All Things Gophers Coaching Search Thread (rumors, tweets, tid-bits and more)

Some here aren't that excited by Medved but I think he'd be a solid hire. Not a huge flashy name but similar to Dawn P a coach that has built programs at various levels. If he is given the proper level of support I think he'd do well here.
Has done a pretty good job at Colorado State, 2 trips to the NCAA tournament and they are on the bubble for this year. Has a couple MN freshman on the roster who might want to come home. :)

Medved would make a lot of sense if he ended up being the guy.

But regardless of who they hire they have to give him the resources he needs to compete. Coyle absolutely needs this hire to work out.

if Niko is the guy, Thorson probably is back. Which I think is a good thing

Tim Miles would love to be back in the Big Ten also- I was bummed when he took the Nebraska job a year before Tubby was fired. Good guy, great quote, got hosed in Nebraska

Does the guy at Drake jump after one year? or does he wait for Fran to retire?

I like what I have read about the Arkansas State coach, but that is a quick jump after one year also- and maybe not enough of a track record after our last two coaches without enough track record have shown.

Per Greder:

Sean Sweeney

He would've been great 4 years ago. Would have made a ton of sense then and by now we'd know exactly what we had. Maybe we would still be moving on, but our floor would have been a lot higher in the mean time.

Ross Hodge

North Texas

He's done a good job there but he has a short track record as a head coach (2 years). Also, North Texas was one of the few schools in the nation that actually played at a slower pace than us. Remember that our game was 54-51.

Sometimes you have to be different to compete in these large conferences. Unless we recruit at a high level to compete, we may need to be different. Not saying it’s the way to go but something to think about out.

McCollum or Wade would be good.

sigh. The road to mediocrity. Not saying he CAN'T do it, I just don't think this is the shot in the arm we need.
If they do this, they need to be innovative with surrounding him with support. GM, additional staff, increased NIL, new arena. Anything to support the hire.

Fair enough but, after this era, it would be nice to assemble a group of players who could compete more on the level of the rest of the conference instead of playing a slow-down game because they're afraid of getting blown out in a faster paced game. Traditionally the Big Ten has been a slow-down, half-court league but it was less so this season. 11 of the 18 teams were in the top half nationally for pace.

Please no Craig Smith
Tauer would be interesting, but I'm not sure he does it, we pick him
Ben McCollum is my top pick, just a gut feeling.
Niko should be our 3rd or 4th option, someone we can fall back on.
Sean Sweeney, not sure, high risk high reward
Will Wade, yes, but I'm sure he has 4 or 5 better options, probably stay in the south

I actually disagree with this. 4 years ago Niko hadn't made an NCAA tourney with CSU. He coached there 3 years and went from 12-20 to 20-8 with a NIT appearance. I felt he was unqualified at the time. Since then he has made the tourney 2 out of 3 years and possible again this year.

If we're going with a slow plodding offense, write a check big enough to get Tony Bennett out of retirement.

That is a good point. Over past 4 years he has gone 87-44 overall and 46-28 in conference with 2 NCAA tournament appearances and potentially a 3rd this season. I think we definitely need to explore options but Medved could end up being a really good fit.

It's a safe, fall back bet, but I think we need to look beyond this if possible. Gotta shoot for the stars and can't mess this up.

He had CSU in the tourney the season we hired Ben

Not sure if this is what you are saying but CSU made the tournament for the first time under Medved during what was Ben's first season as the head coach here. So when we were hiring he was coming off an appearance in the NIT but had not yet qualified for the NCAA tournament.

Per CBS:

With the job open, there is an obvious candidate Minnesota is expected to interview in its search: Colorado State's Niko Medved is a Minneapolis native and has led the Rams to the NCAA Tournament two times in the previous six seasons. CSU, 22-9 and the 2-seed in the Mountain West Tournament, plays Nevada on Thursday.
