Hey fella's.
I'm a born and raised Goph fan from Long Beach, Ca (dad is from MN).
i just wanted to know what everyone thought of the Monson era in Minnesota?
I was in high school so and I was always busy with my own sports so i don't recall that era very well.
I know him more as the long time Long Beach State coach as i'm a fan and its my wife's Alma Mater. He had some success but underachieved in my opinion at LB.

Nice guy. Hottest up and comer in the nation when we hired him from Gonzaga. Really hard situation here after academic scandal and crippling restrictions. Others can weigh in but I think the consensus was that he was in over his head in the B1G. Big West was a much better fit. He had some success there but I thought he would do a better.

Monson's only chance at success in Long Beach requires him to buy and operate Joe Jost's tavern!

But in reality, there is no reason for LB to not win the Big West basically every season and get an auto bid in tournament. And he only won it twice in like a billion years

Space Invaders was an arcade game, not an invitation to a group therapy session.
<Oh, my bad!> We have a guest! Welcome <eyes wife knowingly>

Well, Monson was known to run the paddles well in his day. He never achieved high score, and the game was constantly on reset mode at a base functional skill level. A few gamers stopped by. Not many. Other than that, we have upgraded now.

Monson had his hands tied with a reduction in scholarships and recruiting visits. Those penalties hamstrung him and the program, and caused a malaise that continues today. Tubby had a couple of breakthrough seasons, and some recruiting success, but otherwise there has been very little to cheeer about. No wonder so many local kids go elsewhere. They’ve never seen sustained success from this program to make them want to stay.

Never want to overemphasis any given win or loss in a coach’s tenure but Coach Monson had a chance to stay on schedule making the NCAA tournament in his third year. A victory at the Barn in the season finale against Illinois wouid have likely sealed the deal but instead a nine point lead with three minutes to play evaporated with mistakes against the Illini press. The team had a strong all Minnesota front court two years running with Rickert; Holman & Bauer. Just couldn’t quite get the NCAA job done. His one team that made the tournament (2004-2005) was a bunch of overachievers surrounding an outstanding junior college transfer, Vincent Grier. It was a solid coaching job but by that time he was in his sixth year. (After a disastrous 2003-2004 Monson brought in the former Northern
Illinois coach Molinari which helped temporarily stabilize the program.)

Just getting to this thread and this reply says much of what I had in mind. We almost made it the tournament in that third season, and I always thought that if he had, the momentum would've continued. Win that game against Illinois, and I think it changes everything about the rest of his tenure. The way we lost that one really brought things to a halt. People remember that like the 2003 Michigan football game.

I feel like he always had a good offense, but we were never tough enough defensively. Also, it seemed to me he tried to recruit a lot of guys from the west. I'm guessing that's where he had connections, but back then it was hard to get those guys here.

Ouch. Too soon... (both games).

About that horrific Illinois meltdown. I think Kevin Burleson got most of the blame against that press, deserved or not. If he is recalled at all over 20+ years, that day may be what most of us remember.

When Monson was hired, we thought he was the guy who was responsible for the sudden rise of the Gonzaga program. Maybe the Gophers should have looked into the role of that Mark Few played.

Monson also got a Technical for having too many men on the court.
