Here's where we're at after 2 seasons. There's a decent chance we'll have to remove Micah Shrewsberry from this comparison in the near future. ... Notre Dame? Providence? Will Penn State pony up to keep him?

See you at this same bat time and same bat channel in November.

Updated through 2022-23 Season
These soon to be 3rd-year coaches are listed in order of overall winning percentage since taking over their programs prior to the 2021-22 season.

1 TJ Otzelberger (Iowa State) -- 41-27 overall (60.3%), 27-27 vs. Power 6 (50%), NCAA Tournament Appearances/Record (2/2-2)

2 Micah Shrewsberry (Penn State) -- 37-31 overall (54.4%), 25-30 vs. Power 6 (45.5%), NCAA Tournament Appearances/Record (1/1-1)

3 Craig Smith (Utah) -- 28-35 overall (44.4%), 16-32 vs. Power 6 (33.3%)

4 Ben Johnson (Minnesota) -- 22-39 overall (36.1%), 9-38 vs. Power 6 (19.1%)

I think Craig smith would’ve been better than Johnson here….but I don’t get how you can look at something like this and be like…slam dunk

A guy I’ve never heard of who is having success at the mid major level is as likely to be successful
As Craig smith

As someone who really wanted Smith, I agree with you to an extent. On paper, he doesn't recruit high schoolers well. He's done well in the past with international recruits and players through the portal, even before the free transfer.

They will likely return most of the core of their roster for next season, so they could be a tournament team next year. But he still does have a lot to prove at the P6 level.

Per my CBS Sports App, Shrewsberry has reached an agreement to return to South Bend.

In the past there have been lots of worries from Gopher fans "if a coach leaves early after short term success". Feels like a better problem for Penn St to deal with than what Minnesota has going on.

We'll see. On paper, PSU is losing just about everybody who matters to eligibility - on paper, MN is in a better spot right now with being pretty set for bigs, at least. Can PSU bring in someone who can hit the jackpot on the portal? I kind of doubt it.

I would rather have enjoyed what Penn St has accomplished in the past 2 years (even if the biggest highlights were in the last fortnight) than Minnesota being on "better on paper" which is debatable and can change daily.

Penn St does have a new AD though, so it does remain to be seen how it will play out going forward.

What a loser mentality. Hey let's just be historically awful, so our coach doesn't get poached to another school. I'd much rather have played for a B1G title, made the tournament and won a game in it. PSU just about made the S16 too.

Don’t misunderstand - I think Johnson is a disaster. But, I understand the rationale for hiring someone who doesn’t view the job as a stepping stone. The goal is and was to build a consistent competitive program. Swing and a miss, but it is a defensible strategy compared to flashing in the pan.

As far as NIL is concerned Penn State could be a sleeping giant, that school has a ton of support, mostly for football but they support the school which could translate to positives in basketball. NIL is changing the landscape of college basketball. Many programs that didn't warrant an after thought may be powerhouses in the future.

It is pretty clear Ben’s 2 years as head coach have been a disaster.

It took a weird turn of events for ND to open up. Nobody, even him probably thought it was going to open. Also, he's from Indiana and spent about 75% of his coaching career in the state of Indiana. I'm sure he's always wanted to be the ND, Purdue or IU coach. No different than a guy like Roy Williams wanting to be at UNC.

Just hire the best guy period. Yeah, Ben is likely to stay because of his ties, but if it's shit, what's the point. There was nothing in his career trajectory that made him qualified for this job.

Ben would leave for more money.

Mods need to change this threads title!

I propose, “The comparable Three and The outlier!” Or “the competent Three and Ben.”
