Why not Gray at QB vs Northwestern?

I finally watched the NIU game last night. It is the beauty of being a out of town Gopher fan that you can go to the cottage on the week-end guilt free. Of course it was kind of pathetic as I listened to WCCO in my car in a dark lot at the lake.

What I saw was Weber missing a lot of throws. The receivers caught a bunch but better throws would have led to more points. Case in point the 4th and 3 to Allen. He scores if that pass is anywhere close. Instead he makes a nice catch but can't advance the ball.

Why not give Weber a breather and let Gray play? Northwestern is not too athletic (stereotype I know) and they may have problems with Gray. Weber would benefit from watching and might drop the tension a bit. If Gray succeeds then keep him there, if not back to WR.

I am still somewhat behind Brewster (there I said it, there goes my credibility) but Gophers QB management for the past 4 years has been insane. No QB but Weber has had meaningful snaps since Weber started as a freshman. If he gets hurt, we go to a complete newcomer.

PS Weber beat out seniors Tony Mortenson and Mike Macejewski (sp) as a freshman so he couldn't be too personally hurt by this.

I'd love to see Gray at QB the rest of the Season but it won't happen because Brewster is too loyal to his son...

thailleagle,

I thought Weber was the offensive starter who was going to transfer by yesterday? No?

I would like to see Gray or Alipate (sp) get some game experience, but what reason would the current coaching staff have to do so if this is their last season?

I think they could save their jobs if there was overwhelming evidence that the level of play next year and beyond will be much better. The most influential position in football is QB and it's time for Brewster to show us what the future could bring.

Interesting.

It appears to me the Gophers have a total of 2 wr's who can get open from time to time. Gray is one of them so who in the world is going to take his place? Putting Gray at QB in this system is like putting Brett Favre in an option system at 40 years of age. It would waste his talent. Gray is right where he should be as a go to WR. Gray was brought to this program to be a game changer in the spread mostly because of his athletic ability and his ability to run. He has a cannon for an arm and can throw it a long way but there is a reason he is not starting at QB. If he wants any chance to make the NFL which I am sure he does it is going to be as a 6'4" 225 pound WR with good hands and a ton of potential to get better with more coaching. It is not as a running QB in a Pro Styled offense that doesnt allow him to do what he is good at.

The evidence to save their jobs will come from the defensive side of the ball. If there is strong improvement on that side of the ball the team will be playing for this year, not next.

Just because the defense is the weakest link doesn't mean shoring it up will lead to victories. We have little to no running game which means we are dependent on Weber to be accurate to control the ball for long stretches of time, why not stick a dual threat QB in there who can help to control the ball with both his feet and his arm?

Gray

I'd keep Gray at Wide Reciever. Dave Mona said this guy will be an All-American. Maybe Dave has a tendency to exaggerate but Gray is looking very good at WR. I'd keep him there and start Moses right now at QB.

Well, safe to say with any defense at all the Gophers would be 3-1 right now and we wouldn't even be having QB discussions.

Not unless we are going to the triple option and running 50 times a game. Who would he throw it to?

After careful examination of this post we have decided that based on your passion, your persistence, and most of all, your impeccably sound logic.... You, monk10, hereby qualify to lead the Tea Party. ;)

Look, you haven't been paying attention. We are a pound the rock team, period. Why on earth would we want a talented, athletic and dynamic playmaker take snaps when our system runs an undersized h back between the tackles for an avg of 2.2 yards per carry? Geez-some people.

It's not the receivers fault...

Against good man to man defense, almost every receiver has a short window of opportunity to catch a ball on every route. It is on the break. The challenge, of course, is for the QB to be able to understand when that occurs and have the ball out of his hand before the break. Weber rarely seems able to understand and predict the defense which opens up these opportunities. He needs to see a receiver running open for a second or two before he can throw it. It is for this reason that most of Webers successful passing occurs against a zone defense. I don't know if Gray has the ability to do this any better, but there are plenty of opportunities to throw to open receivers, even this group.

Weber to Gray is the only thing this team has going right now.
