More people in the US watched last year's Minnesota-Syracuse Pinstripe Bowl than the clinching game of the Stanley Cup

Not surprised. Huge mismatch between two uncompelling teams.

I recall a lot of complaining about a crappy bowl slot location, crappy field conditions (true), crappy matchup opponent and yet somehow it keeps showcasing us.
The players enjoyed the swag, the location and the win. We are all happy with the bowl win!
And now people are still talking about us in June. Go Gophers!
Here is to another 10 win season or better! :drink:

College football is like 1,000 x more popular in the United States than hockey.
I'd be willing to bet a meaningless bowl game by two second tier teams would struggle to get 1M viewers if they played it today. I don't care how much more popular CFB is than the NHL!

Yeah, I've lived in Minnesota my entire life, I'm in my mid 40's, and I can honestly say I've never watched an entire hockey game before. I've tried, and I've seen it on in the background at bars and stuff, but that game is boring as watching paint dry. You could offer me $1000 to watch a single game and I'd still refuse. It's just that boring to me.

On the other hand, I'm trying to get into these USFL games I see on TV on the weekends now. I don't recognize any players or anything, but I'll watch football just to watch football, regardless of the teams.

Lie detector test determined, that was a lie.

No, it wasn't. But how convenient of you to think you can read my mind.

I buy that it wasn't a lie.

Different sport, but I would need to be paid to watch a full MLS match. My price might not be $1000 for soccer, but for sure well into triple digits, so a grand doesn't seem outrageous.

To each their own.

My price would be similar for a USFL game.

Hockey is an electric live sport. Arguably, the best spectator sport live.

But football is just perfectly designed for television, and for how we watch television.

Hockey could become a much better television sport someday if what we think of as “television” becomes much more immersive in the future.

I would watch any 2 hour sporting event for 500 bucks an hour.
Anyone who says they wouldn’t is lying (or loaded)

I'll agree. I went on a date to a hockey game and had a great time - although we still left early. I was having fun but the girl I was with was mad because the Wild were getting beat like 6-1 and so we left. But what I experienced was nothing like the boredom of watching it on tv.

Similarly, I have zero interest in ever attending a football game live, but I'll watch all day long on TV.

I don't consider myself loaded, but I am single and have been doing software for a while now. A grand doesn't move the needle for me, at least not enough to suffer through a hockey game on tv. If I saw a grand on the ground, would I pick it up? Absolutely. I pick up spare change I see on the ground.

I just find hockey on tv to be THAAAAAAAAAAAAT boring.

You need to have a few kids and you’ll watch a hockey game for a grand

Not the "k" word! I'd probably watch it at a bar just to get out of the house!!! All my friends' social lives (except one) went to sh*t after having kids. (Only 1 friend of mine continued to act single and have fun.)

On top of atmosphere, football live has one advantage that you get to see the entire field.

I don't much like how football is shown on TV, it's so ball focused you see a guy run and just see him get more yards and the excitement builds from there... that's fun, but live you see the WR is open, you sometimes see that the blitz is going to work before it happens, that the RB made a good cut and there's room in front of him.

It's a different experience and additionally I like seeing how the coverage looks, how well the lines are pushing and etc. That's nigh impossible to see on TV outside extreme cases.

Good reply. I hope it doesn't seem like I'm trying to be argumentative here. This actually seems like civil discussion between differing points of view in this thread.

I can see your point, but in my case that's a reason why I don't like it live. I want to hear the announcer telling me what's going on, etc. If I see all 22 players, like you are, I get overwhelmed and can't really focus on anything. I like the play-by-play guy showing a reply and who missed the block, or who blew the assignment on defense, etc. I can focus and understand then. But for some reason I can't do it live if it's that many moving parts.

I am the same. The only rules I claim to know are high-sticking and icing...sometimes.
When I did play hockey I always wore my snowmobile boots.
I did watch a little of the Gopher men's run in the championships this year...but that's because its the Gophers.
USFL keeps my interest...until the wife comes to bed and suggests some new streaming show that the hens on Talk 107 were raving about.

I watch NCAA women's ice hockey because there is far more skating, passing, and play-making than the NFL or even NCAA men's ice hockey.
The Final Four games were very exciting.

No you watched it because Wisconsin's men's ice hockey program is in the shitter and their women are actually good.
