Pacific led UC San Diego, 8-6, entering the bottom of the eighth inning on Saturday. Three (very long) outs later, San Diego led 16-8 en route to a 16-9 victory, Jeff writes.

What happened: 13 batters came to the plate in the eighth, and all 10 who reached base scored despite San Diego's only hit being a bunt single. The 13 plate appearances:

• Hit by pitch
• Walk (followed by a pitching change)
• Bunt, batter reaches on throwing error, run scores
• Bunt, batter reaches on throwing error, run scores
• Bunt single, run scores
• Hit by pitch
• Walk, run scores
• Sacrifice bunt, run scores (first out of the inning)
• Fielder's choice, two runs score on throwing errors (followed by a pitching change)
• Walk, preceded by a passed ball
• Walk, preceded by a stolen base, passed ball and run-scoring wild pitch
• RBI groundout, preceded by two wild pitches, one of which scored a run (second out)
• Strikeout (inning over)

When mentioning "collapse" and "inning" I think the Twins/Ron Davis coughing up a 6-1 to the Angels back in April of 1986 was worse.

I was there. The Teflon roof was literally collapsing, and then so did the Twinkies. I remember the light standards in the OF being pointed at directly at the turf.

Is anything worse than the 1973 college World Series??? I believe it was 7-0 Gophers leading heading into the 9th with Winfield on the mound and cruising. Unbelievable.

From a local angle, that was certainly epic. USC had both Fred Lynn and Roy Smalley.
