Yup, Any analysis that claims Cal and Vandy are among the leaders should not only be questioned, it should be mocked. Before people get too caught this is probably just a click bait data grab by AI.
The accounting standards make what was reported to the Department of Ed unreliable for these types of comparisons (accross specific sports) unless they’re specifically carved out of the FInancials statements.
If I recall correctly, The U does some kind of goofy expense allocations that will reduce the reported profitability of athletics in general.
I have also seen revenue lists like this that we were on the last 5 years or so. Some of it is a game because the school can allocate the TV revenue however they want between sports etc. But certainly the drop in attendance has hurt.We probably were at some point. Just looking at some random years: 13th in attendance Nationally in '94, 18th in '95, 23rd in '03, 33rd in '12, back up to 23 in '13, surprsingly still 29th in '18. Oustside the top 30 in 2020 (only shows top 30 and Gophers attendance was about 1,400 less per game than the number 30 schools, same with 2022 when Gopher attendance was about 1,000 less per game than the number 30 schools. Not sure I buy that we had 10,267 per game in '22 but that is what the NCAA claims: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketball_RB/2023/Attend.pdf
I know this past season (which I assume is considered '23 and not listed yet) was really bad not only in attendance but also in like suite sales. The fact that people have come out and supported this program over especially the last decade when it's been a dumpster is quite impressive. It seems like the line was drawn when a match was taken to it and it became a flaming dumpster fire.
*This is just men's attendance, I would assume we are also hurt by not being competitive on the women's side.
Minnesota still managed to crack 10,000. A lot of folks dressed up as empty seats though. We probably were at some point. Almost certainly, yes. Even so, I'll be shocked if 2022-2023 stayed above 10,000.I assume paid attendance and not scanned tickets...
