Gopher Wrestling 2024-2025

it was a better afternoon day 1 with the gophers right between Iowa and OSU on the team score. Wells and Roberts at risk of not making the NCAAs with their finishes. Last year at the NCAAs Wells scored 2.5 points and Roberts 0 points.

day 2 under way

What time should the gophers finals be? Saw the lighter weight finals have been happening

sorry, i was out and about last night and couldn't answer the time question. i think the 285 matches came on at about 7:30 EST. Illinois performed much better than their seeds, OSU and Iowa not so much. Had McEnelly won the 184 match in OT i think the gophers would have finished just above iowa

  • Penn State – 181.5 (Champion)
  • Nebraska – 137.0.
  • Iowa – 112.0.
  • Minnesota – 108.5.
  • Illinois – 105.5.
  • Ohio State – 95.5.

I hope McEnelly stays. Kid is a stud and that match he had Starocci was terrific. Hope he can get revenge at NCAA's.

looks like no drew roberts, so no minnesotan at 149. all the others are in at the NCAAs

edit: looking at the seeds, i think the gophers eke out second with 80 points, just in front of NEB and OKST with Iowa following. PSU runs away with it again

well, first round is done and there goes my hopes for a high gopher finish as 10th seed salazar gets pinned by the 23rd seed. geez

At this point im hoping McEnelly can make it to championship along with Gable. Let's get two into the finals.

Salazar was a big disappointment

* VomBaur, McEnelly and Stevenson advance while Askey loses in OT

* PSU won all 20 of their matches today including 13 bonus points matches

That Askey-Blaze match was great to watch, especially in OT. Really good defending from both sides and both Akey and Blaze looked like they almost had enough to get the takedown and the win in OT

Still have 8 wrestlers competing as we enter session 3
125: Flynn in consolation as 19-seed. Going against 13-seed from Princeton
133: Wells in consolation as 22-seed. Going against 5-seed from N COlorado
141: VomBaur in quarters as 6-seed. Going against 3-seed Mendez (they went to OT in duals)
157: Askey in consolation as 9-seed. Going against 10-seed Miller from Maryland
165: Sparks in consolation as 10-seed. Going against 25-seed from Virginia
174: Whiting in consolation as 28-seed. Going against 6-seed.
184: McEnelly in quarters as 3-seed. Going against 6-seed from Cornell
Hwt: Gable in quarters as 1-seed. Going against 9-seed from Arizona State

If VomBaur can get an upset and we manage to go 3-0 in quarters that'd be huge. Whiting is playing with house money after his comeback last night. He and Wells are likely done for in wrestlebacks. Flynn & Askey have a chance but they will be tough matches. Sparks should be heavily favored.

Update on Session 3 as of 12:30pm.
Flynn and Wells with some really nice upsets in the wrestlebacks to stay alive. They still have to wrestle again in Session 3. VomBaur got destroyed by Mendez. That was very disappointing. He'll wrestle again tonight in the blood round.

Session 3 in the books for the Gophers.
125: Flynn eliminated (went 2-2)
133: Wells eliminated (went 2-2)
141: VomBaur still alive in wrestlebacks (2-1)
157: Askey still alive in wrestlebacks (3-1)
165: Sparks eliminated (1-2)
174: Whiting eliminated (1-2)
184: McEnelly advanced to semi-finals (3-0)
197: Salazar eliminated yesterday (0-2)
Hwt: Steveson advanced to semi-finals (3-0)

2 all-americans guaranteed. 2 still alive....gotta get past the blood round tonight.

Penn State joins 2001 Gophers as only teams in NCAA history with 10 All-Americans. Was a good run. Ahh to be relevant again.

Nebraska putting on a heck of a run here. Only trails PSU by 3 midway through the evening session

Max barely missed winning in OT. What a match. Six more months on the weights, and he would have won that match.

He should hold his head high. That was a hell of a match.

Really feel like that’s a take down. Both knees and both hands down on the mat facing away from your opponent. I get reaction time, but man that just seems like 3. Not sure why you don’t challenge that. I can’t believe Gable will need a challenge in his matches.

Real time I was sure he had won it. Thanks for posting. No idea why we didn't challenge unless we had burned them all.

Same. I slammed my hand on the couch and yelled in celebration of victory the second he seemed to take him down.

I don't know what Eggum was doing. He should've challenged. That photo looks pretty clear to me, but it happened really fast.

McEnelly with a great finish to take 3rd. He couldn't break loose the entire 2nd to trail by 2. Then got called for stalling in 3rd to be down 3. He got a takedown with around 30-40 seconds left but instead of trying to ride out and take the tie, he let him go and scored another takedown for a regulation victory. Phenomenal. Great season for the freshman.

You know what usually happens to underclassmen with great numbers on an underachieving team.

Might happen but he was pretty complimentary of the coaches after his last match. I hope he stays. He can be a legend here

Unreal loss. Gable should have got a stall point but oh well. Welcome to Minnesota sports, indeed

Honestly I’m glad it’s over. Was fun watching, but just felt something wrong with how it all went down.
