Go Gophers!!
Awesome news and was always glad he came back where he belonged!
Go Gophers!!
From what I have heard for weeks he was one of two finalists with Burk.Time will tell… Ben Burk from Lakeville South took the job was Announced as the CDH coach and about a week later decided to go back to LVS… Royston was not their first or second choice… he is the assistant principal there and the job fell into his lap.. hopefully it works out for him.. not sure how much HC experience he has…
Great call, execution and play by Kim.
That's what hiring good assistant coaches is for. Only way to get experience is to try.Time will tell… Ben Burk from Lakeville South took the job was Announced as the CDH coach and about a week later decided to go back to LVS… Royston was not their first or second choice… he is the assistant principal there and the job fell into his lap.. hopefully it works out for him.. not sure how much HC experience he has…
This is more or less true, however, Bollinger was the HC at Hill Murray and then left to be the QB coach at Pitt prior to coaching at CDH.From what I have heard for weeks he was one of two finalists with Burk.
He has zero HC experience and he has very little coaching experience generally. Will be interesting.
Cretin has hired for their last 3 hires:
Brooks Bollinger
Steve Walsh
Kin Royston
It’s almost like they make their hires based on who gets them the most media play vs who has proven they’re a good HS football coach.
It has led to their program really falling off since Scanlan retired. Maybe Royston will be better. Walsh did get them to state but out of a dog crap section
I kind of want to hear about the stuff that would derail this thread…This is more or less true, however, Bollinger was the HC at Hill Murray and then left to be the QB coach at Pitt prior to coaching at CDH.
There are a lot of reasons why CDH has fallen off. A lot of it has to do with increased competition for athletes and some other discussions that would likely derail this entire thread.
All of that said, Kim Royston makes a lot of sense to me. I wish him luck!
As he is out of the Kill tree, he'll make men out of these guys.Time will tell… Ben Burk from Lakeville South took the job was Announced as the CDH coach and about a week later decided to go back to LVS… Royston was not their first or second choice… he is the assistant principal there and the job fell into his lap.. hopefully it works out for him.. not sure how much HC experience he has…
Could be good. No reason to have any idea either way as the guy has coached like 1 season of high school footballThis is more or less true, however, Bollinger was the HC at Hill Murray and then left to be the QB coach at Pitt prior to coaching at CDH.

I have no idea how true any of it is, I don’t live in the area, but there are certainly members of CDH community that believe the school has shifted away from its core beliefs and that shift has resulted in losing a number of kids/coaches to other schools. I’m sure there is a part of this that is a cope for simply not being that good anymore at sports.I kind of want to hear about the stuff that would derail this thread…

I am so intrigued by this decision. Does anyone know why he decided not to go to CDH? Who was interested in the Lakeville South position?Time will tell… Ben Burk from Lakeville South took the job was Announced as the CDH coach and about a week later decided to go back to LVS… Royston was not their first or second choice… he is the assistant principal there and the job fell into his lap.. hopefully it works out for him.. not sure how much HC experience he has…
The two most logical reasons are:I am so intrigued by this decision. Does anyone know why he decided not to go to CDH? Who was interested in the Lakeville South position?
My limited sources in Lakeville say that he has been looking at moving into administration for a while and CDH was the best position to do both - admin and head football coach.
From what I understand, Cretin tries to make the school affordable. Not sure this impacts a coaches salary. The two most logical reasons are:
1) buyers remorse - he simply changed his mind once it went public and was able to walk it back
Or
2) the money that was discussed didn’t match the money that was on paper. I think a lot of times people assume the Catholic schools pay much better than they actually do
As far as who was interested in the south position, the position came and went too soon for the rumor mill to really get started. I heard a couple of names but not really sure I believe them.
Yeah, the majority of the students are still Mpls/Saint Paul. But it's not like it was (from my understanding). The local Catholic grade schools were a feeder system and then Cretin would pull from the local youth programs. There is also the fact that Saint Paul has just changed a bit - like most cities. There are fewer true middle class households - the neighborhoods are more polarized in terms of wealth/backgrounds/etc., so the core of Cretin has also changed - moved out to the burbs.Question for the board. Does Cretin still pull athletes many/ any from Minneapolis and St. Paul? It's been a while since I've followed Minneapolis and St. Paul city conferences. At one time Cretin, Hill-Murray, and St. Thomas used to be able to cherry pick players.
Not sure those areas produce many top players anymore. BTW I am mostly thinking football.
A lot of kids now open enroll to Eagan instead of paying to go to CDHI have no idea how true any of it is, I don’t live in the area, but there are certainly members of CDH community that believe the school has shifted away from its core beliefs and that shift has resulted in losing a number of kids/coaches to other schools. Yes. St. Marks, Nativity, St. Columba, St. Peter Claver, and others I missed. I didn't name St. Agnes, nor St. Bernards (No longer has a school?) because they were/ are k-12 schools. I am sure there are others in St. Paul that I missed. I assume De LaSalle gets many of the Minneapolis athletes?Yeah, the majority of the students are still Mpls/Saint Paul. I think this is the biggest difference.Yeah, the majority of the students are still Mpls/Saint Paul. But it's not like it was (from my understanding). I don't know how true this is, but I think DeLaSalle is somewhat similar to Cretin now. DeLaSalle used to pull a lot of the Catholic kids out of the traditionally Polish neighborhoods in North / NE / St. Anthony. But by the late 80s / mid-90s, the demographics had changed and those families went out to the burbs. So then DeLaSalle was less connected to a deeply Catholic base - it was more of a private school that happened to be Catholic. I think the exact same thing has now happened to Cretin (just 10-15 years later).Yes. St. Marks, Nativity, St. Columba, St. Peter Claver, and others I missed. Basically every Catholic high school inside 494 is worse at football than they were in 2012Yes. St. Marks, Nativity, St. Columba, St. Peter Claver, and others I missed. Things have definitely changed. There was a time when both Cretin and St. Thomas Academy could line up over 100 players. Yes some of them were underclassmen who would only see the field in a extreme emergency (injuries), but it was still impressive to see them line up. Especially homecoming. Sometimes they'd do a 21gun salute.I think this is the biggest difference.
And the people from the burbs like new shiny STA more
Just hard to do football because it is such a numbers game
Still really good at other sports though
TG just north of 694 fits that too.Basically every Catholic high school inside 494 is worse at football than they were in 2012
Except STA, and STA is literally on 494
I never thought of that but you are spot on.Basically every Catholic high school inside 494 is worse at football than they were in 2012
