different athletic directors.

Throw in Whalen and it was FB, MBB and WBB in the last 18 years. Doubt there's a power 5 that can match that.
