Country singer Toby Keith dies at 62

Sad to see this. His cancer diagnosis seemed pretty bad over the last two years, so hopefully he’s at peace now.

I saw him in concert in the late 90’s, a very good show. “Should Have Been a Cowboy” is a top 5 country song for me.

I'm not much for country music, but Toby had some really fun songs. It may be controversial to some, but Courtesy of the Red White and Blue is one of my all time favorites.

RIP Toby, sad to see him go so quickly.

the radio station I worked at before retiring played Country music - newer country on FM and classic country on AM - so I heard all of Keith's music from the start.

to be honest, I'm not a big country fan. but I will say I enjoyed his earlier songs more than his later material. I thought the earlier material was more about telling a story. the later material - to me - seemed to be more about making a point. and I admit I didn't agree with his politics, which probably colors my opinion of the material.

Agree 100% on the older stuff is better. I really like his older stuff too. His newer songs are good too, I just really prefer his older songs. Overall he's got a really nice catalog of songs. Just checked out his album "35 biggest hits", and there's a lot of great stuff on there.

Similar to Gophers1992, Courtesy of the Red White and Blue" is a guilty pleasure of mine. I really enjoy it.

Gotta admit, this one hits me a little bit. Probably because of the loss of my youth more than anything. I am absolutely not one to go to concerts. I've literally been to two in my life. Just so happens that the first one was what my fiancee (now my wife) took me to see at the State Fair in 2001....Toby Keith and Leann Womack. Fun show.

I agree wholeheartedly with those that preferred his earlier work. His stuff from the 90's until about 2002 with "My List" was good storytelling. "Who's That Man?" is probably my favorite and as I get older and look back on regrets and paths not taken it hits me everytime. But I also love "Should have been a Cowboy", "My List" and a whole slew of others I'm probably forgetting at the moment.

His post-9/11 went to patriotism, whiskey and fun party songs.....and while I still enjoyed most of them, it was obviously more designed for commercialism to appeal to a mass audience.

RIP Toby. For better or worse, you were the face of country music for a solid decade.
 

His song Crying For Me which he wrote for his late friend Wayman Tisdale is one of the saddest songs I’ve heard. In regards to his politics he described himself as a conservative Democrat. Regardless my impression was he was a good man.
